I built and owned a company I sold in 92, and retired early and moved to the beach..... I have the documents to prove my story if you care to actually call my hand instead of acquisations of your imagination.... I have benefited greatly by individual liberities that once were, and no child growing up in this land should consider trading freedom for 'benefits' dangeled like candy in front of them if only they will vote for a 'caring' adminstration.... its as phoney as you are....and those like you that think you are going to have this nation dance to your tune.....ain't gonna happen.... I am a self made man unafraid to face down any advsary anytime, anyplace..... I hate socialist, and loud mouth know it alls who expouse their liberal shit.... We have been quiet for far too long and now its time to send a message so powerful as to rock these truds back on their heels and deliever what amounts to a 'shut up' and live...or keep running that mouth and get  your teeth knocked out....its simple....leave America the fuck alone, and live your dumbass existance in your own stupidity....we don't want to hear what you have to say...we don't care what you have to say.... and we are TIRED of the socialist shit.....  If you don't like us, then fucking LEAVE!!...go start you own stupid country and make Obama your dictator....who fucking cares!  But you are going to get out of my life....my wallet, and my schools....and off my television..... or you will surely dread being alive.....get it?

Even stuff that was mainstream thinking a generation ago like health care for all and progressive taxation is suddenly "Socialist!"

... by the nutcake teabagger crowd. Meanwhile, even mainstream Republican voters know that the antitrust-exemption-protected corporate welfare program known as the private health insurance industry is an inefficient, bloated mess that primarily just keeps an executive class in Jaguars and the advertising industry flush. A recent poll found that even a majority of Republicans in the famous "swing districts" (that's in the "purple", not kinky, sense) favor a public health insurance option to keep our runaway health care costs tamed.

http://fdlaction.firedoglake.com/2010/01/26/51-of-self-identified-republicans-in-swing-districts-favor-a-public-option/

All that remains is to get a Congress that is in the industry's pockets to actually implement it. No small task clearly - especially when the media depends so much on insurance industry advertising (ironically paid for by your insurance premiums) that it has a vested interest in relegating talk of a public option to the backburner. But the public is so in favor of this (between 60 and 80% depending on the poll) that it's no longer funny. What a disconnect.

The Americal Division had the largest AO in Viet Nam and the address of the Que Shan valley is surely know to the 196th Inf Brigade as well as the first Marine Div...Chu Lai was where we operated out of along the OV-10 Bronco aircraft assigned to find and kill the many hard core NVA operating in the area.... yeah, like 1970 was a picnic or something.... we did our part and no units were better than those I served with..... We came home to turds that met planes throwing shit on them as they yelled 'baby killers'... I have a personal war with liberals dating back to that time and I plan to continue that war until the 'bleeding hearts'... just bleed period.... that would make my day....

kittinSol -> RE: the new socialism (2/9/2010 7:53:12 AM)

I'll call on you next time I have a particularly heavy period - you don't know what "bleedin' libewal" means until you've had some of my tampon tea.

Jeffff -> RE: the new socialism (2/9/2010 7:54:39 AM)

cuckyman -> RE: the new socialism (2/9/2010 8:00:02 AM)

There was not ever a 'mainstream' following of ANY libeal ideas....Social Security is about to crash and burn and Medicare is broke....ALL govenment programs are a ponzi scheme and its all about to come crashing down on Obama's ears.... The people are the strength of this land...not a fucking ass sitting, bloated, bull shit, unethical government.....  and if I think what is about to happen, in fact happens, a new day of very very limited federal power is about to dawn... The feds are going to be neutered, and the power and money going back down to the states...just as the framers intended..... and in that time a new rebirth of freedom will once again make this nation the envy of the world.....  and the libs are about to become roadkill......  November comes, and with it a stampede of people hungry to cut the balls off the federal government......  hide and watch....

cuckyman -> RE: the new socialism (2/9/2010 8:01:42 AM)

We worked with OV-10 FACs a great deal...I never said I was a Bronco pilot.... who the fuck are you....we you in-country or a maggot infested left winger?

Man, it's amazing the amount of energy you have to put out all day trying to compensate for being a cuckold. It sounds as if you're aware that most of your fellow conservatives (who are really overgrown boys, still fighting for their place of honor in Spanky's He-man Woman Haters Treehouse) consider your desire for "female led authority" a central symbol of the "weakening and feminization of America". They go on and on about this, so don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about.

Just go with the desires, man, and enjoy them. Accept the whole of yourself. Find some woman who digs it and be happy together. Fuck the guys down at the American Legion (well not literally - unless you want to), and what they think of you. This is your life.

Go, and find peace.

As an admitted socialist I find it hilarious when Americans call Obama a socialist...he's far to right-wing for my tastes.

It cracks me up too. The man cannot even get his mouth around the phrase "public option", even though a majority of Americans know we need one. Instead he tried to get a very watered-down centrist plan through Congress, but the Republicans here wouldn't even support that - not because it was bad policy, but because allowing things to improve here would make Obama look good, and they'll never get back in power if that happens.

Obama did spend a huge sum of public money right off the bat in an economic stimulus to keep us from sliding into a depression. Economists from across the political spectrum virtually all agreed it was necessary. Same with the bank bailouts, which were started by the well-known socialist George W. Bush.

Obama has been pretty mainstream centrist since coming into office. The funniest part about the "socialist" cry is that the same people throwing that word around are criticizing him for being too buddy-buddy with Wall Street. It just really makes you wonder about their sanity.

Okay, I'll bite.

Based upon the definition given above, why is socialism a better avenue for our government to take, as opposed to our government providing an environment that enables us to better take care of ourselves?

Okay, let's take a typical family, mother, father and adult kids. We can be traditional here and say that the father is the head of the household and makes the decisions. He goes out to work, his wife goes out to work, as do both their adult children. The bills get paid, there's food on the table, both the adult kids study and the adult daughter is raising her own baby son. There's also grandmother living off a pension.

Father goes off fishing every other weekend, mother is interested in sewing and dressmaking, adult son likes listening to music and adult daughter is a keen photographer. However they all club together to help grandmother pay her bills and send her off to Florida twice a year. They also chip in to ensure the baby has all he needs.

If you understand this then you understand the essence of socialism - which is just like the family - everyone working for the common good. Work isn't a luxury or a privilege, it's a right and the worker is equipped to independently own the means of their labour, through a state education system which prepares you for occupation and employment. Welfare isn't something which replaces or is instead of work, but is there for those who cannot work, whether it be through age, sickness, whatever. You also have a universal public healthcare system, where you are treated in accordance with your symptoms and illness and not in accordance with your insurance coverage.

It's not a perfect system, one of the pitfalls in practice is the amount of planning required for adequate provision of public services, for example, and I would also argue that it requires a certain amount of social unity, and both social and economic stability for it to work, but it is certainly no worse a system than any other. It has worked (and is still working) in a number of countries, for example in Scandinavia where - contrary to what many Americans believe - it is not incompatible with either freedom of personal expression or capitalism.

Faced with some of the biggest threats in our history, not just widespread poverty, destitution and unemployment, but also organized crime and international terrorism, not to mention the demographic imbalance in the near future of having more elderly people than the working population, I feel it might also be the key to a solution.

As I said, I do not intend to come across that you are evil, despicable, or whatever else, for believing what you do. I am just hoping to better understand your position.

...well, your question is a minor hijack, because i started this thread to try to understand why the word has had its meaning bastardised so much.

However, let me share with you my take on it. i don't believe in pure socialsim, but neither do i believe in pure capitalism. i believe that the best governmental style is what's known as the mixed economy. Elements are operated by the government, while the greater part is privately owned. Specifically, i believe that infrastructure should be owned by the people via the government, while the only government influence in the rest of the economy is to provide regulations to ensure that fraud and dangerous business practises are kept to a minimum.

Hope that answers your question, at least as far as i'm concerned.
