The article talks of other things, but I found this interesting and thought provoking and wondered what you all might think.

I am not surprised at all. Based upon what little I've read, it is not uncommon. Especially in times past. Seems silly to me, but that's just my personal opinion.

One time I was staying at my sister's and walked past her kids room and found the one spanking himself. I was pretty young too and didn't know a lot about these things... but man was I disturbed! lol Why would the child wish to spank himself? Was it an emotional need? Does he feel he is bad? What the hell? lol

I know some do these things for religious reasons... but I think of the many other reasons and wonder... lol

I am a frequent critic of the church, but John Paul II was a truly admirable figure. Not perfect, but all the more admirable because of his flaws.
Much of the respect and love I have for the Church is because of him.

While it seems wildly incongruous or even blasphemous to link kinky spanking with religious self-mortification, they are in fact deeply connected; We often reach our deeper selves during periods of trial and pain and suffering.

The word "compassion" is derived from Latin- "Com" meaning with, and "passio" meaning pain; literally, to "suffer with".

I am trying to remember the details, but I believe it is regularly practiced by several religiouns. I am almost positive I have read about monks that do it en mass on a specific date. In addition, I saw something, perhaps on the travel channel where there were young men walking through the street as part of a religious ceremony, flogging themselves. It was someplace more remote in either China, Tibet, Vietnam.....something.

And then there is the device that some devout used to place around their thigh I believe, that dug in quite painfully.

For some reason I just remembered the old story about the hair shirt.

So, according to the book referred to in the link, because JP Junior had a gorean slave fetish and liked sleeping on the floor, and because he enjoyed self-flagellation, there is a case for his canonization?

And people wonder why the Catholic church gets laughed at for being fucked up [8D] .

The movie The Da Vinci Code... has some scenes with the man flogging himself and with that thing around his thigh. It still sticks in my mind! lol

Here's the worst part: one day, left eye. The next day, the other eye [:(] . I never offered him that particular service again.
