TheHeretic -> No news is interesting news. (2/26/2010 6:16:59 PM)

I didn't have the opportunity to watch President Obama's "summit" yesterday.  It's a 'work for a living" thing.  The total lack of coverage I've noted today, not to mention the absence of at least four threads started by our resident spamboy on the subject tells me quite a bit though.

When the Pres. had his Q&A session with the Republicans, and did well with it, that was a dominant story and talk topic for days.  That this is receiving no coverage and analysis in the mainstream sources I tend to check in with during the day states pretty clearly that the President didn't come out of there looking so statesmanlike.  It might even be the case that the Republicans made him look like something else.

Anybody have Youtube of just the good bits?

NPR did an hour summary of it later that same day.

I didn't catch it, but it's there if you like.

I get pretty tired of the "Nobody covered this" repetitive chant.

It's always readily available. Maybe not squeezed in between beer commercials.

Mucho coverage in today's New York Times.....including 2 op-ed pieces one from a conservative pov...the other one from the more enlightened(just kidding [8|]) liberal viewpoint.

I watched most of this summit as I have a lot of free time. Watching paint dry would have been more interesting. It was clear from the get go that nothing would be accomplished. Obama summed it up nicely though. The democrats will ram this bill through and the voters will sort it out in the coming mid term elections. I wouldn't want to be a democrat who has to explain this boon doggle this November.

Well, the GOP didn't drool, or blurt out N***er, so they got that going for them.

The reactions were here, here, and here,

Although the funniest reaction was from Dana Milbank:
"Republicans had been hesitant to accept President Obama's invitation to participate in Thursday's White House health-care summit. Their hesitance turned out to be justified.

An equal number of Democratic and Republican lawmakers assembled around a table at Blair House, and each had a chance to speak during the seven-hour televised talkathon. But members of the opposition party may not have fully understood that they were stepping into Prof. Obama's classroom, and that they were to be treated like his undisciplined pupils.

Obama controlled the microphone and the clock, and he used both skillfully to limit the Republicans' time, to rebut their arguments and to always have the last word.

Among the first to have his knuckles rapped was Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). The 2008 Republican presidential nominee accused his former rival of "unsavory" dealmaking, of breaking his promise to put health-care negotiations on C-SPAN, of supporting a 2,400-page bill, of giving favors to lobbyists and special interests. He directed Obama to "go back to the beginning" with health-care reform.

"Let me just make this point, John," the president said when the tirade ended. "We're not campaigning anymore. The election's over." Teacher directed student to drop the "talking points" and "focus on the issues of how we actually get a bill done."

Pretty much all commenters agreed that Obama allowed the Repubs to have their say, but the takeaway is that the Dems are going to have to go it alone; there are no, and will never be any, Republican votes for any sort of health care reform, no how, no way.

Unless by "health care reform" you mean grinding up poor people to make sausage.

The dems will indeed have to go it alone. I personally don't think that they now have even 51 votes for the so called nuclear option. They are running scared. They scored no points in that waste of time summit..

There was an NPR discussion about whether this means the Dems can strengthen the bill without the need to placate Republicans, or whether their caucus is just too far apart on the wings to get a consensus. And whether this is good or bad come November.

I don't think anyone really knows. I'll be interested to see if the Dems have found the balls to follow through.

If the polls really did show that the public supported a government takeover of our health care system it would be voted for by the dems. That is not the case..

It's interesting. As a package, they're wary of the bill. But point by point, they favor it.

We live in a strange country.

A government takeover of the health care system is wildly unpopular with Americans. A public option, however is very popular.

So the Dems need to institute a public option, while avoiding a government takeover. Simple, really.

Could the hardline Republican stance actually help the Dems find their balls MM?.....Could silly little Republican obstructionist antics might actually help in passing of a meaningful health care reform?

Well then, judging by the President's approval ratings, and those of Congress, that won't work out very well for them.  I guess now we get to see if Ron was right was about the Dems not having the balls to do anything at all.

servantforuse -> RE: No news is interesting news. (2/26/2010 7:36:35 PM)

The public option will put private insurance companies out of business. There will be no other 'option' except to rely on the federal government..

That proves government is the most efficient and by the laws of the Free Market (pause to genuflect) the private insurers should fail.

Musicmystery -> RE: No news is interesting news. (2/26/2010 7:39:06 PM)

And that's a measure of how so not good a job they're doing.

Servant,I do believe what Animus and MM just did is know as "hoisting one on his own petard"[:)]
