It definitely would have hurt, but I sometimes wonder if it would have been better than the temporary artificially inflated fix that TARP represents. We will never know.

I'm just here to admire what Brain has done to that Beatles song. Oh, and maybe occupation would be a better goal than employment since jobs are scarce. But I'm enjoying the entertainment on this thread, I must admit.

Oh they do. But it costs them to strike. And they are paid an outrageous ten to fifteen times less than their bosses. Many workers are on 20-30,0000 max while bosses who do the least amount of work are on upwards from 300,000 dollars up to 3 million dollars Now tell me where is the fairness in that? Plus who loses their jobs at the end of it all and who gets the better pay offs. Not the workers that is for sure Kevin

Sadly Unions dont have much pull. They do everything for employees and yet do nothing in substantial terms for them. Why has the gap between the rich and poor got wider? Because management powers have got unjustifiably stronger. There is less security. Workers rights are getting eroded by the year. We live in a very Thatcherite world sadly. It started with that intolerant English Woman and has continued ever since to the point where the gap between what managers earn at the top and what employees earn at the bottom is wider now than it ever was. Employees at the bottom are in fact inflation considerations taken into account earning less than they were five years ago. While management at the top is earning much more Kevin

Existing by unemployment insurance, food stamps, etc is not living beyond your means it is bare bones survival. While management at the top is earning much more Kevin You're quite right in the sense that the unions (and other working class institutions) were deliberately smashed in England - though you're wide of the mark in terms of the reason underpinning this - it was an attempt to move England toward a more individualistic society and the belief was that it would move England toward a more prosperous society (at the time Britain was known as 'the sick man of Europe'). Whether or not you agree with the logic is another matter but it certainly wasn't an attempt to rob the poor to feed the rich. During the mid '80s - when the unions had a measure of power - they basically shat on their own. When the miners went on strike (for very good reasons) other unions did not support them - they just left them to sink or swim. And the media was full of stories of high ranking union reps embezzling funds and even striking secret deals with Russia of all places - and of course people believed it - in every opinion poll taken during the miners strike the public had more sympathy for the government than the miners. I was growing up in Durham during this strike - where the vast majority of the community were miners and out on strike for 12-18 months with no income whatsoever and families to feed - and the other unions (who the miners needed to strike to have any sort of chance of having their concerns addressed) just left them to it - I suppose out of self-preservation - that's workers solidarity for you eh - eating your own no less! So - someone like me (who is a manager) and does have some sympathy for worker's rights due to liberal politics but has seen close up how the unions shit on their own when push comes to shove - would pretty much say you had your chance and duffed it so you're on your own. Too late now - the opportunity for worker's solidarity was the mid 1980s - society has moved on and I'd say taken a decisive and irreversible step away from union power.

It certainly appears that way. It has made for a much less equal society not saying that society was more equal before the miners were crushed in the mid 80s but it s certainly far less equal now Kevin
