I am sure we can get about 20 threads going from tonight's SOTU. I have taken my eyes off of the war in Iraq lately, but I was surprised to hear that President Obama plans to get us out of Iraq by August 2010! WOW! Who thinks this plan will come to fruition, and we will actually pull most of our troops out of Iraq by 2010? Also, will we leave Iraq so we can double and triple the number of troops in Afghanistan?

I wish that were true Mia, but it will not happen. I do not like Obama but he is smart enough not to leave Iraq. We will be there forever. We are not fighting in S. Korea, but we have been there for over 50 years. Bill Clinton said we would leave Bosnia. We are still there. We will always be there. We need to stay in these countries.

It's easy to set a date like that, and then tweak what "troops" and "out" mean. If we simply keep "advisors" there in noncombat capacity...

President Obama just said 1 hour ago, that we would be pulling out most of our troops in August 2010. I would think an attempt will be made to do that. Now, I didn't say if it would be successful or not.

Yet in pursuit of this ONE MAN, we have blundered into pointless wars in 4 nations, and are threatening war with a 5th. With every turn, with every development, we open yet another front, invade yet another country, widen the conflict yet more, and draw this out into a 50 year committment that our grandchildren will still be fighting. All because we coudn't get this one man in 2001.

I think he said "combat troops," Mia. That's a very convenient term, with lots of wiggle room. Did you notice that he never mentioned Guantanamo Bay at all? A well crafted and very well delivered speech. Credit where it is due. Generally, a SOTU has very little impact on approval numbers. President Obama might be an exception with this one.

You cannot field an Army with an enemy in your rear. As long as the United States is in Afganistan, US troops will be in Iraq. Of course, the President could always occupy Iran instead...would ya like that?

Iraq and Afghanistan have bout as much to do with each other as india and japan. We fight in Iraq of course under the guise that it is a front on the international war on terrorism, but in truth we've brought more of the terrorist element in iraq then we've removed(remember, sadam was pretty much secular, only using religion when he needed it, He didn't care for islamic extremists all that much because they posed a threat to his "power"). Of course that is all a mute point now, sadam is dead and Iraq has been Liberated, but it still holds no strategic advantage for us to be metaling there any further(mostly cause of how much we've fucked up, haliburton and friends have totally failed reestablishing any sort of infrastructure needed to pull iraq out of the third world, and our private security forces and interrogation tactics have fed the jihadist with so much PR ammunition that we might as well put up happy little osama bin laden cartoon posters just in hopes that the guilt of association will deter people from associating with him lol), Time to finnish up our work in Afghanistan if you ask me...

The elusive Osama Bin Laden, this man that the US has been chasing for what is it now, coming up for nine years and still no find. This will-o'-the-wisp despite all the allied might, intelligence and numbers, just can't find him, yet he is the reason we are told that men and women are being sent overseas to fight and die on foreign soil. Now and again we are fed the occaisional low quality video rant, OSL apparently reminding us of his prescence, yet he remains free to terrorise whom he pleases. Honestly, the question just has to be asked, is this guy real, or is he a figment of someone's imagination, a face maintained to justify continued conquest of oil bearing countries. Fair enough OBL did exist, but does he still, or is it rather that he has become a modern day myth that causes both sides in this war to continue feeling threatened, and their fight for their own survival. The question just has to be asked, in all this blood shed, just who is profiting from it, as it makes no sense for the West to keep pouring in money and lives to keep coming up with nothing except another clue which oil bearing or influential nation he is now residing in. I heard OSL is CIA trained, well, if he is, he is obviously their best trained, for him to keep foxing his trainers, either that, or he no longer exists War on terror, define terror.

The Status of Forces Agreement under which our combat forces are to be withdrawn from Afghanistan by Aug 2010 was negotiated by, and signed by..... President George W. Bush.

Bush. I assume you are thinking of Iraq because as far as I know no such agreement was made with Afghanistan. And the agreement with Iraq was only made after Obama announced a withdrawal plan and al-Maliki publicly endorsed it, forcing Bush into a position he consistently previously opposed, setting a withdrawal timetable.

Shoulda had a V8: Iraq, of course. I consider Al-Maliki's preference for a date certain to have been much more influential on President Bush than anything Obama said. Bush always maintained we would leave when the Iraqis wanted us to.....

It's interesting that you should say that, because Obama has been criticized for his diplomatic overtures to other nations as making the U.S. appear weak. Yet you are, in effect, saying that Bush let another nation's leaders dictate the use of American forces.

I'm saying that the policy of the U.S. under Bush, for Iraq, was: regime change. That mission having been accomplished, and new government having been duly elected, and the US never having gone there as occupiers, President Bush negotiated a SoFA acceptable to said new government. There is no weakness evident in any of that.
