ORIGINAL: Aylee The problem with your Roman history analysis is that WE are a Republic, NOT an Empire. You are talking about the Roman Empire. So you need to go back to the end of the Republic of Rome if you are going to compare the US to Rome. And that would be 44 - 27 BC for the change period. (There is argument about just WHEN it changed from a Republic to an Empire) Hence my questioning of just who would be our Augustus (Octavius if you will.) I am going to throw some red meat to the cucky/ PA wing here.... Julius Ceasar was the first Emperor, of course, the first one to seize the reins of absolute power and override the Senate, permanently. He bacame unpopular and was assasinated. Octavian was more shrewd, and kept he absolute powers, but he was popular and charismatic, gained the support of the Senate and people, and was able to remain in power as the first Emperor. The Republic with its system of checks and balances was lost forever. If I were forced to make an analogy I would say Bush/ Cheney are Julius Ceasar...making Obama our Octavian. WooooOOOOOWWWOOOOO!!! I will admit to the Teabaggers that Obama is Octavian.....if they allow me to plunge a dagger into the dark scabbed pustule of Dick Cheney's heart. Such a deal!
