kyuketsuki1977 -> what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 7:45:38 AM)

I am starting this thread but it is not an easy question for me to answer I dance with insomnia every single night and have done so since I was 18 and the reason I dance with insomnia is because I think. I mean that some times I can not stop thinking turn off that thought process.

So I am curious do you have one last defining thought or is it a jumbled mess like mine?

Hi kyuketsuki,

I have what I call "spinning"... I can't stop thinking about 93 things at a time.  So, I do logic problems - sudoku and such - to get my focus down to one thing.  Also, melatonin.  Great stuff!  It changed my life.  I pretty much don't have insomnia anymore.  And I have great dreams!

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 9:15:45 AM)

My brain goes around & off onto tangents & in general just won't STFU!!  I've had insomnia since I was a child.  I've tried every trick I've ever heard of.  Melatonin doesn't do a thing for me.  What I have finally found works is to count my exhalations.  When my brain goes off onto some other topic, I have to bring it back.  If I don't remember the last number I have to start over at 1.  The deal I made with myself is that if I get up to 200, I can get up & do something besides futilely attempting to sleep.  Since I started doing this, I've never gotten past 150 before losing consciousness.

xxblushesxx -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 9:35:11 AM)

I count backwards from 100 but imagine the numbers in my mind made out of different things such as plants, brick, etc. Or I play going on a trip with three answers for each letter. Such as bdsm going on a trip, I'm going on a trip and I'm gonna take arnica gel, ankle chains and an anteater, I'm going on a trip and I'm gonna take arnica gel, ankle chains, an anteater, a buttplug, a ballgag and a bondage book, I'm going on a trip and I'm gonna take arnica gel, ankle chains, an anteater, a buttplug, a ballgag a bondage book, a collar, a chain and a corset...and so on and so on...

If those things don't work, I get up, go downstairs and play on my computer.

i do Sudoku puzzles and listen to quiet music...when i am alone.  With someone i listen to their breathing.

HotFaerieMama -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 11:14:34 AM)

well.. i have insomnia and PTSD. sooo.. i have often sat up with my brain going on like crazy.. and i refuse to take meds.. so i either write..or i just shove it all into a box  and focus on one thing.. untill i find sleep.. oddly enough tho i sleep better when i'm in a relationship .. but.. my brain usually is going 99 miles an hour..regardless of the time/day/what i'm doing.. unless Daddy has my full attention then all my focus .. is on Him and my brain's ramblings.. are quieted ( its never silent in my head)

Another sudoko puzzler here. Counting backwards by 7's from 500. Counting backwards from 500. Counting breaths.
Warm milk is nasty.

I used to do that, but then I started memorizing... sigh.

UniqueRaven -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 12:46:04 PM)

i used to have my mind race for hours until i started meditating regularly. Now i'm able to turn off my mind and just focus on my breathing.

A technique you might want to try is to lie on your right side. The energy channels of the body that inhibit relaxation are compressed when your lying on your right side and you are able to rest more easily. Focusing on deep breaths, counting them down from 100 or 500 can help get your mind to shut off and get some sleep.

ShaharThorne -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 12:49:31 PM)

Usually I count down from 300. My mind is racy because of the rapid thoughts that is common among biploar people (my mind is lewd too). Luckily I have been going to sleep earlier about 8 or 9 pm. This way, Mom gets the computer for bingo playing on pogo.

LanceHughes -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 1:00:08 PM)

As a teenager I complained to Mom that my racing thoughts at bedtime were keeping me from falling asleep.  She made an easy suggestion that has NEVER failed me.  It's been passed around to family and friends and I have gotten back third-hand reports of it working without fail.

I am smart enough to know that doesn't mean others have tried it and not been able to sleep nor that all who have tried have fallen asleep, but haven't contacted me.  What that means is that it seems to work well enough that some people - who have heard of it 3rd or 4th hand - want to tell me about their success enuf to push the message back down the trail. LOL!

Mom G's hint to fall asleep: Simply imagine a blackboard and whatever thought is current, you can think it, but you MUST write it out on the blackboard with chalk in your hand.  I have never gotten beyond a sentence and a half!

All of you, please try it and report back!

Pleasant dreams.

Regards, Lance Hughes

P.S. Nowadays, sometimes all I have to do is imagine the blackboard and pick up the chal........... <snore>

That's a lot like my counting backwards and seeing the numbers in different ways, such as number 100 is white and covered in red roses, number 99 is covered in vines, number 98 has greenery and yellow daisys...it takes a lot of concentration to "see" them.

Seems ALL the methods above are to bring focus to one thought.  IMHO, what I "like" about Mom G's method is that it seems more in tune with the thought process(es) at hand..... There's an "ease," if you will.  When I write one thought out in longhand, I am giving it full reign, rather than trying to suppress it.  I guess the variety appeals to me.... never do know what is going to be written....... LOL!

Your mileage WILL vary, but I'm just wondering if Mom G's method will work for each of you as well as it works for me.

To all you Sudoku solvers: saves the cost of those books of puzzles. LOL! But more importantly, works faster, I'm guessing.

Can't be memorized and doesn't matter if alone in bed or not.

xxblushesxx -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 3:25:07 PM)

Oh, I'm definitely gonna try it Lance. It seems brilliant!!

cpK69 -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 3:38:53 PM)

I try not to think, just see.

I like closing my eyes, and stare toward the back of my mind. The more I focus the darker it gets, until shapes and streaks of light start to appear. Most of the time, I just fade off to sleep, and don’t remember my dreams, but sometimes, I find myself in some very interesting, full color, dreams.

Doesn’t always work though.

LaTigresse -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 3:54:49 PM)

Oh I feel so terrible for anyone that cannot fall quickly to sleep. I am the opposite but I have always done something, since I was a child, that puts me to sleep.

I create a story. Like writing a book in my head. I will be the same one sometimes, for days, weeks, maybe even months. Envisioning the location, characters, often placing myself within the story. It almost always knocks me out within a few minutes. Which is why the same story line can last me so long.

Just a crazy, inner fantasy world.

Funny thing is that, while I have, and usually remember, very vivid dreams....they are never related to the story I was creating before I fell asleep.

heartcream -> RE: what is the last thing you think of? (1/28/2010 6:17:51 PM)

I hug my pillow and imagine of life as I really want it. I usually go to sleep when I am really tired so I fall asleep easy. I like to read before lights out too.
