I think the Y axis would be better described in terms of whether one believes society can cooperate in improving conditions or whether one believes that society is a competitive theatre whereby progress is achieved through market forces/ "survival of the fittest".

This makes things difficult for me however, in that although I'd like to think we might cooperate, the world around me suggests that the alternative is more often the case and this regardless of the prevailing political model. And rather than cancelling one another out, these two positions rather leave me with a foot on both sides of the Y axis where its bisected by the X.

Similarly, though I distrust the intentions of government and would wish for it to be as small as possible, the dog eat dog nature of the world around indicates to me that frequent government intervention to regulate things is necessary to limit and control what are the effects of nature all in all, in the excesses of the strong over the weak. Again this doesnt leave me in the centre, but puts me on both sides of the line at once, depending on the specifics of any situation.

I think what such a graph might prove useful for - in the context of my own situation specific positions - would be to identify those whose positions are more driven by a fixed ideology than a flexible, practical approach?

In that light, would it be worth pointing out that Pournelle is notorious for his almost messianic libertarian viewpoint in SF circles? Look him up on wikipedia: this is the man who wrote half of Oath Of Fealty and Footfall.

All I know is, no matter who is in charge, I get screwed, while the top 1% get along just fine.

IB? Where do you find yourself on the political spectrum?

Wow what an interesting and fun thread, IB!

Using that chart, I find myself 3,3.
I am on that line that is going straight down the middle, horizontally and vertically.
Right where the blue statism line intersects with the rationalism line.

If you could put a small circle smack in the middle of that chart, that is where I would be.

That might be where you perceive yourself, Mia, but aren't you suggesting on another thread that providing housing to a newly relocated worker is a legitmate function of our government?  You are up a bit into that top right corner, on this chart, just as I'm stuck squarely to the left side.

Rich, I am in the middle!!!!
This is my story, and I am sticking with it!

I voted for Kucinich the last time I had the option.  I think that puts me off the chart.

They need to make a chart because I would have voted for him had it been an option by the time the primaries came to my state

I score consistently in the "various conservatives" area on all of these assessments.

Sorry for the delay in replying, things have been pretty busy in RL.

When I was younger I suppose I was somewhere in the upper left quadrant. I tend to view government as a sort of necessary evil - it needs to be around to handle certain things but it needs to be limited and kept in check - and I felt that people, basically left alone, would act in a more or less rational manner and that most social problems could (at least theoretically) be solved through the use of reason.

As I've aged, my views on government haven't changed much - if anything they've intensified. The government has turned out to be more corrupt and incompetent than I could possibly have envisioned twenty years ago - so entrusting them with more seems to me to be the height of idiocy, but I've come to the conclusion that there's a huge emotional or irrational component to people and society - people do not always act rationally or reasonably nor can they be trusted to do so. I'm not sure whether this is simply due to my gaining more experience or if people have come to act in a less rational fashion over the past few decades. So I suppose I'm now in the lower left quandrant although I'm not quite comfortable with this. I wouldn't paint myself as either "counter culture" or "anarchist". I suppose I'd call myself "anti-Establishment" but that might just be sophistry.

AnimusRex -> RE: Where do you fit in the political spectrum? (2/17/2010 6:47:51 PM)

Here is a link to an article by Timothy Ferris, who creates a diagram much like your original link, where instead of a single line going from one extreme to another, it is a two axis graph, with progressive at one end, conservative at the other, then a vertical line going from liberal to totalitarian.

In this graph, "liberal" is defined as John Locke and the Founders defined it, as being free to behave as we wished, within reasonable limits. So both progressives and conservatives can be either liberal or totalitarian.

Which dovetails nicely with my own observation. Within every political group, there lurks a totalitarian, the one who wants not only to behave a certain way, but damn well wants the government to make sure everybody else does too.

slavekal -> RE: Where do you fit in the political spectrum? (2/17/2010 7:08:46 PM)

Libertarian...maximum individual rights, minimal government intrusion.

littlewonder -> RE: Where do you fit in the political spectrum? (2/17/2010 8:29:07 PM)

I think I fall smack dab in the middle just like almost everything else in my life. I tend to be pretty balanced that way.

Judging from the attacks on me here what would be expected is somewhere between Facists and Nazis.

As usual with these type of tests I'm a moderate, right in the middle.

DarlingSavage -> RE: Where do you fit in the political spectrum? (2/18/2010 6:37:03 AM)

this is where I stand.

Sanity -> RE: Where do you fit in the political spectrum? (2/18/2010 6:54:01 AM)

Samboct, "philosophy" and panda are totalitarians from your side.

"philosophy" and panda go so far as advocating tortuously murdering those who dare to disagree with them, and samboct would like government control of the airwaves in order to stifle opinions differing from his own.

Who do you see as totalitarian from the Conservative side? And why.
