It's just ironic, given the trashing people gave Obama for saying we should talk to our enemies, i.e., Iran.

Hey, if Obama's statements have so much power, can't he just use his voodoo powers and say "Go to Vegas. Hire people. Pass health care reform"?

These are not the droids you're looking for.

I'm truly not understanding why the difficulty is in grasping the just of Merc's post.

I do not know whether or not his statements have negatively impacted LV (although I believe it sure is possible), nor have I done a definitive study, but it doesn't take such to realize someone in the office of the President Of These United States Of America should realize the potential such a statement has for adverse consequences. Why take the risk for crissakes!

Musicmystery -> RE: Is Obama really as smart as he's reputed to be? (2/3/2010 8:07:01 PM)

What patronizing bullshit.

We understand him fine. We disagree with him.

That's the difference between oracles and people with opinions.

Merc, I do think  President Obama could have made his point without having
to single out or name Las Vegas.
Unless, he was going to also include: DisneyLand, DisneyWorld, and every other vacation spot.

But, I was suprised by the numbers you have quoted!
Were the shows still 1/2 filled?

Those shows are expensive, have the prices gone down?

In THIS economic climate, on the verge of a Depression?
THAT many people can still afford the shows?
I would think Vegas would be on the verge of collapsing.
We are doing a lot better than I thought!
I am encouraged!
Thank you!

You need to watch this so you know what you are talking about in the future, blaming Obama is rightwing bullshit.

Has it boiled down to you only see what you want to see and hear what you want to hear, summarily dismissing anything that doesn't fit within your political construct? What ever in the world happened to just plain, good ole common sense?

I look through so many threads here and it truly reminds me of a bunch of bickering children! Of course, I'm not saying everyone here as the propensity to act like a child at times, but it seems pretty common.

edited to add that even if Obama were Einstein, he's not smart enough to run my life, or anyone else's for that matter.

I agree with MOST of your post, Sir.

Try Your luck at the upcoming 'tea-party' event in Nash-ville and tell us what you really think, okay?

Thanks for Your always insightful and usually spot-on opinions.

We'll never know how smart Obama is, he's gone to great lengths to hide his college transcripts from the public.

Yes, if only we could all learn to be as open-minded and accepting of those outside our own political beliefs as you are.  [sm=whoa.gif]

I found this headline from the Las Vegas Sun: Las Vegas sees 10 percent drop in visitors
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2008/nov/12/las-vegas-sees-10-percent-drop-visitors/

The article says in part "
The LVCVA said the number of conventions held in Las Vegas in September dropped nearly 18 percent, with the economic impact of those conventions falling more than 8 percent compared to last year, from about $519 million to $476 million.
Hotel occupancy levels dropped 7 percent, from 91.3 percent in September 2007 to 84.3 percent in September 2008. The average rate of those rooms fell 21 percent, from $142.47 to $112.58, the LVCVA said.
Clark County gaming revenue was down nearly 3 percent compared to last September.
Air traffic is down 13 percent in the past year. The traffic count on Interstate 15 at the Nevada/California state line has fallen nearly 9 percent.
Outside of Las Vegas, visitor volume fell more than 13 percent in Laughlin this past September, and dropped nearly 39 percent in Mesquite."

The article is dated November 12, 2008.  It is sooooo cool that people stopped coming to Vegas based on statements a not-then-president hadn't yet uttered.  It would seem Obama isn't necessarily smart, but he is magic.

I can only attest to what my experiences in life are. I can only make assumptions about others, which is what I've done here based upon the reasoning behind the disagreement to Merc's initial premise. I have done my best to keep and maintain an open-mind. I can be convinced that I may have the wrong stance on political issues, or what ever else, when presented evidence that indicates otherwise. Looking at some folk's stance, I have to wonder if this really and truly is applicable to themselves. Once again, I can only speculate, as I do not know anyone here, but from merely looking at a few of the responses (in this and other threads throughout this forum), it sure seems as such.

Nope.

It's boiled down to you summarily dismissing anything that disagrees with what fits into yours.

Pages of argument here. All you've got is "I'm truly not understanding why the difficulty is in grasping the just of Merc's post." If you like Merc's assumptions, fine. To quite a few of the rest of us, it's fauxtrage, parroting a publicity moment from the mayor of Vegas earlier this week. Playing some kind of "I called it first! You're dismissing my claim!" is childish bullshit.

Call it bickering if you like. If you want to play with the big kids, you'll need more than scolding--people disagree. You're thrusting aside the arguments why, particularly that just because Merc frames something in a preconceived box doesn't mean the lemmings have to march behind him.

Why do you suppose your vision is crystal clear, and those who disagree are dismissive? That must be nice, knowing you have special powers. How's that work for you?

Debating is met with debating. Patronizing bullshit is met with being called on it.

I don't see why this is so hard to understand....common sense and all.......

The organizers of next month’s embattled National Tea Party Convention on Saturday lashed out at everyone from former sponsors and allies to the convention’s financial backers to House Democrats to Rep. Ron Paul’s political group, suggesting all have tried to sabotage the event.

As first reported by POLITICO, the convention came under fire from former supporters and conservative leaders for its high ticket prices, top-down structure and selling of sponsorships for as much as $50,000, as well as the for-profit status of the company running it, Tea Party Nation.

The company shelled out $100,000 to pay Sarah Palin’s speaking fee, while its president Judson Phillips planned to turn a profit from the convention, which he said he intended to use to seed a so-called 527 group.

As sponsors and top speakers have withdrawn and the event has struggled to sell tickets – at $350 a pop – to Palin’s keynote speech, former allies and prominent conservatives have accused Phillips of trying to use the convention to turn a buck or vault him into a leadership role in the decentralized tea party movement.

Isn't that a wonderful testament to yourself!

But apparently it somehow escaped you that in the statement I highlighted in the previous post you were doing exactly what you complain of others doing.

Sanity -> RE: Is Obama really as smart as he's reputed to be? (2/4/2010 6:04:38 AM)

Obama's a moron. He directly contradicts himself in prepared speeches on a regular basis, and he doesn't even seem to realize. As to his having been president of the Harvard Law Review, until he releases his transcripts for all we know that was due to affirmative action.

Why won't he allow the release of his transcripts?

Vegas spent a shit ton of money trying to legislate it's competition away.

Capitalism fail.

The product in vegas is gambling. CA doesn't need to go there for gambling anymore...

Vegas was always a monument, not to capitalism, but to success through government intervention.

Why did you stop after 2008? The economy went down from there.

Las Vegas homeowners had the highest U.S. foreclosure rate last year, In Las Vegas, 12 percent of households received a notice of default, auction or repossessions in 2009, more than five times the U.S. average. Filings there declined in the fourth quarter from the third, as they did in all 10 cities with the highest rates.

For the first 11 months of 2009, convention attendance in Las Vegas was off 25 percent from the same period in 2008, the convention bureau there said.

After declining slightly in the two previous months, Las Vegas-area unemployment increased in December to 13.1%, while Nevada's overall rate of 13.0% gave the state the dubious distinction of having the second-highest unemployment rate in the nation, state and federal officials reported earlier today. Only Michigan, wracked by the collapse of the U.S. auto industry, reported a higher rate: 14.6%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

More than 128,000 Southern Nevadans were jobless in December, an increase of almost 9.500 from the previous month. December was the 12th consecutive month of double-digit unemployment in the Las Vegas Valley.

Compared to December 2008, construction employment in Southern Nevada fell by 23,600 jobs, to 63,000 last month. The number of hotel and casino employees decreased another 24,100, to 146,200.

Pointing out the continuing poor economy throughput 2009; nowhere was it mentioned in any of my posts that Obama's comments had a cause and effect impact. Again, the focus here is on a leader at minimum insensitive to the harsh reality faced by his citizens, or ignorant of them - twice. It's my opinion that it reflects directly on his ability to lead or understand the nature of inspired leadership.

Of course, as MM points out, the people of Vegas should be less concerned about themselves and celebrate the GNP numbers, and stock market results.
