Status: offline 		The Reason Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation devoted to spreading scientific knowledge and secular values in society. The foundation draws on the talents of prominent and creative thinkers in a wide range of disciplines to encourage critical thinking and erode the influence of dogmatism, superstition, and bigotry in our world.

The reason why I bring this up on a kink site, even if in the off topic section, is because I think that to a certain degree, organizations such as this one which is about being socially more liberal and accepting are to our advantage and help in breaking down our society's ridiculous sex laws.

Anyone else a member? Just curious to hear views.

What is ridiculous about our sex laws? Pray tell.

Evolution is to reproduction as honey is to bees. We in the christian, western societies are without a doubt the most advanced, most dominant, most beautiful and least afflicted by inherited diseases populations of all human populations. That is because of our evolutionary successful reproductive laws. You may not like them, but they are the secret of our success.

Status: offline 		Rule, this is a thread about a website that promotes reason and rationality over superstition. Please don't start another argument about the DNA of Jews being diseased because of circumcision, will you  ? You've already covered yourself with ridicule over this  .

Go to the website and soak some of it up; it won't do you any harm. It's actually very interesting.

No the reason project is a secular

The project has been spearheaded by philosopher, neuroscientist and author Sam Harris and has so far succeeded in attracting the following members to its advisory board:


  • Clifford S. Asness - managing and founding principal of AQR Capital Management
  • Peter Atkins - professor of chemistry at the University of Oxford
  • Jerry Coyne - professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago
  • Richard Dawkins - former Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford
  • Daniel C. Dennett - Austin B. Fletcher Professor of Philosophy, and co-director of the Center for Cognitive Studies at Tufts University

  • Harold Kroto - chairman of the board of the Vega Science Trust; Nobel laureate in chemistry, 1996
  • Bill Maher - comedian, pundit, writer, and host of Real Time with Bill Maher
  • Ian McEwan - award-winning novelist
  • Steven Pinker - Johnstone Family Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University
  • Salman Rushdie - Man Booker Prize-winning author
  • Lee M. Silver professor at Princeton University in the Department of Molecular Biology
  • Ibn Warraq - senior research fellow at the Center for Inquiry specializing in Koranic criticism
  • Steven Weinberg - Josey Regental Chair in Science at the University of Texas at Austin[2]; Nobel laureate in Physics 1979


What an august group! They don't have a group on sexuality, identity and politics yet but I would love to get one going. I wondered if there would be any other interested parties here.

That's your call. It is a very new project, under a year old. It takes effort and collaboration to make it grow. But I can see how some people don't want to have to work for it ;-)

Status: offline 		I'm glad you are enjoying it Katy. I think that for the longest time, there hasn't been a strong enough voice for this. I mean yeah, we had Dawkins but I think that the purpose of being non-secular is to not have some kind of "pope". I like that this is a collective where anyone can sign in, publish, etc.

Dawkins is very interesting. Despite my disagreement with him on how to aggressively approach religion as a psychological phenomenon, I actually like him spearheading the movement.

He has an incisive edge to him. It's funny to watch people who despise him but cannot logically counter most of his points, so they just get upset that he's so harshly critical. As if his wagging a finger at his tone disassembles the intellectual points he makes.

I'm not sure what kind of critique you are implying but I guess that as long as it stays within the spirit of the project, that is to encourage critical thinking and erode the influence of dogmatism, superstition, and bigotry in our world, I think lively debate is welcome.
