Hot dogs are a prime offender, accounting for 17 percent of food-related asphyxiations in children under the age of 10, according to one study. "If you were to take the best engineers in the world and asked them to design a perfect plug for a child's airway, you couldn't do better than a hot dog," Smith said. "It's the right size, right shape. It's compressible so it wedges itself in. When they're in that tight [it's] almost impossible, even with the correct training and the correct equipment, to get out. When it's wedged in tightly, that child is going to die."

Makes ya wonder why it wasn't done a long time ago.

LaTigresse -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/22/2010 7:24:01 AM)

I see the point but sheesh......it's like we (general we) have to babysit people's children because some people are too fucking stupid to take proper care of their children themselves. And if they come from such stupid genes, just maybe it's the law of natural selection at work.

I suppose this stems from some lawsuit where some white trash momma handed her kid a cold hotdog and a bag of gummy fruit something or other and said "here's your lunch you little fucker, now quit your damned whining and leave momma alone!" so she could have another cold one and watch her soaps. The kid goes off to hang out with the dog chained in the back yard, the dog knocks him down and the kid chokes to death. Momma finds him 4 hours later after her 'stories' are done and she needs to head down to the local Handimart for another 12 pack and carton of cigarettes.

I am not the brightest bulb in the pack but I knew that some foods you shouldn't give a kid of a certain age. Even grapes! I suppose they are going to make grape growers genetically engineer a new grape shape too!

My mind is in the gutter today.

I want me a hot dog.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/22/2010 8:25:59 AM)

i know of a child who choked to death on a hotdog in a noisy cafeteria.  one of our administrators was working there, and he still kind of freaks on hotdog day at school....

it was a tragedy, but tragedy is part of life, and, like tigress, i tend to feel that parents could stop 99% of such tragedies.

kind of like why is there a sticker on my blow dryer telling me to not use in the shower?

sighs

Generally they say under a certain age, like 3 or 5. Seeing 10 in the article surprised me.

From 1980 to 1998 there were 1037 deaths of children under 10 years of age due to accidental suffocation in TX.  477 were white, 195 were black, 353 were hispanic, and 12 were "other".

From 1999 to 2004, there were 92 deaths of children under age 10 due to accidental obstruction of airway in TX, with 26 being white, 22, black, 42, hispanic, and 2 classified as other race.

The discrepancy is most likely due to the change in the International Classification of Disease which was implemented in 1999.

Source: www.edhp.com using vitalweb engine to determine statistics for Deaths of children under age 10 in TX by race.

In order to determine if LaT's assertions were correct, it would be necessary to do a socio-economic evaluation of child deaths due to choking.  This could be done according to area, or it could be done individually.  Since individual data is difficult to come by, i.e. very expensive, as you must sign papers stating that you're not going to disclose personal information, then there are high fees for obtaining such data.  Aggregated data could be mapped, then analyze socio-economic factors of mapped areas, cultural factors, so on and so forth.  A map could be drawn up showing the spatial variation of death of children under age 10.  Yeah.

edited to correct statistice to statistics - I hate that!

Wow!

It's what I do.

We might also consider looking at deaths of children under age 10 due to abandonment and neglect and see if there is a correlation between the two.

Docs Urge Choking Warnings On Gum, Hot Dogs

American Academy Of Pediatrics Calls For Sweeping Changes

LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer
POSTED: 5:22 pm EST February 21, 2010
UPDATED: 6:00 am EST February 22, 2010

CHICAGO -- When 4-year-old Eric Stavros Adler choked to death on a piece of hot dog, his anguished mother never dreamed that the popular kids' food could be so dangerous.
Some food makers including Oscar Mayer have warning labels about choking, but not nearly enough, says Joan Stavros Adler, Eric's mom.

Choking kills more than 100 U.S. children 14 years or younger each year and thousands more -- 15,000 in 2001 -- are treated in emergency rooms. Food, including candy and gum, is among the leading culprits, along with items like coins and balloons. Of the 141 choking deaths in kids in 2006, 61 were food-related.

------

From the op's article.

"Hot dogs are a prime offender, accounting for 17 percent of food-related asphyxiations in children under the age of 10, according to one study."

----

So in 2006 there were 141 choking deaths of which 61 were food related and out of those only 17% can be blamed on the deadly hot dog. 6.5 deaths a year.

Poor little 4-year-old Eric Stavros Adler. He achieved what everyone else thought was impossible. I have called my alderman to suggest that we immediately erect a statue in this kids honor. He should be famous!!! People should be aware of this monumental task!!!

All of us in Chicago are so proud of this little fucker. He soared so far above expectations. While most people can only dream of choking to death on a hotdog Eric turned his dreams into reality.

All of Chicago has never been so proud.

You have a better chance of having your ass shot up into space than you do of choking to death on a hotdog.

Way to go Eric!!!

In other words, don't talk with your mouth full!

Missokyst -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/22/2010 11:57:10 AM)

Did you ever wonder how we all survived? Hotdogs, hard candies, skateboarding on asphalt, sommersaults on blacktop, hanging from the monkeybars while dangling over concrete, jump ropes, jaks, pickup sticks, weebles that could fit in the mouth, and don't get me started on Lego's...

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/22/2010 12:08:02 PM)

not to mention being told to "get out of my hair and go play outside!" And yet we made it safely (or not so much) into adulthood.

Go figure....

You're so right!  Now it seems like we want to put them in padded rooms and never let them out.  I'm reminded of that old SNL skit when Dan Aykroyd was being interviewed by Jane Curtain as the owner of a toy manufacturer that made such toys as "Big Bag of Glass".  [sm=biggrin.gif]

Also, don't forget we did all that stuff without kneepads, elbowpads, or helmets!  We rock!

I have fell out of trees, climbed 3 stories to the roof, jumped off into the pool twice. I know I did shit when I was young. But I was careful with my risks. Hell we lived outside.

Smutmonger -> RE: redesigning the shape of hotdogs... (2/22/2010 11:03:43 PM)

My ma warned me about shit like this by telling me to "go play in traffic". I come from a long line of sadists-Dad and Grandpa were dentists.

So I got clued to darwin at a pretty early age.

LaTigresse, why are you bring RACE into this, it is a case of poor parenting not race. I do agree with the rest that we have to be responsible for ourselves and our families and keep the goverment and the do gooder people out of these things. Be responsible adults and watch your children.
