Meanwhile Scotland was united willingly (or not so willingly, they were bankrupt) with England and had a developed legal system at the time so kept it.

<sputters>willingly?!?

Let's just suffice it to say that the Scots have a different view of the formation of the United Kingdom. One that involves English treachery, slaughter and theft of innocent stones.

Are we forgetting the whole lowland/highland split here ? Do you really think there were no Scottish clans who willingly joined the English ?

I am a Campbell by heritage.  Campbell of Breadalbyne.. yanno.. we're the ones that slaughtered the MacDonalds at the behest of the King.

Last time I looked, Wales and England had the same government, laws, money, language etc. Or does being part of the same country not matter?

That is truly an American Melting Pot way of way of seeing things. Some societies are distinct within larger societal structures, regardless of what political or economical structures they might share.

LadyEllen -> RE: Denouncement (3/3/2010 10:45:15 AM)

You'd be surprised GT; there's an apocryphal tale of an Afro-Caribbean guy booking into a hotel in Scotland over the phone. He's got the full "Jammicarn" accent and an obviously "black voice" and the process goes on fine until they ask his name, to which he replies "Campbell".

"We have no vacancies" comes the response

Ask Ireland.

What must be understood is that many of the other countries are part of the "United Kingdom" under protest. Wales has it's own language, cultural traditions, and ethnicity and yet the Welsh are often treated as second class citizens in their own country.

They are part of the UK the way Native American tribes are part of the United States, with about the same treatment.

What a load of utter shite. Where are you from?

You'll find that the British Army draws proportionately from England Scotland and Wales - and always has done.

The English Scots and Welsh are nothing like native Americans - we're like cousins who argue over pretty much anything but when push comes to shove we'd back each other before any other nation.

It's usually Yanks looking for an identity/history who peddle this nonsense - I'd be amazed were you anything but.

You'll always find people who sit outside established wisdom - but assuming the ony real telling point is in hard times then have a look at WW1 and WW2 when the Scots VOLUNTEERED in greater numbers than the English.

I, Jonnie Boy, hereby and forthwith, disclaim  all, or any claim to "Englishness"  which I may have ever (preceeding this claim) been likely to claim ... and since being therefore Welsh only ... willl conduct myself respectfully and accordingly in the ways of my kin.

I have many English friends (which seems to be an issue with an "English" minority)... but I will no longer be insulted on the grounds of race, creed, gender, nor sexuality by anyone without recourse to justice nor law, simply on  the basis of my skin colour, ethnic origin, gender, religious beliefs, or lack thereof ...
Therefore, I will pursue ANY llitigant issue/person by their/my own means to my satisfaction (including costs)..

This most public statement, is, I believe, my legitimate  word.

Jonnie Boy

Technically that's a REnouncement, not a denoucement.

Whether you also wish to denounce the English is an open question.

Rather fortunate that for you, all those special offers on down the pub and all !

I'm firmly of the belief that it should be a proper national holiday in England, and not just because it's your birthday [;)].
