I'm a former air traffic controller. What I'm about to write here will probably scare the hell out of you. Turn away if you're squeamish.

Nah, nothing makes me squeamish. Learning through mentoring/observation and under close supervision is important in a job where all the risks to human factors are so high.
quote:

ATC is one of the few jobs in the world where you can get hired with absolutely no previous experience, unless like myself, you worked as a controller in the military. Why? Because the FAA is the only company hiring.

If you want to stay within the US. Some European countries are offering amazing relocation packages.
quote:

After you go through about 2 to 4 years of training and you finally get to sit in "the big chair" or "the hot seat", guess what? There is a senior controller sitting right behind you, telling you what to do and what to say.  Hmmm... sort of like a father telling his kid what to say. Granted this kid didn't have the 2 to 4 years of training, but play along with me.

The headline of this story was written to be misleading and shocking. The reality is this: the kid was not directing traffic. The father was. There are several steps the father had to go through before giving a departure clearance. The kid was just talking on the radio, repeating what the father said. No complaints came from the pilots. In fact, in the article I read, several pilots complimented the child for a job well done. So .. if airline pilots who have a few minutes more flight time than any of us weren't outraged, why is the flying public so up in arms?

To me, this had the potential to be a great story. Dad takes his kid to work instead of dropping the kid off at daycare or turning on the TV and handing the kid a game controller. What's even better is the fact that the kid took an interest in what Dad does for a living. You can bet this kid is probably really upset now, believing he got his dad in trouble.

You know, it could have been a great story if the father had gotten an ok from the proper authorities and people were warned.

As I said earlier, from what I've read (and I'm sure I didn't get the whole story), rules were broken. You surely know the importance of a certain rigor in this field, right? But the firing was over the top.

I actually didn't over react at all. I stated an opinion. I work with quite a few ATCs. I know their world pretty well. There is very little room for fooling around.

Just out of curiosity, what is this work you do with "with quite a few ATC's"?

Obvioulsy I work within the industry, right? ;-)

Thank you for the information divi. It would have been just as useful without the snarkiness attached. :-)

It was in response to folks who thought that few people would've heard the transmissions, and other folks who thought ground control wasn't a big job.

Anyone on a UA flight could've heard this via the in-flight entertainment (Channel 9).  Any airport that size has a very fast pace in operations.

BTW, ground controllers don't do trivial work.  I've gone through O'Hare a lot, listening to Channel 9 and have heard taxiway incursions in the process.  Give a guy a wrong turn and at best you have a small fiasco, at worst you have a collision on takeoff or landing.

I'm assuming you posted this in response to me since you included my quote, but I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

But BTW, this was the tower controller not the ground controller.

Who said the guy was fired?

You people actually believe servantforuse? That guy has never been right a single time in his life....Not once. The daughters he talked about I am confident are not even his.

I am confident that the guy was not fired. Only because that would verify an outcome that I do not support. If you fuckers haven't noticed I am the sanest motherfucker out here. I call it as I see it and I am usually spot on.

Servanforuse is an idiot as well as everyone that shares his warped views of the world.

Marie has sex with gollywogs.

I think the guy's on leave pending investigation.

But who cares? The reaction is overblown.

Oh look, there's a plane flying up there. I wonder whether a kid's remote controlling it?

Have you ever been around adults who say to their young kids something like ..."go tell your mother to get me a beer." They should be very worried that the kid might fuck up and say that daddy needs a glass of poison.

No, I can't say that I have. We obviously don't move within the same circles.

I realise that you prefer Catholic nuns, like Jeffff, but don't dismiss us 'till you've tried us - we're well lubricated and debauched beyond your wildest dreams. I would have rocked the Auschwitz bordello.
