You laugh now but not that long ago a dead man won a Senate seat. Corporations are nothing. I'm waiting for cartoon characters to win! [;)]

Well supposedly George W. and Yosemite Sam are one in the same...

Justice Stevens makes this issue pretty clear:

"In the context of election to public office, the distinctionbetween corporate and human speakers is significant.Although they make enormous contributions to our society,
corporations are not actually members of it. They cannot vote or run for office.

No, no, no- Yosemite Sam is much, much, smarter than Bush...

Actually, this debate harkens back to the days of the mid 19th century when senators were elected with funds from corporate coffers- hence they were known, not by the states that supposedly elected them, but as the Senator from DuPont, the Senator from Union Pacific, for Standard Oil etc. and were as responsive to their electorate as many corporate complaint departments. Seems to me that the corporation running the campaign has just eliminated the hypocrisy....

Sam

Maybe a union and a corporation will run against each other this November. At least now the corporation will have a level playing field.

Maybe their eyes will meet across the aisle and they will fall in love.

Maybe they will unite and give birth to a small business where profits were always up and workers were always happy.

Maybe the whole world is going to hell in a handbasket.

Umm, have you paid any attention to current events?  I'd say the world HAS gone to hell in a handbasket....

The world may not have gone to hell yet, but the world is free falling quickly.

Does anyone really believe this corporation seriously expects to win - or even considers it a possibility? This is a PR firm! It's a PR stunt! They're making a very valid point, of course, but the whole object of this effort is to give themselves a healthy 15 minutes of fame and then sit back and answer the phones that will be ringing off the hook. The further they can carry this, the better for everyone. While they're elevating their image, they're also elevating the debate on that insane SCOTUS ruling and the larger issue of what that ruling says about what we've let our country become. That's the value of this, and that's the whole point.

Well I just finished reading  The Positronic Man . By the end of the book not only is the robot free. But is classified as being human.
Never say never. There is a difference between what can be and what should be.

Actually one of those news links describes the hurdles. It's a little muddy, with the minimum age (25) as you point out being the biggest hurdle. It may well be that running for Congress as a corporation (without the tedious middleman of contributions and other forms of bribes) will be limited to well-established companies like Exxon and the like.

I wonder when our first Corporation will be elected president (minimum age 35 years, please). Thank you, Republicans and George Bush, for making this happen.

Im confused... well.. not really... but i thought the Supreme Court made all this possible. What does Bush or the Republicans ... or the Dems before someone else starts... have to do with this?

It was Bush who appt. Roberts who decided to take the case and morph it from the formal appeal into a ruling on the extraordinarily broad point of all corporate donations directly to a candidate.

It was also Bush who appt. Alito who was in this rightwing-ruling majority.

BTW, both of these judges could have been filibustered and were not by the dems.

well, I dont know that the argument couldnt sucessfully be put forth that if the responsible officers of the incorporation are 25 or more years of age...........

the argument would be that the person in this case the corporation would need to exist for more than what? 25 years is it?

this is fucking hilarious!

I wonder how long before america starts marching on washington or are they simply to damn dumb to understand the difference?

well there are grand juries forming throughout the US, that is common law grand juries and from what I can see there is a huge ass kicking contest gonna happen in my lifetime.  Many predict another civil war.  "real People vs Corporation"

He made that clear in the dissenting opinion, and does not carry the force of precedent or caselaw, at this point.

That is a whole new round of trials.

Arpig -> RE: Corporation to run for Congress in Maryland (2/4/2010 8:14:44 AM)

Wouldn't all the shareholders have to live in the district in question?

They would have to be residents of the state. In some states, there may be age restrictions. Wow, this could get tricky... but.. Wal-Mart for Senator could be a distinct possibility.

I'm working and don't have time to provide links, but I know of 2 states (Maryland...how convenient!...and Nevada) that do not require a business owner incorporating in those states to have an address in those states.  So, theoretically (and probably, too) the person who submitted the paperwork to incorporate may not even live in Maryland.  He could be anybody!!

The corporation will always have more 'political speech' in the bank than any union. A level playing field ? Hardly, unless you jest.

Isn't it true also that a corporation need not consult the shareholders about whom to contribute campaign money but unions management must by law consult the members before supporting a candidate ?

Seems awful curious doesn't it ?

Sam might work for a figure head if Disney wins. I would have suggested Minnie Mouse, but everyone knows she's fucking Goofy.

Don't think so- Warner Bros- not Disney.  Poor Mickey- he was just hung like a mouse....
