mp072004 -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (3/30/2006 5:56:13 PM)

Domme appears pseudo-French, so it should be pronounced as one syllable with an elongated "mm" sound. Words like "comme" and "femme" are good examples. If "Domme" was supposed to be pronounced with two syllables, it would have an accent aigu (acute) on the e, and, most likely, a second e following the accented e to signify the feminine gender. I dislike the use of "domme", whatever the pronunciation. It's an inappropriate abbreviation of "dominant". It is unnecessary to modify the category of "dominant" to specify the gender of the person inhabiting the category, particularly as English is not a language requiring gendered nouns. Furthermore, from the beginning of the use of "dominant" in BDSM, males and females both inhabited the category of "dominant"--thus women are in no greater need of unique designation than men. Finally, as I said above, it's pseudo-French, and bad pseudo-French at that--it's just plain aesthetically displeasing. <descends from soapbox> Monica
