I skipped reading thru the thread, sorry if'n I'm a bein' redundant here . .. .

It depends on the moral system to which you 'subscribe'.

I'm a buddhist. Buddhists subscribe to ahimsa, the doctrine of avoiding causing harm. Thus, Buddhist doctrines suggest that the more moral path is to avoid causing suffering via killing animals for food.

I lower-case the 'buddhist' in describing myself because I am unorthodox & non-doctrinaire in my practice, & when it comes to meat-eating I'm a naughty, sinful, bad buddhist (no biscuit, lol) . . . . Luckily, Buddhism is a fairly broad & accomodating philosophy & doesn't really do the whole 'hell & shaming' thing that the followers of the book do so much of . . . . .

In fact, I was counseled at one point by a vegetarian, when I was despairing of my ability to thrive on a vegetarian diet, that not everyone is meant to be a vegetarian. Bodies vary & some people do better eating meat than not .. . . Her wisdom & calm acceptance really helped me get past this whole meat-eaters-versus-veg-heads thing . .. . ..

There are evangelicals of all kinds out there. I've found that it's my interior beliefs, attitudes, & expectations that correlate most strongly to whether an evangelical has an effect on me . . . . . .

For instance, Christians have all kinds of beliefs about what is moral that I'm at variance with, but evangelical Christians proselytizing at me have never gotten me wondering if I'm moral or not. I got very clear on how 'not a Christian' I am during my adolescence & I've never looked back. So they can natter on & on at me & at most I'll be bored or amused or something along those lines . . . . .

I think that eating with reverance for all beings that we consume , animal and vegetable, is a healthy attitude. Also, consider with gratitude, all the people and beings who make this meal possible. The number of hands that labor to bring even the simplest meals to us is mind-blowing. Reverance and gratitude for them all is, IMO, the best "grace" to be said.

Hey there stranger. :)  I'll take haggis... provided it's good.  I've had good and bad haggis.  There's really no in-between.

I have made an effort in the past at Haggis meat on the rare occasion. Here it's possible to order up from the butcher, so theres not much point.

The (alleged) Haggis we bought at the Ren Faire (at a ridiculous price EVEN if it was imported) last year was definately not one I'd recommend. It tasted suspiciously like "Halls" (the brand) Haggis ... which is particularly salty and far too soggy.

I've a good recipe if you ever just use a food processor and chuck in the ingredients ... all you then get stuck for is a stomach ... but if you roll it out and wrap it in a thin layer of unsmoked bacon before baking it ... heavenly.

Everything is better wrapped in bacon though, so that's a given.  I like to think I make a decent haggis.  Learned how to make it from Joseph Walker (the guy who runs Walker's Shortbread... god I'm addicted to that stuff), met him a few years back at a restaurant where I was working, and he hung out after hours the next night (friend of my boss) and made haggis.  It was heavenly.  Most people freak out about it because of its reputation.  All it really is, is a meatloaf in a bag.  [:D]

Back on topic...

I was a vegetarian, eating only fish, for about fifteen years.  I added poultry after I moved to Utah because it was impossible to survive there without some kind of meat.

As a diabetic, I cannot eat the starchy grains that constitute most of a vegetarian diet and eat poultry regularly now.

Nice point. I think that underlies many people's objection to factory farming, not just that it is dirty, but that it is of a piece with the massive gluttony that pervades society. Slaughtering a thousand cows just so that ten thousand half eaten Big Macs can be tossed in a landfill seems wrong, somehow. Like it is a callous disrespect for something wonderful.

I eat meat.
I do not see it as immoral or as murder.
I respect the animals that die so that myself and others can eat.

I'm a meat eater but being buddhist I tend to eat kosher or halal meat and I won't eat meat from young animals, such as veal.

I also eat fish and insects.

I'm nearly a total carnivore. This helped me lose over 100 pounds, and it's how we evolved.

Let PETA have the tofu, I'll stick to ribeye.

I am a meat eater but I never waste or take meat for granted and I only eat organic.
I don't eat prawns or quail because too many lives have to die to feed one mouth. A cow or a pig can feed many...one life = many meals and also provide leather.

I don't think we are morally wrong to eat meat but I don't like the hypocrites. Someone who won't eat a dear because its far too pretty is in my opinion just that. Every animals life has = value.

I do think its morally wrong to kill an animal just for its fur and I would happily linch any woman wearing a seal skin coat.

Only if it's homo sapien meat. I myself don't eat meat because I feel uncomfortable doing so. It's a personal preference and not a moral obligation.
