but I have to say that yes I am confused. You can be a great dominant guy (hi ladies, message me any time[;)]) that is a great Dom, but couldn't you also be a great dominant guy that is a terrible Dom?
What's the difference?

Now you are talking compatibility, and that is completely down to the people involved in the relationship. My "perfect" Dom would be someone else's "Meh" or "Hell, no!", and vice versa. This is the problem with asking many women what it is that women want. Doms aren't "one size fits all" and neither are subs. [;)]

bottom line, he's a great dominate if she thinks he's a great dominate

For me a great dom is a great man.  He's interested in more than just bdsm and he's interested in me.

Comfortable being himself and the ability to be consistent.
A good imagination and the ability to use that imagination.
Self confident but not too big an ego.
Honest but diplomatic.
Loving and caring and the ability for that to shine through.
Self assertive and not too weak to be alwasy making compromises.
Generous and accepting of generosity, appreciative.
Can listen as well as talk.
Adventurous and perhaps a little impulsive.
Someone who doesn't need a title or anything that would take me away from reality.
Energetic and enthusiastic.
Someone who isn't afraid to show his vulnerable side or believe its a sign of weakness to cook me a meal or stack the dishwasher on occasion.
Someone who can love me and allow me to love him back.
Inspirational and complimentary.
Competitive in life but not amongst other dominants.
Laid back, generally happy.
sporty and reasonably fit.
cultured.
Brave enough to take me on a fabulous BDSM journey without taking all of this too seriously.

I was just discribing my partner!

Ahh here we go. The Fabulous BDSM Journey. Care to go into a little more detail?

I ride a motorcycle. I am a veteran rider and have ridden all over the US. Can anyone guess what I ride? God help you if you guess wrong!

I get it, BDSM relationships are relationships first, at least here in these threads they are. But as I have found out, there is a large percentage of people that DON'T frequent the boards for whom it is all just a game (again just like regular relationships).

I guess what it boils down to is I assumed that as a member here, we all had at least one thing in common, and since we did we would all be one level deeper and be able to bypass a lot of the protocol you have to deal with in a vanilla relationship just to find out who it is you're dealing with.

What is with people wanting BDSM to be a shortcut to communication and getting to know the person?

How many different types of motorcycles are there out there?  Why do you think there isn't just one motorcycle to serve the desires of all motorcycle enthusiasts?  Why do you ride the one you ride?  Why did you PICK that particular model?  Why do you think someone might pick a completely different model?  Now tell us who you want to ride bitch in your life?  What ONE quality, do you think ALL dominant men are going to want their bitch seat riding slut to be like? Think there'll be one quality everyone agrees upon?  Are you starting to understand that BDSM is still made up of individuals with individual preferences?

We are all very special! God has blessed kinky folks! We are better than everyone else!

Do you know that I can spot your kink just walking down the street and catching a glimpse of you? My kink-dar is THAT good

Let this resonate in the community!

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: who makes a great DOM (2/12/2010 6:49:32 AM)

Just because this amused me:

Motorcycles (Dominants) have been produced in myriad configurations for innumerable purposes. Most motorcycles (Dominants) fall into one of three main categories — street (Tops), off-road (Doms), and dual-purpose (Masters)— depending on the surface (s-type) they are intended to be used on. A few specialty machines do not fall into one of these categories (Switches). Each configuration offers either specialized advantage or broad capability, and each design creates a different riding posture

The part I bolded stands out to me as problematic. I found when I was dating that lots of people know what they WISH they were but don't actually know what they ARE. I met a lot of lovely men who wanted to be confident but just weren't. They wanted to be modest but just weren't. Hell, they wanted to be 6' tall but just weren't. Their profiles all said confident, modest, 6'. Except for the height, which can be objectively measured, most characteristics are part of a continuum and it's easy to kid yourself about where on the continuum you fall.

Sure, it would be nice to bypass the bs and get down to "here's who I am" and "here's who you are." But to do that, you gotta know who you are. That's the tough part.

Hey it only took me a week and a half and I didn't get pissed off or run away. Patience (on both sides) is a virtue.
