NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A conservative activist who posed as a pimp to target the community-organizing group ACORN and the son of a federal prosecutor were among four men arrested and accused of trying to tamper with phones at Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office.

Activist James O'Keefe, 25, recorded two of the other suspects with his cell phone as they walked into the office dressed like telephone repairman and said they needed to fix problems with the phone system, according to an FBI affidavit.

A federal law enforcement official said one of the suspects was picked up in a car a couple of blocks away with a listening device that could pick up transmissions. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was not part of an FBI affidavit that described the circumstances of the case.

O'Keefe said "veritas," Latin for truth, as he left a suburban jail Tuesday with suspects Stan Dai and Joseph Basel, both 24. All declined to comment.

"There will be a time for that," Dai said.

As he got into a cab outside the jail, O'Keefe said, "The truth shall set me free." His biography on a Web site where he blogs says he works at VeritasVisuals.com, though that Web site does not currently work.

The fourth suspect, Robert Flanagan, the son of Shreveport-based acting U.S. Attorney Bill Flanagan, was not with them. It was not immediately known if he had already been released on the $10,000 bail set for each suspect.

It sounded like a Watergate-style operation, but federal officials have not yet said why the men wanted to interfere with Landrieu's phones, whether they were successful, or even if the goal was political espionage.

I think that this is a mistake for the prosecutors. Now a new light will shine on the cockroaches in the corner. This will be bad for acorn in the long run.

Oh shoot.

Did they catch me on cam again?

tazzygirl -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/26/2010 5:41:10 PM)

acorn is bad to begin with. there is no excuse for what happened there. however, it will be interesting how he will spin his latest attempt.... and i would LOVE to hear the son's excuse to his US Attorney dad.

Funny you should mention that considering the federal prosecutor is a GWB appointee.

NO I do not think so, as much as they (the GOP) tried to tie accorn to Obama, nothing is their.

I mean hell every news agency in this country looked and found nothing more than a criminal on the same board as him, only while he served as counsel.  It's the same old BS that went nowhere before and will go nowhere now.

Move on to something new, but then again the GOP have nothing else, but this, the birther thing and he is Muslim

Nah. Left, right, and nambypamby, we can all pretty much agree on his craptasticular ineffectiveness. He's quite the uniter.

truckinslave -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 8:32:36 PM)

Sorry to update you, tazzy, but they're already walking bacck the more serious charges. They may not even get a true bill out of this. Can you spell "Duke" and "rape"?

tazzygirl -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 8:36:54 PM)

Im sure you can link me up to the back walking, right?

juliaoceania -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 8:41:41 PM)

fast reply...

This will prove how these little punks edited the videos of the ACORN people to paint them in the worst of lights...

Mark my words, people will feel completely different about ACORN when this little wannabe pimp sleeze is completely exposed.

This dude deserves hard time.

tazzygirl -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 8:42:40 PM)

he was busted not by the state police, but by the FBI. if he walks, that will be the crime.

juliaoceania -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 8:48:08 PM)

ACORN was one of the few groups that stood up for those with the least of political voices. Because they were successful in mobilizing the poor to vote and have a collective voice they have been demonized and targeted.

Now we see SCOTUS allowing corporations to have even more of a voice in our political system, and that is legal for crying out loud... things in this country are seriously out of whack

Why, sure; I'd be glad to: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2010/01/27/2187074.aspx

It's my understanding no bugging gear was found.....

The cockroaches were the ones that got arrested, and long overdue.

If I'm not mistaken there is still a civil suit pending against him for his little ACORN "sting".

My understanding is that it is illegal to prevaricate to gain access to a senator's office and impersonate phone company personnel in order to gain access to phone lines...

I know some people on the conservative side of the aisle have a selective understanding of what a breech in national security is, but puhleezeeeee

So this is now a breach of national security? Go puhleeeze yoself.
What I said was they're walking back the more serious charges. Federal wiretapping charges vs. "impersonating phone company personnel"? Yeah, I'll stand by that statement.

Yes it is, that is why the penalties for the laws he broke are so severe... I know you may think because this boy is on "your side" that he isn't a risk, but the law exists for all of us.

truckinslave -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 9:20:59 PM)

He's not even charged yet. We'll have to see what laws, if any, he's charged with breaking before we know what the penalties are. Then we'll have to see what the jury (or plea bargain) finds him guilty of (if anything). My guess is some sort of trespass, some probation......

Of course he was charged.

Do you think people get arrested and held for no reason without charges?

This isn't Guantanamo.

Did you bother to read the link?

truckinslave -> RE: ACORN pimp gets busted! (1/29/2010 9:53:42 PM)

I'm not an attorney, thank God, but I do believe there is a difference between being arrested and actually charged....
As far as I know he has only been arrested.
