In what way?  He's increased the troop level in Afghanistan.  .

I think that with the dying of the manufacturing base and the loss of real jobs, middle America has awakened to the fact that they have been used, lied to, and looked down upon by a party of 'elites' who are interested in pure Marxist idiology that would have government control every facet of our lives

The banking system that screwed us over and used fraud to create unusable assets, and got bailed out by TARP is a bunch of Marxists?  I thought they were capitalists that used the system.

The rest of your post is too disjointed for me.

Not gonna get into the pros or cons of changing the policy on the nuke shield, but that could be argued to be one of the ways he is seeking to take the teeth out of our defense. I give him all the credit in the world for following at least in part his generals request for the new surge, one of the decisions that I am proud of our president for.

True capitalists would have let the floundering fail or succeed on their own merits, which leads me to believe that there aren't many left. It definitely would have hurt, but I sometimes wonder if it would have been better than the temporary artificially inflated fix that TARP represents. We will never know.

COO COO CA CHEW COO COO
I Am the Walrus

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I'm crying.

Sitting on a bench, waiting for the bus to come.
Corporation t-shirts, stupid bloody Tuesday.
You've been a naughty boy, you let your hair grow long.
I am eatting eggs, they are eatting eggs, I'm John Lennon,
Goo goo ga joob.

Mister City P'liceman sitting
Pretty little girls in a row.
See how they fly like a plane in the Sky, see how they fly.
I'm crying.
I'm cry, I'm crying, I'm cry.

Yellow custard, dripping from a large black pot.
Fisherman with his fishwife,
You've been a naughty boy and you let your face get dirty.
I am eatting eggs (woo), they are eatting eggs (woo), I am John Lennon,
Goo goo ga joob.

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don't come, you get wet from
Sitting in the English rain.
I am eatting eggs, they are eatting eggs, I am John Lennon,
goo goo gajoob ga goo goo gajoob.

Expert singers, choking smokers
Don't you think the joker laughs at you? (ho ho ho, he he he, ha ha ha)
See how they snort like pigs in a sty, see how they snide.
I'm crying.

Eleanor Rigby, climbing up the stairs.
Expert singers singing Hare Krishna.
Man, you should have seen them reading Edgar Allan Poe.
I am eatting eggs, they are eatting eggs, I John Lennon,
Goo goo gajoob ga goo goo ga joob
(everybody ho ha everybody ho ha!)

I'm just here to admire what Brain has done to that Beatles song.

Oh, and maybe occupation would be a better goal than employment since jobs are scarce.

But I'm enjoying the entertainment on this thread, I must admit.

The average worker is blameless. The unemployed are blameless. The bosses in banks are to blame, the speculators are to blame. Fully

Which suggests that people/workers are powerless....which of course isn't correct......people/workers have chosen to abdicate their responsiiblities/power/choice....and as such must take a share of the blame.

lobodomslavery -> RE: Lone senator blocks unemployment benefit extensions (2/28/2010 3:58:27 AM)

The average worker IS powerless. He is not the mover or shaker. She is not the mover or shaker. They are totally at the mercy of a boss who can render both unemployed through sheer greed or whim at any moment. If people have power why are so many being laid off with little explanation. People are POWERLESS
Kevin

Why don't they band together as a collective body and make certain demands?

lobodomslavery -> RE: Lone senator blocks unemployment benefit extensions (2/28/2010 7:08:40 AM)

Oh they do. But it costs them to strike. And they are paid an outrageous ten to fifteen times less than their bosses. Many workers are on 20-30,0000 max while bosses who do the least amount of work are on upwards from 300,000 dollars up to 3 million dollars
Now tell me where is the fairness in that? Plus who loses their jobs at the end of it all and who gets the better pay offs. Not the workers that is for sure

No! Can't have that! That would be - gasp - UNIONS! Worse - Labor Unions! The arch evil! Average workers must never be allowed to band together as a collective body!

Hasn't that been the mantra for the last 50 years or so?

lobodomslavery -> RE: Lone senator blocks unemployment benefit extensions (2/28/2010 10:50:31 AM)

Unions are the best thing that humanity has produced. Without unions we would be living in a total dictatorship. Employers could do as they wanted completely. It would be hell
Kevin

lobodomslavery -> RE: Lone senator blocks unemployment benefit extensions (2/28/2010 10:54:47 AM)

Sadly Unions dont have much pull. They do everything for employees and yet do nothing in substantial terms for them. Why has the gap between the rich and poor got wider? Because management powers have got unjustifiably stronger. There is less security. Workers rights are getting eroded by the year. We live in a very Thatcherite world sadly. It started with that intolerant English Woman and has continued ever since to the point where the gap between what managers earn at the top and what employees earn at the bottom is wider now than it ever was. Employees at the bottom are in fact inflation considerations taken into account earning less than they were five years ago. While management at the top is earning much more

Depending on the job you lost, 10 an hour wouldn't cut it, and yes, you could easily make more than 10 an hour on unemployment if your job was well paying enough, and you would be stupid to take a job that paid less than unemployment

It is NOT the job of people in Iowa to pay for the extended benefits for unemployed people in New York!....let New York pay for New York...its that dam simple....I don't owe them a dam thing, yet I get the bill?...right!...dream on lib....

Funny, New York pays more money in taxes than they receive... so no, you are not paying for their unemployment....I could not find the data for Iowa, but most states get more from the government than they actually pay in, and most of those states are red states...or as I like to call them, welfare states

Existing by unemployment insurance, food stamps, etc is not living beyond your means it is bare bones survival. This recession is not improving quickly and the areas that are improving are uneven.

How about this guy looses his job, home, family and mind?
Maybe then he will have some compassion and empathy.

How about we create some real jobs here in the U.S. instead of letting people continue to suck on the government tit.

How many extensions is enough?

You're quite right in the sense that the unions (and other working class institutions) were deliberately smashed in England - though you're wide of the mark in terms of the reason underpinning this - it was an attempt to move England toward a more individualistic society and the belief was that it would move England toward a more prosperous society (at the time Britain was known as 'the sick man of Europe'). Whether or not you agree with the logic is another matter but it certainly wasn't an attempt to rob the poor to feed the rich.

During the mid '80s - when the unions had a measure of power - they basically shat on their own. When the miners went on strike (for very good reasons) other unions did not support them - they just left them to sink or swim. And the media was full of stories of high ranking union reps embezzling funds and even striking secret deals with Russia of all places - and of course people believed it - in every opinion poll taken during the miners strike the public had more sympathy for the government than the miners. I was growing up in Durham during this strike - where the vast majority of the community were miners and out on strike for 12-18 months with no income whatsoever and families to feed - and the other unions (who the miners needed to strike to have any sort of chance of having their concerns addressed) just left them to it - I suppose out of self-preservation - that's workers solidarity for you eh - eating your own no less!

So - someone like me (who is a manager) and does have some sympathy for worker's rights due to liberal politics but has seen close up how the unions shit on their own when push comes to shove - would pretty much say you had your chance and duffed it so you're on your own. Too late now - the opportunity for worker's solidarity was the mid 1980s - society has moved on and I'd say taken a decisive and irreversible step away from union power.

lobodomslavery -> RE: Lone senator blocks unemployment benefit extensions (3/1/2010 2:06:55 AM)

It certainly appears that way. It has made for a much less equal society not saying that society was more equal before the miners were crushed in the mid 80s but it s certainly far less equal now
Kevin
