Did anyone out there ever hear of a sitter ? You don't let your kid take over the mike at JFK. He was directing traffic on the tarmac at one of the busiest airports in the country. His supervisor or whoever let that kid get on air should also have been fired.

Yea, spoken like a true childless person. Even the best "backup" plans for sitters can sometimes go awry. If you had fully read my post, you would have noticed that I made a mention about the difficulties of obtaining "last minute" child care.

servantforuse -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 7:14:17 PM)

'Childless person',, not hardly. I have two daughters and two grand daughters with a third on the way. I know all about getting a sitter for snow days and a bunch of other days as well.

DomMeinCT -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 7:40:15 PM)

Fast reply....

Remember when the helicopter and plan collided over the Hudson in August?  Even though the controller on the phone and the absent supervisor weren't to blame, the FAA got a lot of flak and the public in general doesn't like the idea of putting its lives in  the hands of distracted air traffic controllers.  This guy has the bad timing of following that incident, which people still remember.

thornhappy -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 7:42:00 PM)

Anyone on a UA flight could've heard this via the in-flight entertainment (Channel 9).  Any airport that size has a very fast pace in operations.

BTW, ground controllers don't do trivial work.  I've gone through O'Hare a lot, listening to Channel 9 and have heard taxiway incursions in the process.  Give a guy a wrong turn and at best you have a small fiasco, at worst you have a collision on takeoff or landing.

I am sure that the FAA will think it was a big deal. That controller is a moron and should be fired.

The FAA is a knee-jerk agency.  They react only when they have to.

The only reason this ever came up was because some geek without a life was monitoring the frequency playing pretend pilot and he recorded and posted it.

Then the media got hold of it.  Otherwise there would be no controversy.

It's what our media consists of these days, sensationalism disguised as legitimate news.

It isn't that easy for everyone to find snow day sitters. Glad it was easy for you. Then again, from your posts, I still can't help but wonder whether or not you could actually measure up to the standards you set for others. Probably not, since most people who are that rigid can't meet their own standards.

In any case, I'm sure you are delighted that the man was fired rather than face less harsh repurcussions. I'm sure if you realized the reality of all the things that are going on "behind the scenes" of your everyday life, many people would be fired for what they are doing. Luckily for them, you haven't a clue what's going on in the background of those situations.

If you have to take your kid to work, and you happen to be an air traffic controller at JFK, make him do some homework. He isn't there to direct traffic on the tarmac. People could have been killed.

SoulPiercer -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 8:53:16 PM)

I'm a former air traffic controller. What I'm about to write here will probably scare the hell out of you. Turn away if you're squeamish.

ATC is one of the few jobs in the world where you can get hired with absolutely no previous experience, unless like myself, you worked as a controller in the military. Why? Because the FAA is the only company hiring.

After you go through about 2 to 4 years of training and you finally get to sit in "the big chair" or "the hot seat", guess what? There is a senior controller sitting right behind you, telling you what to do and what to say.  Hmmm... sort of like a father telling his kid what to say. Granted this kid didn't have the 2 to 4 years of training, but play along with me.

The headline of this story was written to be misleading and shocking. The reality is this: the kid was not directing traffic. The father was. There are several steps the father had to go through before giving a departure clearance. The kid was just talking on the radio, repeating what the father said. No complaints came from the pilots. In fact, in the article I read, several pilots complimented the child for a job well done. So .. if airline pilots who have a few minutes more flight time than any of us weren't outraged, why is the flying public so up in arms?

To me, this had the potential to be a great story. Dad takes his kid to work instead of dropping the kid off at daycare or turning on the TV and handing the kid a game controller. What's even better is the fact that the kid took an interest in what Dad does for a living. You can bet this kid is probably really upset now, believing he got his dad in trouble.

It's too bad that your children passed on your genes to their grandchildren...All I know is that if they don't have webbed feet and eat glue I would be deeply surprised.

How?

You again seem to be missing the point that the father was in control of the situation.

The child was not making the decisions.

An air traffic controller is one of the most important jobs there is. It is very dangerous. Just because no planes fell out of the sky doesn't mean it's not a big deal. It means THEY GOT LUCKY. Both the air traffic controller and his supervisor should be fired, since he did it TWICE.

Then please explain to me how "THEY GOT LUCKY".

What do you think would have been the dire consequences that may have happened?

I actually didn't over react at all. I stated an opinion. I work with quite a few ATCs. I know their world pretty well. There is very little room for fooling around.

Just out of curiosity, what is this work you do with "with quite a few ATC's"?

rulemylife -> RE: Take your kid to work... (3/4/2010 9:49:27 PM)

No, but it is much trickier clearing a plane for take off at an international airport than in a regional airport. Specifically an international airport which borders on the Atlantic. Some airports are much more intense to work in as an ATC than others.

Uhhh..............yes it is more intense because you have a higher volume of traffic at certain times of the day.

The procedure is no different and no "trickier" from one airport to another.

And I'm not sure of the criteria in Canada but in the U.S. a small regional airport can be labeled an international airport just like JFK depending on Customs availability.

I'm assuming you posted this in response to me since you included my quote, but I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

But BTW, this was the tower controller not the ground controller.

Thanks for the info, SP; it helps illuminate the situation, hearing from someone that's been inside their world.

Where are you getting your information from? I'd not discounting it but I have never come across such information.

Well the regulators seem to think it is. That's what matters really.

Maybe it would have been a good idea if his kid was in school where he should have been. I guess he did learn something that day though.

Yea, he learned that sometimes people overreact to dumb shit and because of that his dad is out of work.

Second of all, you believe that ATC NEVER make a mistake that needs to be corrected? Are you really so naive that you think these people are the picture of perfection?

That isn't even close to what I said. Of course they're capable of making a mistake; they're human beings.
The point I made was that when you add a child into the mix, you are increasing the potential for a mistake. If you don't see that, you're as stupid as you are cunty.
