Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. Representative John Murtha, a Pennsylvania Democrat and the chairman of a House subcommittee that approves defense spending, is hospitalized in intensive care after complications from surgery. A spokesman for the lawmaker, who has served in Congress since 1974, said Murtha underwent an operation last week to remove his gallbladder and that the new hospitalization is related. “Complications did arise from the surgery and he is currently at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington,” a suburb outside Washington, spokesman Matthew Mazonkey said.

I hope he recovers right into retirement.

MrMister -> RE: Murtha in Intensive Care (2/2/2010 3:20:49 PM)

You mean the John Murtha who made a comment that was something to do with his constituents being "rednecks clinging to their guns and religion" or something of the sorts?

I don't wish any ill will on him and hope he recovers, but I guess there just wasn't enough rednecks within his district to vote him out of office for many a year now.

You're right, he really does need to retire, and hopefully he'll just step aside when and if he gets well.

John Murtha is the Vietnam combat veteran who was disparaged by Dick "five deferments" Cheney for not supporting our troops.

Cheney Picks a Fight With a Marine

As Murtha noted, he's the one who put on a Marine uniform, took his shots in Vietnam and went on to a long career of working with and defending the military, while Cheney is the one who did everything in his power to avoid serving in southeast Asia and has never been seen as a friend of the men and women who actually fight the wars the vice president so shamelessly -- and disingenuously -- promotes.

"I like guys who got five deferments and (have) never been there and send people to war, and then don't like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done," said Murtha, referencing the vice president's long record of draft avoidance in the 1960s.

John Murtha is one of the US's finest elected representatives. I hope he recovers and continues his long career serving his district for as long as he wants.

Being a native Western PA'er....he was right. I  hope he recovers quickly and continues his job.

"Congressman John P. Murtha (PA-12) passed away peacefully this afternoon at 1:18 p.m. at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va. At his bedside was his family," read a statement from his office.

housesub4you -> RE: Murtha in Intensive Care (2/8/2010 2:28:21 PM)

How low can you go, I suppose it is one way for the GOP to gain seats

My prayers are with his family and friends. I didn't agree with him on many issues, but realize that is only superficial when it comes to his health and his family's loss.

Condolences to his family. Murtha was about as crooked as a dog's hind leg but I am still very sorry for his family's loss.

Who are you kidding? Not one of them are angels by a long shot.

Another class act heard from.

But that's what I like about the conservative mindset, no depth too low to plunge to.

How soon we forget... or some of us, anyway.

tazzygirl -> RE: Murtha in Intensive Care (2/8/2010 5:13:41 PM)

A hint of scandal lingered over much of Murtha's career. The FBI named Murtha an "unindicted co-conspirator" in its ABSCAM sting operation in the late 1970s and early '80s. ABSCAM resulted in the conviction of six House members and one senator. The FBI recorded Murtha on videotape declining a $50,000 bribe from federal agents posing as Arab sheiks. But the congressman did say he could be interested in future dealings.

The FBI videotaped Murtha responding to an offer of $50,000, with Murtha saying, "I'm not interested... at this point. [If] we do business for a while, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't", right after Murtha had offered to provide names of businesses and banks in his district where money could be invested legally.[12] The U.S. Attorneys Office reasoned that Murtha's intent was to obtain investment in his district. Full length viewing of the tape shows Murtha citing prospective investment opportunities that could return "500 or 1000" miners to work.

As i have said... none of them are angels.

John Murtha - RIP

He gave me hope that there might be change with his stance against the Iraq War, which was not an easy stance to take....

He was the best America had to offer... he will be missed
