UniqueRaven -> The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 10:42:46 AM)

Inspired by the "Dishes you really ought to know how to cook" thread - which i'm thoroughly enjoying!

i walked into the kitchen a bit ago and saw my Le Creuset 2 quart round french oven in cobalt blue which i LOVE - and use almost every day. i love how evenly it cooks, how it holds heat for long slow simmers, and is just the right size for smaller portions - and how it is so pretty to look at that i leave it out pretty much all the time.

And then i thought it would be fun to hear what kitchen tools and utensils you all enjoy using (include outdoor cooking if you want, grilling etc. - and appliances too) and what you think you just couldn't live without.

If you had one, or maybe 2 - 3 items left in your whole kitchen what would they be? And why do you love it/them so much?

For me, in addition to the Le Creuset pan above, i would keep my Shun "Alton's Angle" chef's knife....my absolute favorite. Cuts everything, including tomatoes, perfectly, and is the right size to handle all cutting jobs. Also gotta have bamboo spoons to cook in the Le Creuset.

So i hope to get some ideas about some tools i haven't used yet - and some great ideas how to use them!

Ohhh what a great idea! I would not give up my rice cooker. I love that thing, even more than a crock pot!

Also, really good knives... and I have the most amazing corkscrew (I know it seems silly, but when you can't get a bottle of wine open, well... that just sucks)...

i love my rice cooker, just don't get to use it that much, unfortunately (rice makes me fat [X(])

i LOVE that corkscrew - it's a fishie!!! Can you buy it on Amazon?

definitely my very good knives.  The home where I live now has really crappy knives & i have to use them because my own knives aren't kosher.  [:(]

i'm wondering what do you cook with more than one pressure cooker? i only have one, and i use it maybe once a year when i'm in a hurry to make beans. i'm picturing like a row of pressure cookers simmering.........something? Hmmmmm...........

Paring it down to only three, it would be a cast iron skillet, the big Le Creuset dutch oven in brick red, and my knife set.

But to be honest, there are a lot more things in my kitchen I really love, and would hate to give up. Most of my kitchen stuff has been bought with much thought and deliberation, and over time I accumulated many things I adore.

ShaharThorne -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 11:51:39 AM)

The slow cooker (both of them), the extra thick cookie sheet/pizza pan and the measuring cups/spoons.

No cool knives, sorry...

ETA:  My 14mo niece gnaws on the pastry blender...dang those incoming teeth!

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 11:56:49 AM)

Ooooh!!!  How could I forget the cast iron frying pans???

Bo on the other hand won't tell me what he treasures in his kitchen.  Maybe the professional grade KitchenAid mixer that I got for the household (he loves the dough hook when he makes homemade rolls.).

Fitznicely -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 12:40:01 PM)

Wok, Santoku knife and big fuck-off  iron wok paddle. Couldn't do without 'em :)

Somebody has to say it... MY SLAVE! [:D]

Okay, seriously, it would have to be the crock pot.  I love coming home from work to find my home swirling with the delicious aromas.

My Braun Multi Tool.

The large oval cast-iron pot with lid.

A beautiful, huge, deep Calphalon saute pan

DesFIP -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 12:48:20 PM)

4 1/2 qt kitchenaid standing mixer. Can handle heavy holiday loads with no trouble.
Some of the newer models have plastic gears instead of metal, you don't want that. The plastic will break under stress.

30 baked stuffed potatoes inside of no time once baked, no problem.
6 dozen cookies for a school party produced in minutes, ready to bake and pack, no problem.
3 layer cheesecake for maximum wow factor, easy to do.

This thing has done it all.

CarrieO -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 1:03:15 PM)

If we're talking bare essentials...

My big 'ol well-seasoned cast iron skillet and lid (doubles as a shallow dutch oven), a very sharp chef's knife and a olive wood spoon/laddle I bought years ago.  Yes, there are lots of other fancy tools I like to have around but if we're going back to basics, give me these three items and I'll cook you a grand meal!

sunshinemiss -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 1:06:32 PM)

You know, it's funny.... I'm going through all mystuff and it's amazing what I"m keeping, what I'm not. My good wooden rice paddle and tongs, a dozen sets of stainless steel chopsticks, an amazing peeler and a can opener (hand held - it cuts along the side rather than the top of the can), some wooden bowls that I had made years ago, and some home made coasters (dark wood with some sort of paper covering them). I'm also keeping my traditional Korean tea set. It's beautiful.

Finally, I'm keeping a sort of grill thing you put in the fire to make red bean paste filled fish shaped cakes. I found this blog about them.

LaTigresse -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 1:31:11 PM)

I've had to walk away and start from scratch and survived so I would say, my hands and my knowledge.

scifi1133 -> RE: The last kitchen tool you'd give up (2/4/2010 1:31:24 PM)

Wok, Food processor, chefs knives.
