O'Neill said he tried to warn Vice President Dick Cheney that growing budget deficits-expected to top $500 billion this fiscal year alone-posed a threat to the economy. Cheney cut him off. "You know, Paul, Reagan proved deficits don't matter," he said, according to excerpts. Cheney continued: "We won the midterms (congressional elections). This is our due." A month later, Cheney told the Treasury secretary he was fired.

The fiscal shift in the Reagan years was staggering. In January 1981, when Reagan declared the federal budget to be "out of control," the deficit had reached almost $74 billion, the federal debt $930 billion. Within two years, the deficit was $208 billion. The debt by 1988 totaled $2.6 trillion. In those eight years, the United States moved from being the world's largest international creditor to the largest debtor nation.

Why conservatives idolize him will never make sense to me.

Instead, he should have watched a nation crumbling under the weight of its own economic policies and learned a few lessons.

He told people a complex world was just simple. Denial central. And then constructed policy based on the fantasy.

And when it didn't work, people wanted to do it again. Just that simple.

Reagan proclaimed that complex problems had simple answers. He was lying but gullible Americans who had rejected a POTUS telling them the truth gobbkled it up. Since him no Republican can be taken seriously by their base if he doesn't parrot that supply side nonsense. You'd think 30 years of working class folks having to struggle harder for less and less would have convinced come of them how utterly wrong they were but here we are.

I agree, it has been 30 years of conditions slowly going downhill.

The republicans love to bankrupt us because when they bankrupt us, they're only bankrupting us, not themselves. The money's just being transferred up to them. Hundreds of billions of dollars from the Bush tax cuts went straight into the pockets of millionaires. The tax cuts that have bankrupted the country were nothing more than the wealthy looting the Federal Treasury, and they gave the average American enough to buy a new TV to make them feel as though they were getting an equal share.

I favor locking them in a cell and leaving them to starve. Saves the cost of a bullet. You can cycle a new batch through every two weeks - just send them in to clean out the cell, and when it's empty, lock them inside. Repeat until you run out of thieves.
