Where I worked we required every new worker to take and pass a CDL- A test within 6 months before they could become full time employees. Some could not read so we provided them an employee to help them with study time and set up a verbal test with the state agency. There were no problems at all.

I'd like to have seen that at a well-known company (at least in my industry) where I once worked.  People in the production side of the house were allowed to bring interpreters with them to the interview.

bonus points if folks can guess the 2 languages supervisors needed to know...

I agree with you completely...where did I ever say anything different?

How many millions of immigrants do you think had to learn English and take a civics test... they managed.

I am just saying the idea is not racists.

Butch

I would disagree... those who do not want brown people to vote and think that literacy tests will keep them from it, well yeah, that is racist

And in many cases, cringe at the thought of the ignorance and cluelessness of those for whom they are voting.

Does anyone care that the Supreme Court already struck down such tests?

[Yeah, I guess it was a silly question...]

Poor poor julia, try to dry your tears. No one has said a thing about disallowing "brown" people from voting, the problem thats being discussed is how to keep illegal immigrants from voting.

And if you had read my links provided in an earlier post perhaps you would have seen that since there is an education gap between minorities and White people that minorities would be the ones that had a disproportionate trouble with such a test... and then there is the unfair application of such tests in which in certain districts they would be unfairly implemented also... just like during Jim Crow...

You know, find a nonpartisan study that shows illegal immigrants voting is a huge problem.. enough to disenfranchise legal voters? The thing is, the more people vote, the less republicans win... so y'all want to make it as hard as possible to vote... kinda revolting

Most excellent, Kitty.  They were Tagalog and Portuguese.

There are illiterate white ...red… and yellow people too dear...now who is being a racist...do you think only brown people can be illiterate…you are typical.

tazzygirl -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:03:43 AM)

Define illiterate.... there are a few definitions. We need a working model for this discussion.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:13:57 AM)

Someone that can't write or read a particular language.

The three R’s: reading, riting, rithmetic[:D]

mnottertail -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:15:48 AM)

my mandarin is horrible.

Uschi Deschi

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:18:01 AM)

The good thing about Mandarin is that you can use random symbols from character map and still mean something.

mnottertail -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:20:00 AM)

which one is 'recieve blowjob', please?

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:25:09 AM)

We all know he was trying to gain political support by saying something popular among the Tea Party faithful. I don't believe the statement he made was racist in itself... I don't know what was in his heart. But to claim he is a racist based on that statement is wrong.

When I was talking of the tests I was talking of the requirements for naturalized citizens... they are required to take a civics test. I thought that was ironic.

Butch

popeye1250 -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:51:34 AM)

Voter litercy tests? The Dems will try to block that, half of their "base" can't read or write.

mnottertail -> RE: Tea Party speaker calls for voter literacy tests (2/10/2010 9:52:56 AM)

and since none of the republican base can read, and little understand what they hear or see.......

God popeye, you are your own worst enemy.

I quoted references and stats... you are just attacking with no information to back you...

I work in a field that is used to address questions like these, and in fact just took a class that addressed what I am saying last semester.... and I have to say it is not shocking for people of different ethnic backgrounds to know that money gets spent on predominantly White kids than on kids that live in ethnically diverse and migrant neighborhoods... so please save your accusations of racism...THAT is typical from someone who does not want to address the education disparity that truly exists in this country

What you are saying is that if a person is not able to read or write, but pays their taxes, well they have less rights than you.... and that is unAmerican
