Woman charged with killing husband is lobbyist

A 45-year-old woman, charged with ending a domestic dispute by killing her 26-year-old husband of five days, is a registered lobbyist for a group fighting domestic violence.

...

Witnesses told police that Bridges was wearing a nightgown and a shower cap as she argued with Rankins on the sidewalk on North Avenue near West Peachtree Street around 10:45 p.m. Monday.

And moments later, witnesses said, they heard shots. They said she then "calmly walked away."

A MARTA police officer stopped her as she was getting into her car, perhaps to return to her home nearby on Centennial Olympic Park Drive.

According to Atlanta police, Bridges told investigators that she and Rankins had been dating for a few months and were just married on Feb. 24.

Hey ... I work near that street!

Well, she may have prevented domestic violence.

Brain -> RE: The irony ... oh, the irony! (3/4/2010 8:19:40 PM)

Obviously, this is his fault because he should have carried a gun to defend himself. I don't know how hundreds of  times I hear people say here they need to have their guns to protect themselves. So IT IS HIS fault.

That transcript will have to be good for a laugh. She probably gets paid, and maybe makes more than he does. She has connections in the government and through about three phone calls she could probably have this guy deported to Antarctica.

On the other hand, one thing is for sure she won't be going back to him like so many.

I agree cant stop domestic violence without a gun! :)

How very sad for both of their families, it does not say whether they had children...

Women can abuse men as much as men abuse women (although statistically women are more heavily impacted)... I hope that the groups that help people impacted by domestic violence are not tarnished by one person's action...

As a survivor of domestic violence I know how important it is to bring awareness to the topic and to support others who have had their lives ripped apart. I do not know what happened in this particular case, hopefully the just outcome will prevail

Huh?!?!?!?.  She was on the sidewalk in a nightgown, and shower cap.  AND A GUN. So she was carrying, with clothes that can't hold a gun.  She was in public half dressed.  And she held a job as a lobbyist for an organization that may not exist, and whose existence she forgot about.

She's a fruit loop.

DS, somehow that sounds like it surprises you, why ?

Brain -> RE: The irony ... oh, the irony! (3/4/2010 9:09:17 PM)

The people who need to use their brains are those who say we need to have guns to 'protect' ourselves; that's who needs to start using their brain.

Brain -> RE: The irony ... oh, the irony! (3/4/2010 9:15:21 PM)

And I should add especially Scalia, Roberts, Alito and Thomas of the United States Supreme Court, right-wing extremists.  I wouldn't be surprised if they are all Roman Catholics. By the way does anybody know if George Bush became a Roman Catholic as was rumored?

You know people with your attitude need to learn the way I did.

You need to have someone break into your house and beat you nearly to death with a fucking stick like happened to me.

I really dont understand why there was not a cop there to protect me.

YOu know the really funny part?  Once they know I did not have a gun they came back for seconds.

Know what happened?

Fucker damn near died of fright when he was face to face with a 40 cal.

KNow what?  I have not have one problem since.

I odnt wish bad things on people but anti gunners need to learn.

Shut up!

domiguy -> RE: The irony ... oh, the irony! (3/4/2010 9:25:43 PM)

Again...No one reads the entire article...

"Bridges' group isn't among the prominent domestic violence lobbying groups in Georgia, said Kirsten Rambo, the executive director of the Georgia Commission on Family Violence.

"This is the first I've heard about that organization," Rambo said. "I certainly couldn't say if they were legitimate or not," she said, adding, "It's certainly a new name to me."

Bridges has filed sparse lobbying expenses, according to State Ethics Commission records. So far this year, she's reported spending $20 -- for parking while lobbying for the abuse database."

Some lobbyist.

I did not catch that, but my post wouldn't have changed anyways...

Domestic violence and murder of a spouse is sad thing for everyone...

I do not know if there was an agenda related to the OP's decision to post the article. I did not think it belonged in politics because it is a family tragedy more than a politics story....

If there was an agenda behind posting this story because this person was a lobbyist, aren't we all usually  anti domestic violence? I mean it is an important issue, and I can't imagine that someone would be actually against domestic violence lobbies which seek to do things like make it easier for women to get protection orders, etc.
