I understand what you are saying but each church sets its own tone. In Carson City, Nevada, most of the churches of a large variety of demoninations got together to organize a food pantry and thrift store. Food donations were there in the doorway of my church, just drop off canned goods. Another bin for used eyeglasses to give to the work of the Lions. The food pantry provided 2 meals a day every day of the week to the poor and boxes of food to take home. Each church took volunteers to run this charity. This was the work of the christian community, not just one church. When I was at my lowest point in my life, having been unemployed past my unemployment benefits, barely surviving and knowing I could not buy presents for Christmas, a nun from a Catholic Church I never attended showed up at my door two days before Christmas with two lawn/leaf bags FULL of Christmas presents for me and my two kids. We had more presents that year than we had ever had before or since. I don't know how, I was too proud to tell anyone we were so poor. So I am here to tell you that some churches do good in private. You don't know which church IS building homes through Habitat for Humanity or how many members help others. The only thing you can do is organize those kinds of chartiable acts in your own community.
