The problem with your Roman history analysis is that WE are a Republic, NOT an Empire.  You are talking about the Roman Empire.  So you need to go back to the end of the Republic of Rome if you are going to compare the US to Rome.

And that would be 44 - 27 BC for the change period.  (There is argument about just WHEN it changed from a Republic to an Empire)

Hence my questioning of just who would be our Augustus (Octavius if you will.)

I am going to throw some red meat to the cucky/ PA wing here....

Julius Ceasar was the first Emperor, of course, the first one to seize the reins of absolute power and override the Senate, permanently.
He bacame unpopular and was assasinated.

Octavian was more shrewd, and kept he absolute powers, but he was popular and charismatic, gained the support of the Senate and people, and was able to remain in power as the first Emperor. The Republic with its system of checks and balances was lost forever.

If I were forced to make an analogy I would say Bush/ Cheney are Julius Ceasar...making Obama our Octavian.

WooooOOOOOWWWOOOOO!!!

I will admit to the Teabaggers that Obama is Octavian.....if they allow me to plunge a dagger into the dark scabbed pustule of Dick Cheney's heart.

Such a deal!

Umm. . .NO.  Julius Ceasar was a Dictator.

Octavius never took the title Emperor, instead he used Princep.  He was given the Emperor title after his death.

But Bush/Cheney cannot = Julius because they did not make themselves perpetual dictators.  The fact that they stepped down from office and someone else was elected screws up your analogy.

Does NO ONE read history books anymore?

In addition, many rant about government spending and socialization of health care, but are collecting SS and using Medicare.

why not they paid into it all their freakin lives or do you think they should just give it all to the governmentand not expect anything in return?

Maybe Roosevelt?
Obama's a pretty decent substitute for Claudius, I'd have said. ;)

Just because we install new dictators every 4 years to 8 years doesn't mean we don't live in a dictatorship. Inserting different dick (tator) doesn't mean you aren't getting fucked.
