Interesting.

If any of you ever get to Memphis, look me up, I would just love to introduce you to some 'Dom-may' friends of mine and sit back and watch the fun after someone corrects them.....[:D]

I wouldn't dream of correcting them, but I wouldn't be corrected either.

Oumae -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (3/31/2006 3:39:17 AM)

It is something that seems to get a stronger reaction that side of the pond.

I'll pronounce it both ways and many here do too.  I am a Domme ( less letters to type than Femdom [;)] ) but if talking about a mixed group I would use the Dommay pronounciation to differentiate between sexes.

*cracks up laughing* Genius, I tell ya'!

And I've been known to pronounce it "Doh-may" when the distinction needs to be made between male and female Dominants. But mostly, I prefer to just say "Dominant" and not make much of a distinction at all...My love knows exactly who I am talking about! *smiles*

MsSonnetMarwood -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (3/31/2006 4:36:16 AM)

I pronounce it "dom", although if I want to deferentiate in verbal speech, I might use the term "femdom".

"Dom", I believe, is short for "dominant", not "dominatrix".    I have only seen the term "dominatrix"  as a reference to a professional dominant.

Same here.  If anyone called me a dominatrix, I'd correct them, as I am not entitled to use that term.

I don't like Domme, particularly pronounced Dom May (must be the "may" part).  I didn't like it when my butch girlfriend called me "femme"-which she pronounced "femmy", either.

I prefer Female Dominant, or the term my German boss has used to refer to me: Domina.

But that's just me.

I'm also of the opinion that Domme should be pronounced "dahm"  just like Dom..  I use both Domme and Dom.  I have never pronounced Domme "Dahm-aye" though I have heard other people pronounce it that way.  "Dahm-aye" just sounds so moronic.  If ever asked if I am a "Dahm-aye" (in person or verbally) I usually just reply "No, I'm not a Dahm, I'm a switch."

I have a stupid, but honest question. What is the proper pronunciation for Domme? Should it be pronounced Dom-may, and if so, why? (I hate the sound of it) Who came up with this word and pronunciation? Does anyone know?

Femme is not pronounced fem-may!

The majority of people I know from around the country just say dom. Does it REALLY matter? Some folks get bent out of shape if you are ignorant enough to say dom when referring to a Dom-may.

Staci

I don't pronounce it and I don't use it.

I don't feel the need to create a term that is gender specific.

I'm a dominant or a dom. If someone wants to know my gender or sex, they can either ask me or look at my name (which is a pretty good hint).

WhiteRadiance -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (3/31/2006 7:08:04 AM)

I prefer Domina or Dominant.

Dom-may sounds so contrived that I have harbored thoughts of starting a protest against it!

Thanks to all who has put in their 2 cents.. I feel better now!

PainsPleasure -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (3/31/2006 7:28:15 AM)

When I first came into this lifestyle, thirty years ago (you were only nine at that time and probably had no idea of this lifestyle) the usual way to address a Dominant was either Sir/Master or Ma'am/Mistress.  Domme was used, since the typical gender roles were still somewhat in place, as a sign of respect to a Female Dominant and then only by those who knew her well or by herself if she did so chose.  Today a female Dominant may call herself what ever she choses, including Master (some lesbians identify more in the male gender role and feel this better suits them).  It is solely a matter of choice and if this is your choice to be called Domina or Dominant then let those who know you well know this and, (I would suggest very politely for the first several months) correct them when they mistakenly address you in a way you choose not to be addressed.  In fact, I know several very dominant women who prefer to be called Diva so that there is little or no chance of addressing them in a way that would offend them.

All this, of course is only my humble opinion and I hope that no one take offense at any remarks I have made.

Sir Pain

I don't like the way it sounds either so I just have mine call me Ma'am or Mistress. Though I did hear someone say Mastress the other day and I thought hmm I like the sound of that one.

*laughs* nope.. Mastress to me sounds too much like "mattress" so I'd just end up laughing.  Though the Diva thing sounded a bit more up my alley.

dame (dah may) means never in Japanese I believe.  I took 2 semesters but I don't remember much.

talmar -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (4/1/2006 8:28:46 AM)

I have served several life style Dommes & they just say Domme.  But one could always stick with Ms,. Ma'am, Mistress....etc.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (4/1/2006 3:01:27 PM)

When typing I usually use Dom or Domme to indicate male/female.
When chatting with someone,I ask if they have ever had a Master or Mistress.
If I want to know if they have been to a Pro I ask if the have seen a Pro-Dom or
Pro-Domme,(I dont pronounce it 'dom may' when talking I agree it sounds terrible).
My job title is Dominatrix.
When My submissives or slave bishop is talking to Me,I like being called Mistress or Goddess.

I would have to say overall it depends on the circumstances as to what term I use.

NickInSLC -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (4/1/2006 3:43:27 PM)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this thread.  The dom-may issue has been a pet peeve of mine for years.  I rank it right up there with people who use screen names in real life, those who regard either gender as inferior, guys who pee on the toilet seat, and those who build floggers with furniture tacks.  Yes, it really is that bad.

But it's not too late.  Our numbers are growing.  If we all take a stand, we can rid the world of this foolishness.  So the next time you hear somebody say dom-may, gag them with a dirty sock, backhand them, bludgeon them to unconciousness with a large dildo, or even simply tell them how dumb they sound.

My theory is that most people don't want to be dumb, it's just that they aren't smart enough to always make the distinction.  If we can only call stupidity to their attention, they will be self correcting.  Nobody really wants to be dumb.

It's pronounced dom.
The "me" is to designate that the noun refers to a female.
Dom = male dominant
Domme = female dominant

HellsMichelle -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (4/2/2006 9:54:42 AM)

Madori explained it like this at her seminar on female dominance...
would you say, "She's a blonday-femmay-dommay"? No! You would say she is a blond - fem- dom [use phonetics here to hear it out loud]...

Usually when I here someone refer to herself as a dommay, i know she is inexperienced and share that insight from Madori. Seems work just fine~ Lv M

I've heard the dom-may nonsense from experienced people as well.  It's probably not the best metric with which to gauge a person's experience level.

Oh, by the way, it's 'Midori.'

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: How do you pronounce Domme and why? (4/2/2006 11:36:38 AM)

I have heard "dom-may" from all experience levels as well.  I recently heard in from a Woman with over 25 years in the lifestyle, in fact.

I do think Midori's explanation makes a lot of sense and presents a good argument against the "dom-may" pronunciation.  Like I mentioned earlier, someone locally told Me that there was a campaign against the "dom-may" pronunciation because it was a derogatory word in Japanese, and I just didn't find that argument very compelling.

I just prefer "female dominant"... I can't stand the way "dom-may" sounds either.

When I first saw this years ago it made my skin crawl. I too dislike it. Sounds silly to me.
