It is still going, I don't read it much

Born and raised on the southside. Moved to Michigan a few years back, and can honestly say the biggest thing I miss about home are the food joints.

Anyways, when I lived with my dad the only paper allowed in the house was the Sun Times, because of the way the Tribune screwed over the unions. I suppose you may be right about the real differences being in the editorial pages, but after traveling a bit I started to pick up on subtle nuances in the way the Times covered the same exact story. Much like the way posters around here (including myself) do, even if it wasn't intentional there was a bit of spin added. Some of that seemed to change right around the time Daley moved north of Madison...

That is one of the reasons I read both papers. I want to be informed. not converted...:)

Papers have a problem when they do well, too.

The New York Times web site, for free, for example, is a far superior product to its print version. I used to read the Sunday Times every week, but when it hit $5, I passed.

Now I read online.

Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert.

I wish I could say that was a joke.

I buy the N.Y. Times in my local N.C. Starbucks every day(along with my overpriced cappucino)well the Sunday edition now costs $6.....some sundays happen to be busier than others.....if I have to hang on to that damm edition till thursday...you can bet your ass I'm going to get around to reading every section that interests me......no  fish  wrapping for that bad boy,not till friday at the least.

Print media has been in decline for decades.  One reason is that the online equivalent is free and IMO easier to read.  Another is that good journalists - those who think about what they're being told, and look at it critically - are a dying breed.  Much easier and cheaper to simply take the WH's statements and run with them.

I'm fine with print media declining.  I feel that the product delivered has gotten worse while their competition got fiercer.  Even with years to see and experience these trends, they did nothing to counter, instead cutting costs by reducing quality.  Time for a lesson in free markets.

The medium is the message (or massage for the in crowd), is why. Not as hot as Fox News.

I'd feel a lot more sympathy about this if most newspapers weren't written in such a condescending and patronising manner. The bloody red tops over here are worse than the television news in most cases. A lot of the time the same people are running both in any case.

You realise that only a tiny handful of posters here know what the expression 'red tops' means, right  ? (And why doesn't the Daily Mail have a red top? Talk of camouflage!)

I was forgetting that, kittin.

Crib notes for transatlantic readers: the UK is noted for a swarm of shitty lowest common denominator papers aimed at a rather patronising university graduate conception of the working class. One term for these tabloids (they were invariably printed in the tabloid format, rather than as a broadsheet, which was often seen as further evidence that they aren't a proper paper like the Times or the Grauniad) is "red tops" as they tended to have the title set in red on the front page. Noted examples of red tops: the sun, the Star*, the Mirror, The News Of The World, The Sunday/Daily Sport, most local papers. They're noted for a right leaning stance (the Mirror is probably the newspaper of a lot of neocons on here's dreams) and a staggering degree of intolerance directed at anybody they think their readers won't like the look of. Look them up on wikipedia and you'll see why I don't think papers like that losing sales is anything to get upset over.

*(Not the Evening Star, which is a rare example of a Marxist paper, or a concept album by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. It depends who you ask...)

I read both papers here every day. The Sun-Times, and the Tribune.

Other than the editorial pages, I find the coverage remarkably balanced.
Jeff

The Tribune is a communist paper, any paper you have to unfold 4 times, and is very hard to read on the toilet, is a communist paper. Give me the Sun Times tabloid layout anyday

To respond to the title of the thread, I suspect that the "tanking" of news papers probably has a lot more to do with the internet. It's hard to compete with free.

Funny you should mention that. The twat Murdoch has been cutting the amount of free material on his papers' websites and laying the groundwork for a pay per view system, I believe.

Hold on a mo'... when did the Mirror turn its coat?!!! It used to be pro-Labour, at least before I left England (2001). I realise that Labour became Conservative Lite a while ago (1997), but still, the fact remains... Robert Maxwell was a self-confessed Commie. When did the Daily Mirror become a right-wing rag?

Fucking hell  .

Robert Maxwell drowned a few years back, remember?
The Mirror's an interesting case because it's always been (as you say) a labour paper, but it's always leaned as far to the right socially as any of the other red tops.

Let him.  I'd be surprised to see if he makes any progress whatsoever.  Kinda funny to watch a billionaire waste his money trying to make free news content a paid-for commodity.

I can't see it doing him any good either.
