I am sure that the FAA will think it was a big deal. That controller is a moron and should be fired.

The FAA is a knee-jerk agency.  They react only when they have to.

The only reason this ever came up was because some geek without a life was monitoring the frequency playing pretend pilot and he recorded and posted it.

Then the media got hold of it.  Otherwise there would be no controversy.

It's what our media consists of these days, sensationalism disguised as legitimate news.

Of course the FAA will make a big deal out of it. They would do the same thing if a kid went into the cockpit and was allowed to give a speech to the passengers.

Making the huge leap that the controller is a moron though is pretty far fetched. It is easy to make the comparison to a surgeon and say "Oh my God, that would be horrible." But if a doctor let the kid listen to a patient's heart beat or take a pulse, not so much.

Are there aspects of every single career that would be inappropriate for a parent to allow a child to do? Of course. Do air traffic controllers go through rigorous training to do their jobs? Yes, but that is because they are being trained to direct multiple planes to do different things all at one time. This kid was giving GROUND instructions to ONE pilot, directing them to which runway (if my memory serves me) he would be taking off from. The father was telling him what to say at all times.

I'm sure that some of you are so offended by the "adios amigo" comment and how "unprofessional" it is. You obviously have never been in very high stressed positions where people will do what they can to lighten to the mood and relief some stress. Chances are if you heard recordings of what goes on in an Air Traffic Control Tower every day, you would be screaming for all of them to be fired. Likewise with the pilots.

It's easy to hear something and have a knee jerk reaction and demand that people be put out of work. Apparently, it isn't so easy to really look at the situation and see that nothing bad happened. Trying to imply that it could have resulted in a serious accident doesn't fly, because it didn't happen. We could say that if a licensed air traffic controller suddenly had a coughing fit, planes would fall out of the air. Honestly, that has higher odds of happening than this kid telling the pilot to take off from runway "x." Would you then call for a firing because of a coughing fit?

Yes, it violated policy and regulations and needs to be dealt with. It doesn't make the guy a moron, and I seriously doubt that any of you trying to hold this man to such standards could possibly be meeting them in your own careers.

There are several occupations where 'take your kid to work' might not be such a good idea. The control tower at JFK is one of them. Then let the kid play on the mike. Great idea...

Imagine if the dad had been a gynecologist [8D] .

An air traffic controller is one of the most important jobs there is. It is very dangerous. Just because no planes fell out of the sky doesn't mean it's not a big deal. It means THEY GOT LUCKY. Both the air traffic controller and his supervisor should be fired, since he did it TWICE.

Jeffff -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 1:53:03 PM)

Disciplined?.. I can see that. I think firing them would be an over reaction.

Air trafffic controllers are highly trained because they have an important job that can mean life and death.  I do agree that a child aping what an adult says it not a big thing.  However, that father was supposed to be concentrating on his job.  How can he concentrate on his job and make good informed decisions if he is pointing out things to his children or watching the children so they do not touch something they should not touch?  I've been lead to believe that a controllers job is very stressful and takes a great deal of concentration.  Where was the father's concentration?  Was it on his job or divided between his job and his children?

NihilusZero -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 2:01:11 PM)

Gross overreaction.

Pilots mentioned in the article reacted with lighthearted amusement. There is no mention of the child being left unattended or left not being told precisely what to say. It's even mentioned that the father follows up the boy's lines with more detailed instructions to reassure the situation.

If the actions were against the FAA policies, then you can't really argue with whatever silly reprimands or punishments they want to mete out for this innocent episode, but to call it endangerment or outright misconduct by the parent is 'the sky is falling' talk.

Totally. I heard the tape on BBC News and there was absolutely no sign whatsoever of the pilot being in the least perplexed.

Finally someone tries to make air travel fun again, and that's how people react. Hell, I remember when the sexy air hostesses would take us kids to visit the pilot so he'd show us his cockpit.

domiguy -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 2:12:53 PM)

lets see, ladyangelika, servantforuse, Sserpentia and peppermint think it was a tragic event.

I have never been more confident that if these four agree on any topic whatsoever you can bet the life of your plane landing kids that they are wrong.

Take it to the bank.
