I don't know if ShiftedJewel and I would qualify as geeks or not, but both of us started out on computers before they had hard drives and required "real" floppys. We didn't have to deal with any issues of being puter geeks in school, er, uh, they didn't have them yet. Geeez, I was lucky to have a calculator with led readouts..ha ha. Nowdays though, we still enjoy a good battle playing Neverwinter-Nights...and of course require our slave (twicehappy) to cast her spells with the best of them as well.

Jacen -> RE: Self-identified geeks (3/27/2006 9:16:42 PM)

Yay geeks! My first memory is of an Atari 2600... and I have several stacks of sci-fi books taller than me... I'm just surprised nobody has mentioned Firefly yet.

Real0ne -> RE: Self-identified geeks (3/28/2006 5:33:16 AM)

i always thought of a geek as someone who was highly educated usually in the computer industry or scientific background where they literally walked around staring into space because they were so deep in thought all the time while working on some highly intellectual design usually.

thats my take on it.

AngelaK -> RE: Self-identified geeks (3/28/2006 9:03:08 AM)

Oh gosh, my idea of big fun in high school was an evening feeding quarters into video games. My friends were not jocks and cheerleaders, my friends were in band. I was in the physics and drama clubs, an honors student, played DnD (because that's what my friends did).  When I got tired of DnD I moved on to live action roleplay so I could actually hit people with foam swords. In college I rushed the sororities. Out of 436 girls I was the first one NOT to receive an invitation back. Trust me, I was a geek. But it was fine, the girls I made friends with during rush week all ended up hating sorority life and I loved my dorm. I suppose I've always liked being a little different.

Don't all of us geeks like being a little different?

BrutalAntipathy -> RE: Self-identified geeks (3/28/2006 9:08:42 AM)

Firefly rocked! Damn them to rerun hell for cancelling it. And may Joss Whedon be staked by Buffy for not putting in the effort to ressurect it.

Actually (based on my own experiences in that industry) if you see an IT or academic geek walking around staring into space, they are either:

1) having a kinky sexual fantasy (these usually disappear into the john or their office at some point)
2) tripping (it's fun when they freak out)
3) wishing they hadn't cancelled (insert name of any sci-fi series here)
4) figuring out an innovation to improve the way we route traffic across the Internet (that was a guy I worked with)

I do wub my scifi.  And my computer games.  And the book pile of doom (rather my collection of books has started to overwhelm my apartment, so I think it's crossed into the critical mass phase).  I did get into firefly only after severe prodding, but I was into MST3K by 7th grade.

Perhaps I'm nerdly.  I don't like the word geek.

*edited to add D&D-ness.

A discussion I had at a local munch recently was sort of curious. A woman brought up that she considered herself a "geek" growing up-- largely because of her interests-- sci-fi, dungeons & dragons games, etc. A surprising number of the people present jumped in immediately and said they considered themselves the very same, and had had many of the same interests while growing up. I thought it was pretty funny that so many people who are now embracing a fairly edgy lifestyle all seemed to have similar formative experiences.

How many of you out there would put yourself in the same category?

I'm not sure if I'm a true geek.  I've always been a loner and into wierd stuff.  I like geek things (Sci-Fi, computers, etc).  All my friends are bonafide geeks. I get along with geeks very well.  Actually, all my ex's (cept maybe 2-3 really short lived relationships) are geeks.

I am a self-proclaimed geek-addict.  My geek friends have called me a geek-wannabe.

I love geeks, what else is there to say?

(oh and yes Firefly.. [sm=frown.gif]  Why oh why do they cancel all the good shows??)

Nope Pavel.. you're a geek.   A nerd is someone who wears glasses with tape, hikes his underwear and pants up above his natural waist, and wears a pocket protector (or the fashion equivalent to this).   A geek is like a nerd on the inside, however, is smart and versatile, has more social skills than a nerd (thus also tends to make more money), and enough fashion sense to at least blend into the woodwork as semi-normal.

Be a geek.. and be proud. [:)]  Now if only they'd let me into the club. *sighs*

TeeGO -> RE: Self-identified geeks (4/3/2006 11:05:53 PM)

Damn, if I can admit to being a male submissive I guess I can admit to this.

The Lord of the Rings movies really piss me off.  Too many turns away from the books.  Frodo was an old Hobit, not of an age with Sam, Pipin, and Merry.  It was years after Bilbo's party when they started on their trek. Don't get me started.  Where's Tom Bombadil?

Somebody mentioned Zork.  God I loved those games.  Still have the infocom games on floppies.

OK, I lived for Doctor Who on WTTW channel 11 in Chicago on Sunday nights at 11.

I saw the original Star Wars a mere 13 times on the big screen.  Star Trek?  I can do the "Live long and prosper" gesture with both hands.

There's more but is that enough?  Am I in?

Dollbecky -> RE: Self-identified geeks (4/4/2006 12:01:14 AM)

I am a geek[8|] and so is my Beloved!

ArtCatDom -> RE: Self-identified geeks (4/4/2006 1:19:15 AM)

On my sweet Creator, I am such a geek.

Sci-fi and horror (especially terribly amusingly bad sci-fi and horror) are bread and butter for me. H.P. Lovecraft is a godly being of literature to me, as is Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Heinlein. I also write & publish a fair amount of cross-genre fiction involving scifi and dark fantasy elements.

I love board games, especially railroad building games. I maintain a website for and help run a vampire LARP. I've also played a fair number of other roleplaying games.

I am a regular contributor to and editor of Wikipedia.

I read some scientific papers and legal decisions on a hobby basis.

I help some friends with grad school papers.

I did Rocky Horror Picture Show cast at a couple local theatres (usually as Doctor Scott, but I've made my rounds through characters).

I love 'geek' films such as Terry Gilliam movies, Monty Python movies, *insert 80s fantasy movie here*, Pump Up The Volume, Heathers, Jacob's Ladder, Lost Highway, The Hunger, etc etc etc.

I was in Chess, Computer and Art clubs. Even worse Computer Electronics was my High School major.

I "wasted" thousands of dollars and countless hours going to college to not finish a degree. I took more than enough credit hours than I'd ever need for even a double major. However, I focused on classes I wanted to take, which included nearly all of the philosophy, religious studies and political science classes I took. That's right, I went to college to do nothing but read Hegel and other insane philosophers for not other reason than I loved the knowledge I was hunting.

I'm sure there's more to list, but the top of my head is emptied and that's quite good enough. :)

I am a "real and true" geek.

I wrote my first programs on a mainframe-when I was 12.  I sold my first piece of software (which I wrote on my VIC-20) at 16.  I developed my first few websites in a text editor. I have done front-line telephone tech support-and then made fun of the lusers. I wrote a cyberpunk novel. I've been an NT admin and a UNIX sysadmin-on a local backbone network.

Oh my! Commodores!!!!!!!!!

I love Commodores.

I miss them. *sniffle*

We are definitely geeks. and occasionally let otakuness drip into the BDSM side ("On your knees, and fansub this!")

Anyone have suggestions for good "games" to play with geek subbies?

I can't imagine one of the geeks I have worked with fitting that description.   Admittedly, these are hard-core and very leet Linux/Unix/Internet hardware/Telco geeks.  Social skills are things that they have heard of, but don't quite grok.  People frighten them, or they just plain hate everyone who isn't part of the leet ubergeek treehouse gang.

Their income is due to their rather uncommon skillsets (requires a mix of rocket science and brain surgery), and their clothing is best not described, although the word "unflattering" comes to mind as a kind way of saying they should burn all their clothes and start over.

*laughs* well I said they had BETTER social skills than a nerd.. I didn't say they were perfect. [:D]

And I know several geeks who wear unflattering clothes.. most I know wear the normal geek suit.. oversized t-shirt (usually a free one from some kind of geek-conference or one from a Sci-fi Con) and jeans.  But geeks tend to avoid wearing bowties with their button up shirts and suspenders.. that would throw them into the nerd category for me.

And Phoenix.. the guys you just mentioned sounded Hott.  They sound exactly like a lot of my friends.

loveyourflyingv -> RE: Self-identified geeks (12/7/2007 9:42:57 PM)

I actually had a lot of friends and was very social in high school! But now, almost 3 years later, I am such a nerd! I live for adult swim, especially Metalocalypse and Bleach and I write slash fanfiction. Ironically, the same time I got into slash, I started exploring BDSM heh
