Status: offline 		A discussion I had at a local munch recently was sort of curious. A woman brought up that she considered herself a "geek" growing up-- largely because of her interests-- sci-fi, dungeons & dragons games, etc. A surprising number of the people present jumped in immediately and said they considered themselves the very same, and had had many of the same interests while growing up. I thought it was pretty funny that so many people who are now embracing a fairly edgy lifestyle all seemed to have similar formative experiences.

How many of you out there would put yourself in the same category? (At the risk of being flamed, I imagine those who actually call themselves Goreans-- adopting a lifestyle based on fantasy/ sci-fi novels, may largely qualify de facto).

Status: offline 		For about the last 10 years I have been very much into the sci-fi/fantasy games etc, but growing up, I was in no way what we used to term a 'geek'. In fact, I went out of my way in grade and high school to ridicule the ones who were in the D&D, computer, and chess clubs etc ( hmm, and the cheerleaders, and the smart ones....heck, I was horrible in school and just down right horrible to everyone )

Status: offline 		LOL...I saw the heading for this topic, and had to reply.  We are both Self Proclaimed Geeks/Nerds, etc.  That is one of the reasons the Hubby and I get along so well.  We have nearly everything in common. 

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Tabletop Gaming, Console RPGs, reading, anything on the Sci-Fi Channel, Star Trek.  The list goes on and on.  Absolutely, we'd put ourselves in this category.  And we're not ashamed of it, either.

We've noticed the same thing, along with (at the risk of being flamed) a large portion of those involved in the Lifestyle have a background in medicine (Doctors, Nurses, EMTs, etc) and Catholicism (brought up, non-practicing, and practicing alike).

I was into scifi/fantasy. Rather find someplace to hide away and read books if I wasnt busy playing sports. Now as an adult I prefer spending time still reading or hiking in the mountains. I do have social skills and interact well with people in person. But just that part of me always longs to do things that dont require interacting with large groups of people.

Status: offline 		LOL!  Definite Geekdom here!  Master, when not tying up nubile young things and performing wicked deeds upon their bodies, was (and still is) a gamer.  I was a band geek (and a reluctant brainiac) who didn't really fit into any particular group, except band.

Status: offline 		Geek?...humm not sure actually..maybe to some I was,,maybe to others I was not..I was into drama and debate clubs ...but I also had my own group of friends I hung with..I think I considered myself more a part of the invisible masses ...be well...Tempting

I've never found sci-fi appealing, never watched Star Trek save for one or two late night bouts of insomnia when it was the only alternative to an infomercial for the Ronco Juicer and role play games have never appealed to me. I hung out with friends, got good grades, went to movies (unless they were sci-fi LOL) and shopped. I'd say my teen years were particularly unremarkable.

Status: offline 		I'm a geek. Always have been. Now, my off time is spent playing Star Wars Galaxies online. I have 3 accounts and 4 characters. When not gaming, I have my nose stuck in a book. I'm also able to diagnose and fix most of my computer related issues. Most of the time, I'd rather deal with computers than people. <g>  Long live the geeks!

This is something I've discussed at length with other people in the computer gaming industry. Somewhere down the line, it became "cool" to be a geek. It wasn't when we were geeks without popularity. But now that geeks are suddenly into a lot of wealth and clout, people who really aren't geeks are quite proud to start calling themselves that. A very close friend of mine who is a known computer game designer laughed to me a few months ago when he said that he wondered who the hell these other "geeks" were because he didn't feel cool enough to be in their presence.

i'd say i qualify, but not in the sci-fi sense of the word.  i'm a music and film geek.... when you read the definition... i think it could apply to a lot of people who are involved in the lifestyle.  (and no, i'm not calling anyone obsessive)

Master, His wife and i are all geeks. He and i are gamers, she and He do SCA and read sci-fi, He studies and i dabble in alternative and earth religions, He and i like anime, and we are all huge movie and music buffs (techno/hard rock). He plays lots of D&D in the Camarilla group, also.

/NIN concert in Bossier City/Shreveport LA, only 4 hours away from BR... fan-freaking-tastic performance.

Status: offline 		Outside of the debate club I was not really a geek as a child. When I became an adult I definetly started to move toward that side quite a bit. Give me a nerdy tech guy to talk to any day over some blowhard salesman.

I am not surprised that many "geeks" as teenagers are in the lifestyle. In many ways it takes the same confidence to embrace this lifestyle outside of society's norms as being passionate about things that are not "cool" and knowing you will be labled or picked on in high school.

Not afraid to live by your own rules!
