I've noticed that whenever I take an interest in a new fetish, I will usually find it on a Japanese Fetish website.

I have a friend who has fetishes that tend to be found in the German Fetish webpages.

Can someone explain why certain cultures gravitate to particular areas of fetishes?

Its not rocket science. Culture is by definition, a group of people who have things in common.

As mentioned, cultures consist of people who have things in common. Certain cultures, for various reasons, are probably more inclined towards particular kinks. Beyond that, I really don't have much of a clue.

People tend to assimilate to the environment that they are in. Not 100%, but for the most part, people gravitate towards the norm. That said, the norm tends to differ depending on where you are.

i have traveled pretty extensively, and it is clear that the norms vary in different countries. The Japanese, for example have a very sexually open culture. There is an extensive Japanese porn industry. Porn is even a prominent subset of their anime (hentai). i have met extensively with Japanese businessmen, and their views of fidelity are very different from ours in the U.S. It was very common for me to be offered the "comforts" of a prostitute from a Japanese businessman that i had just completed a business deal with. i've experienced similar "gifts" in Hong Kong and Korea. So my assumption has always been that their sexual norms and views on prostitution and fidelity are very different from our own.

While i have done business in Germany many times, i have no experience with the sexual aspects of their culture, so i can't speak to that.

The culture in the U.S. has it's origins in very puritanical, Judeo-Christian values. We tend to be a bit uptight when it comes to things related to sex. Most Americans are amazed when they travel to Europe and see how different the commercials and TV shows are. Nudity is not as frowned upon as it is in the US. Moreover, sexuality is very open. Many commercials that can be viewed by anyone (even children) in Europe, could NEVER be aired in the U.S.

Even things like our perceptions of alcohol are different. The U.S. has a history of prohibition. Children are not allowed to drink until they reach legal "drinking age". But in Europe, children grow up drinking wine with their meals. Alcohol is not viewed as a big deal like it is here in the U.S. Once again, the cultural differences make the "norms" very different.

Views on smoking are also different. U.S. views on smoking and smokers have become almost antagonistic. But in Europe, smoking is a much more accepted thing. Smokers are everywhere, and they are not frowned upon like they are here.

These are just a few broad observations that i've made during my travels. There are lots of more specific and subtle cultural differences that i've observed (like the very strong, but hidden, sex culture in many Muslim countries). Hope that helps.

I wonder if there is a directory that lists where particular fetishes are most popular.

I knew about caning and the British and I had heard about rubber fetishes with the Germans.

But if I could find an actual list instead of just hit-and-miss searching that would be great.

Rochsub -- you are spot on with your assessment.

I'd just like to add that urban Montreal has a lot of European influences and that our way of life is very much like Europe. Also, because my father was born in Switzerland and my mother was particular fond of European ways of life, I was brought up in a very European fashion, wine with Saturday dinner as of 14, etc. In fact, in Canada, you can consume alcohol as a minor with your parents conscent, just not in a licenced establishment.

Though it doesn't particularly list fetishes by region, fetlife.com should give you some indication when you look at the demographics per fetish.

What is interesting is that Fetlife was started in Montreal where most of the BDSM culture revolves around Fetish Fashion (one of the major reasons I'm not that active in it).

It is kind of fascinating, French porn will usually be much more sensual than German porn even when they may be doing the exact same things, it's just a different ambiance.

Generally, I think Eastern European porn leans more towards rape fetish, though it's often somewhere in between French sensuality and German, uh, athleticism - Russian porn is similar, less emphasis on rape fetish, more on amateur and group sex. Japanese porn tends to be heavy on bondage, and often contains elements of humiliation, Swedish porn is mostly people fucking.

I would suspect that they don't shave below because so many Asian women don't have much to shave. So an Asian woman who has a large amount below would be unique.

I think I was Japanese in a past life. Then again, Japanese people never had a strong inculcation of sexual guilt from some ridiculous,repressive religion.

It has something to do with Japanese law, I believe, I know it was illegal to show the penis penetrating the vagina, hence manga tentacle porn.

I think they did change some of the laws recently, I'll have to look it up.

I was thinking more like the difference between Explicite and GGG type stuff - in both there is a lot of fisting, gaping anal, etc., but in the French version there is a beginning, a middle and end - an arc of sorts, you know, foreplay, a build up to the climax, and a tapering off - in the German version, they just dive in and it never stops - the men are relentless, the women insatiable.

One gets the impression that they won't stop until they collapse from exhaustion or dehydration.
