I'm watching CNN... 17.7 ft tsunami hit parts of Chile already and a tsunami warning has been issued for the entire pacific basin.

Aloha. Dragon here on Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island. The Tsunami here was basically a non-event, as in very little surge, and no damage that I have heard of. I went out with my skipper this morning from Kawaihae Harbor on his 36' sailboat, so as to get away from any major surges. By 11 am when the waves were scheduled to hit, we were 3 miles or so off shore. By 2 pm, we were back in the harbor, it was still surging about 12-18 inches, but no problems anywhere.

It was a good drill however, and we had plenty of time to prepare. Essentially all coastal areas were evacuated, sirens were sounding all morning on the hour, planes and helecopters were flying along the coast, etc. One am radio station on Oahu kept broadcasting news etc, and actually got a little frustrated that there was so little to report. The worst that could happen is that people would ignore the next Tsunami warning, which could devistate areas. One in 1960 nearly wiped out Hilo, down on the other side of this island.

And to whoever wrote it, Waikiki is not an island, it is the best known beach on Oahu, where Honolulu is.

Thanks both ... it was a brief chat, but good news.

My thoughts are with them ... and also with those facing the waves and/or aftershock.

And glad for you, too, JonnieBoy!!  Water, electric and phone, too!!  I've been reading that Chile was probably one of the most prepared cities for a quake of that magnitude.  They proved themselves right.

Hopefully you'll contact your friend from down there soon, kittyboy.  [sm=smile.gif]

That is just awful. Natural disasters leave us feeling so helpless.

I am relieved to hear all the Tsunami warnings have been cancelled. One was set for Vancouver as well.

"Chile quake may have shifted Earth's axis":

quote:

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
