So how come so many of our fellow posters clearly have no idea what socialism actually means? Is it a failure of the US education system? Or a reflection of a terminally dishonest political system? Or is it wilful ignorance? Or something else?

I tried asking this once, though I was a little more polite and trying to ascertain whether socialism meant something different across the pond.

I think KS hit the nail on the head, paranoid fear from the people at the top leading to misinformation

It's been intentionally and effectively obfuscated for a long time, the purpose of which is always to scare people.

I will give you an example.

you pay taxes, they created a liability and its against the law to create a liability with no remedy!  We do know that do we not?

Anyway there is a remedy for paying taxes and it is in law.

Now wanna tell me where it is?

Oh shucks.  They taught you about paying but forgot to teach about the remedy how NOT to pay!

Now only those at the top know how to get the remedy, which is to say those close to those who make the rules.

so when dealing with the government just remember these simple steps.

Rule1)  if they open their mouth its a lie.

Rule2) if you have any doubt see rule 1.

and before that, McCarthyism, and before that, the Red Scare.

It's been a politico-corporate tool for a century. Workers wanted to organize. So they were labeled as radical.

The current crop of anti-socialists ie anti-egalitarianists are the children of McCarthyism.
 
It's predicated on a percieved fear of losing a 'way of life'. To suscribe rabidly to capitalism means you believe you will eventually be at the top of the pile.
 
The inherent flaw in that is that everybody cannot be at the top of the pile.
 
It's not that people are turning from elements of capitalism because it doesn't work, it's that it only works for some, and progressively, fewer people.
 
Plus, anti-socialism also allows you to rant about immigration, governmental control, Russia, China, social welfare and all the usual hotkeys.

Socialism simply means that those that expounse this philosphy are enemies of the country I grew up in...these people are people that must be found, identified, and watched carefully....and if at all possible exported to a country that agrees with them...they have no place in a captialistic society....it is simply a historically failed system that has denied freedoms, and extorted money from citizens that choose to live differently..... It will be, and must be stopped in its tracks and its supporters rounded up....pure and simple..... and I for one that has, and will again go to war to stop its spread by any means available..... plain enough for you?.....

and your parents sent you to school to learn this?....good god, your father must really be proud of his brand new communist..... by benefitting yourself, you unknowingly benefit others is the root of capitalism....that and freedom....your side only offers others who take freedom away, and decide what you will get.... I will fight to the last breath to defeat and destroy those that believe this garbage....socialism is evil....and so are those that support it....

The real slime on this site are socialist turds that are trying to mainstream their philosophy....it ain't gonna happen..... hide and watch the fate of the socialist in America for coming soon to a thearter near you will be a reawakening of America, and with it....a bunch of folks are just going to get run the fuck off!  Don't bet against it....we have had enough of socialist pukes and its time they go somewhere else....
