Iran "permanently bans" Gmail.

The suspense is killing me... perhaps it has something to do with their moves yesterday.

quote:

DEVELOPING: Iran's telecommunications agency announced Wednesday that it has permanently suspended Google's e-mail services and that a national e-mail service for Iranians will be rolled out soon.

It is not clear what effect the order has had on gmail in Iran. Google has not yet commented about the announcement. Google on Tuesday unveiled a new service called "Buzz," a social networking tool built into its gmail service.

The announced suspension of gmail comes as Iranian authorities have deployed in force across Tehran to conduct last-minute security sweeps and warn residents to refrain from joining antigovernment protests planned for Thursday -- the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

They might be releasing an IPO today to compete with Google.[8D]

Gosh, that's going to inconvenience nearly as many westerners as the ban on Danish imports did, isn't it? Manufacturers of bacon, vodka and porn had their revenues ruined that year...

I'm fucking stunned.....

No, No....

Shocked and Awed.

They got us by the shorthairs now.

They'd have to use multiple bombs with very high yields (hydrogen bombs) to get a worldwide EMP.

AnimusRex -> RE: Khamenei: 'punch which will stun West' (2/10/2010 8:56:56 PM)

Well no one knows what is going on inside their heads, but looking at it from the outside, its hard to imagine an upside for them in launching a direct attack on the West; it would only have the effect of solidifying the West against them, losing their support in China and Russia, and risking an actual shooting war which they would lose.

It seems a lot better for them to rattle the saber, in hopes of rallying the country around a trumped up enemy, to distract from the political turmoil going on there.

If there was ever a case for using chemical and biological weapons...

That would not be a good idea. There is no way to keep those localized. Chemicals and germs don't stay put. At the height of the cold war Russia had enough chemical weapons to kill everybody on the planet at least 20 times over.

Ahmadinejad has announced Iran has produced 20% enriched uranium.

Link forthcoming.

I heard on a talk show that it can take as little as 6 months to go from 20% to about 90%. If it's true that is not good for anyone.

I have no doubt they will enrich it as far as they can. No matter what they say publicly. I gives the talking heads something to allay peoples fear with. No matter the crazy words or actions they have steadily been making progress.

A trusted technique that's been very, very effective over here.

Yep, the 20% enrichment is only a fraction of their capabilities. They will run at this capacity for around 6 months then turn it up when they want to tweak the nose of the west again. They may even be using the announcement to mask that at one of their enrichment facilities they are going to try and produce weapons grade uranium.

You know the old distract em with this hand so they don't pay attention to what we are really doin, ploy.

I wonder what he's putting in this punch, anyway? I didn't think shi'ites were allowed booze.

I thought it was fermented fruits and grains that were not allowed, perhaps it is some sort of honey based concoction?

The question is, can Obama as President manage a real world having only academic theory as experience to draw upon?

It is a shame that he has surrounded himself with people that have only academic theory as experience as well.

It is also amazing how well those that that those that have had "real life" experience have always exceeded in such a spectacular fashion.

I think it is, but that's pretty much all booze apart from mead. I know a lot of fundamentalists (who presumably haven't read the Koran) take the line that it applies to all alcohol without exception, whatever it's made of.

Domi,
Who do you have in mind?

The way the cards are stacked now, even with experience to get elected you have to be too beholding to special interests to effectively use that experience even if the person had that ability in the first place.

I think the last President with "real life" experience was Truman. He was also the last President without a college degree; he owned a haberdashery. However, Eisenhower's WWII resume was also practical, but he spent his White House years honing his golf game.

Bonus points if, without looking it up, you know what the 'S' stood for in Harry S Truman.

Weirdly enough, as I recall, it didn't stand for anything. His middle name was just "S". Icould be wrong about that, though.
