winterlight -> Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/26/2010 11:54:02 PM)

It is 30 times greater than Haiti's....For both places my prayers are with them..

WyldHrt -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 12:02:46 AM)

I just saw that a 6.9 earthquake hit Okinawa yesterday morning, and the Ryukyu Islands had a 7.2 as well. WTF is it, earthquake season?

http://roadrunner.com/news/topic/article/rr/9000/10502063/USGS_reports_83-magnitude_earthquake_hits_Chile

They are covering it now on Fox News. There are fires, but they don't expect it to be as bad as Haiti because of better structure. They were worried about a tsunami but someone (sorry, I didn't catch who said it) that it wasn't a worry now. There are poorer area's and they feel it could be pretty bad in those area's.

The USGS says the quake generated tsunami that may have been destructive. (I think it is too soon to know what is what.)

ShaharThorne -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 12:35:19 AM)

Yahoo is stating that it is an 8.8 earthquake now.  Will catch up later when I get more sleep (I need a dvr I swear...).

The Pacific plates must be shifting.

KMsAngel -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 6:38:00 AM)

pahunkboy -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 6:51:17 AM)

shouldn't we tho be more worried about h1n1?

Louve00 -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 6:53:51 AM)

I just heard on the news that a tsunami is expected to hit at around 11:30am in Hawaii (not sure if that was eastern time where they were telling the story or hawaii time which is a 6 hr time difference from the east coast).  The news said when Chile had an earthquake in the 60's, a tsunami hit the southern region of Hawaii (Hilo was the worst hit).  They say this tsunami is expected to hit the entire state.

What the news said (NBC news) was they are telling tourists on the island of Waikiki (one of their most northern islands) to head to up the third floors and higher of their motels.  Now...I'm going to post a link to a hypothetical situation of an earthquake in Monaloa [sp] Hawaii, that hits Honolulu.  Doesn't look to me like third floor or any floor higher would be anyone's salvation.

hejira92 -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 7:26:48 AM)

My son (stationed in Hawaii- it's about 4am there) just called to tell me about the expected tsunami. He doesn't think they will be able to evacuate the base on a Saturday morning. He has been told to stay in his room- on the third floor.

It is supposed to hit 11:19 local time (4:19 pm EST).

Yes, I'm scared sh*tless.

Don't be such an ass. Chile isn't Haiti.

From the NY Times:

The White House said Saturday morning that it was closely monitoring the situation, “including the potential for a tsunami,” said White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, including the potential for a tsunami. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Chile, and we stand ready to help in this hour of need.”

A Department of Homeland Security official said early Saturday that FEMA was monitoring the situation and was in contact with state emergency personnel in Hawaii, which is under a tsunami warning. But the decision to evacuate coastal areas and handling this evacuation is the responsibility of state and local officials in Hawaii, the Homeland Security official said.

Here's a link to a map from the USGS.  The original 8.8 is pretty well covered by the aftershocks, but it provides an interesting perspective on what happened, and is still happening.

Louve00 -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 8:35:28 AM)

Using that little link you pasted above was fun panning up and down all over the pacific from where the earthquake it in Chile.  I know one thing.  Hawaii sits out in the pacific as isolated as isolated can be...and as small as small can be, too.  I'd be a nervous wreck wondering what would happen.  In fact....I think I would adopt the mentality I had when I watched Katrina making its way to NOLA.  I'd be booking a flight outa there.....QUICK!!!

mnottertail -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 8:36:46 AM)

well, in the 60's a chilean earthquake caused tsunamis in hawaii and california. I wonder what preparations we are making or able to make?

Thadius -> RE: Chile hit with a 8.3 earthquake an hour ago (2/27/2010 8:45:15 AM)

They will be making a decision about airport closings shortly. Here is the latest from Hawaii Tsunami warning center.

EVALUATION

A TSUNAMI HAS BEEN GENERATED THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE ALONG
COASTLINES OF ALL ISLANDS IN THE STATE OF HAWAII. URGENT ACTION
SHOULD BE TAKEN TO PROTECT LIVES AND PROPERTY.

A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF LONG OCEAN WAVES. EACH INDIVIDUAL WAVE
CREST CAN LAST 5 TO 15 MINUTES OR MORE AND EXTENSIVELY FLOOD
COASTAL AREAS. THE DANGER CAN CONTINUE FOR MANY HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE AS SUBSEQUENT WAVES ARRIVE. TSUNAMI WAVE HEIGHTS
CANNOT BE PREDICTED AND THE FIRST WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST.
TSUNAMI WAVES EFFICIENTLY WRAP AROUND ISLANDS. ALL SHORES ARE AT
RISK NO MATTER WHICH DIRECTION THEY FACE. THE TROUGH OF A TSUNAMI
WAVE MAY TEMPORARILY EXPOSE THE SEAFLOOR BUT THE AREA WILL
QUICKLY FLOOD AGAIN. EXTREMELY STRONG AND UNUSUAL NEARSHORE
CURRENTS CAN ACCOMPANY A TSUNAMI. DEBRIS PICKED UP AND CARRIED
BY A TSUNAMI AMPLIFIES ITS DESTRUCTIVE POWER. SIMULTANEOUS HIGH
TIDES OR HIGH SURF CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE TSUNAMI HAZARD.

THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME IN HAWAII OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS

1119 AM HST SAT 27 FEB 2010

FORECAST WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AND AMPLITUDES CREST TO TROUGH.

HILO 1105AM HST 2.5 METERS
HONOLULU 1137AM HST 0.5 METERS
KAHULUI 1126AM HST 2.2 METERS
NAWILIWILI 1142AM HST 0.9 METERS
HALEIWA 0.5 METERS
KAWAIHAE 0.6 METERS

THESE ARE ONLY ESTIMATES...ACTUAL VALUES MAY DIFFER.

MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

Those islands are soooo tiny though.  And as Thadius said, they'll be closing the airports soon.  I'd be looking (almost in a panic) to fly my ass outta there.  Thats how I'd prepare lol.
