This came up elsewhere and deserves its own thread.

I'm always amazed that people will vote against their own best interests.

from The Tax Foundation:
http://www.taxfoundation.org/press/show/22659.html

33 states and the District of Columbia get back more Federal tax dollars than they pay in. Ironically, considering the Republican Party champions low taxes and cutting Federal taxes, 21 of the 33 states who get back more than the taxpayers in those states pay in are also states who voted for John McCain in 2008. In effect, the wealthier Blue states are subsidizing poorer, more rural Red states...much as urban counties usually subsidize rural counties on the state tax level albeit the red-leaning suburbs of urban areas subsidize the dark blue super-urban inner cities of metropolitan areas. The blue city propers typically are net receivers of federal funds.

States with large military or Federal labs (typically in the South and West) appear to get more in Federal dollars. Large urban areas receive substantially more federal funds in the form of social welfare spending, as do minority-heavy rural areas particularly in the South. Large, urban states pay more in than they get back although it's unclear whether the larger outlow derives from red- or blue-minded taxpayers in those urban blue states (e.g. Wall Street in NY).

well that sucks.

PA only gets $1.07 back.    and that is in inflated money which buys less then the money we sent in!

what a scam.

razzle dazzle -  keynes was a fraud.

Geez, you're getting a 7% return...and while inflation is almost flat.

Keynes was fine---just nobody ever wants to contract the economy during good times, so we expand expand expand, spending and tax cuts.

And the spending moves around, vs. vanishing.

Hey Tim,

I didn't get a chance to look at the link, cool find. What year is the data from? I find it hard to believe that Michigan (the state I live in) is paying more than we are receiving. Could just be a perception thing, or perhaps some of those grandious bailouts and company purchases aren't figured into the numbers?

At least you are not getting fucked like we are out here in Ca. .78 cents on a buck. I guess it is better than Nv.

Hi Thadius,

The study is 2007, the data are 2005.

There's more recent stuff on the site, including 2009, but that's the most recent full state table I could find quickly.

When you get a chance, poke around and post what you find! Or perhaps someone can find a more recent study from another (credible) site.

Live well,

Taxable Tim

Hmm...so John Galt is actually a gay black man in San Francisco, subsidizing shiftless Bubba in Dixie.

Someone alert the Teabaggers.

http://www.shadowstats.com/article/hyperinflation    we could throw in unfunded mandates- which then shifts costs onto states and counties.

While 107% sounds good-

1. the govt lies about everything.
2. the shifting of various costs must be taken into account.

from the link ->
Loss of U.S. Dollar Purchasing Power through March 2008
  —-Since January of —- Versus: 1914 1933 1970 Swiss franc -80.4% -80.4% -76.5% CPI-U -95.1% -94.0% -82.3% Gold -97.9% -97.9% -93.4% SGS-Alternate CPI -98.2% -97.8% -93.6%/snip

and I wont say there is deflation- because my next trip on i80 will cost me more money due to tolls going up-  this is before they even make PA a toll road.   I mean OH- IN- IL- increased tolls from 12-08 my last trip.

This is from the Tax Foundation, not the Feds.

Just the same, the spending goes somewhere, you know--it doesn't just evaporate.

I've lived in four--NY, Mass., VT, and NJ.

I liked the arts in Boston, I liked the mountains in VT, and I liked being near but not living in NYC when in NJ. But I love NY, especially the Adirondacks and the central rural region.

Upstate NY is pretty.

I would like to stay in my same area when I move- but prices are creeping up- the northern tier of PA is pretty- I thought of maybe going western PA.  I will always have ties to Chicago- if I move abit west- it would shave off up to 4 hours of a drive.

As to state government- IL is dismal.   I don't know alot about other states.   I do know that PA ranks pretty high for a retired person.   Only FL has more retired per capita.

As we go forward-  IMO- it is to ones advantage to know the turf.  So where I know how and what things work- will flow better for me - then re-learning a new environ.

It can be hard to hit the right balance of rural + conveniences.  While I would like to be more rural- I am not wanting to be cutting firewood.

Well, this is probably a little too rural for you then!

But it is beautiful and peaceful.

I remember Michael Moore going to Newt Gingrinch asking him to send back all that Federal money sent to his home district -- which got quite a bit.
