What can I expect from munches? How do they work and what do people while there? Is there any other alternatives when it comes to meeting people interested in bdsm-relationships? I'm not very keen on going to one of those play clubs, I'm looking for something more long-term but what do I know? I never visited one so please help me.

Status: offline 		A munch is a social meeting, usually held in a public restaurant.   A munch is for people to get to know other people.  So, basically it's a group of people having lunch or dinner together, chatting about mostly vanilla things due to the fact that others might overhear conversations.  People are asked to not wear fetish clothing as a munch does not wish to draw attention to it.  Sometimes munches are lucky enough to be able to meet in a back room of a restaurant.  In that case some of the chatting could be about scene things. 

A coffee is similar to a munch in that people meet in public.  However, it's not usually for a meal.  In our town we have coffees at a local grocery store that has a deli area with table and chairs.  At 7 pm on a week night no one is using that area so we get together just to enjoy each other's company. 

Munches are good for meeting people.  Many cities and towns where munches meet do not have clubs.  At a munch you make friends.  You might be invited to a demonstration in someone's home some day.  It's a good way to learn new techniques.

Status: offline 		In My experience, you can expect two things.  Food and people who happen to be kinky that are eating that food.  Many munches are held in vanilla locations and quite a number of groups will ask that the fetish wear be left at home.  It's really nothing more than a group of people who have a common interest (BDSM) getting together for dinner.

Status: offline 		i agree with Madame4a.  Do a search on this board, and you will find dozens of threads about munches.

But just to get you started, here are a few suggestions:

1) Make sure you show up at the munch completely naked.  Get undressed in your car and make sure you are already naked when you enter the venue.  You wouldn't want to be perceived as being "too vanilla".  After all, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

2) When you get to the munch, quickly ascertain who the other subs are.  Once you've done that, go around the room and smack each of them.  That will quickly establish you as the alpha dog among the subs.

3) Introduce yourself to all of the Dommes and make sure you get each of their e-mail addresses.  Then after the munch, go home and e-mail each of them a picture of your penis.  That way, they'll be sure to remember you.

Good luck at the munch.  If you take my advice, it is sure to be a memorable event for you.

Status: offline 		Munches are just meeting for a meal with a group of people who share an interest in bdsm. Can be fun or dull depending on the people, just like regular meetings.

But, I would not dismiss parties out of hand. They are good places to socialise, meet people who know other kinky people and might help you connect, you can observe the sorts of things that people do, without committing to doing it yourself.

Most of the time I just hang out in the social only area, rather than engaging in play.

Status: offline 		it is a great way to meet others who are in the lifestyle in a casual place some have play partys after that can be just attended and not have to play can be a great way to see some types of play as well as meeting others demos are good to learn more on a paticular subject

Status: offline 		I see your from London and so have put down some of your local munch groups. Also use informedconsent.co.uk as that is very much up to date in what is going on and you get to know the people in the forums that your likely to meet at the munch. The West London munch and the Putney munch are two I would highly recommend. West London have workshops. Putney is strictly vanilla and a really nice bunch of people.
In the UK we tend not to do the meal but have a social drink with some like minded people. If you get to know people on the forums then they will normally look out for you if your new and look after you for the evening.

Status: offline 		Munches vary, some are very poly, others are largely couples, some are very low key and discreet, others aren't, some are full of idiots, others less so, some are full of  your kind of idiots, others less so.

There used to be a munch so close I could walk from my old house...I only went once, there was another one over an hour a way, I made it all the time. 

Just work on the Goldilocks Principle...try them, some will be a better fit than others.
