On Election Day remember it was the republicans who want to spend your money on foreign conquest but not on taking care of Americans.

Reid Formally Notifies Republicans He Will Use Reconciliation to Pass Health Care Bill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid formally informed Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell Thursday that he will use the budgetary process of reconciliation to try and pass a final round of changes to the health care bill.

Reconciliation only requires a simple majority whereas Democrats would need to win 60 votes in order to bypass a Republican-led filibuster.

"We plan to use the regular budget reconciliation process that the Republican caucus has used many times," Reid told McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader. "Keep in mind that reconciliation will not exclude Republicans from the legislative process."

What have we had now? Coming up on two months of press conferences, speeches and pronouncements? The Dems have been waking up every morning with the power to force bill this on a citizenry that doesn't want it, and every night, they go back to bed without having done it.

But they can count on your vote, right, Brian? Oh wait... nevermind.

As bad as Reid is in so many ways, one thing you have to say about him is he's usually a pretty good vote-counter. If he's declaring this position, he must think he's got the votes. It'll be interesting to see whether he really has. Let's fucking hope so.

Reid isn't the one having a hard time getting a majority out of a majority right now, Panda. This stopped being about how well one can count a good while back. This is about how competent one is to lead.

We seem to be short of that mark.

Yea, I agree. It is much easier to finance a couple $trillion wars (off books) with 2 tax cuts totalling some $600 billion. (through reconciliation)

Trouble is, you have to be a repub 'fiscal conservative' to do that. Here was an admin. (W's) that was looking at $5.6 trillion surplus over 8 years when taking office. After all, what's $10 trillion in deficit spending between friends ?

Yep, they were. The only fault i have with the Obama administration is how long it took them to get the stars out of their eyes and realize to pass anything worthwhile they would have to get down and dirty. I was waiting for this to happen.

Waiting for what to happen, Tazzy? Yet another press release moment? Nancy Pelosi will probably have one of her own tomorrow, or maybe on the Sunday morning shows.

Maybe their clever plan is to keep dragging it out until Scalia and Roberts retire from the Supreme Court, and won't be able to chuck the whole thing anyway?

The Supremes don't rule on the Feng Shui, Mike.

Where does the Constitution grant gov't the authority to require people to purchase a private product? Granted, the Commerce Clause has been stretched like the asshole of a fat pain slave, but that is a question the court is going to have to ask and answer.

Hasn't Va voted pre-emptively to state that their citizens cannot be required to purchase insurance? Aren't other states considering similar law? That should fast-track this ponzi scheme to SCOTUS.
And, I can just about stand on my front porch and fire a rifle into Va. My CCW is good there, too.....

The Constitutionality of the Individual Mandate for Health Insurance

Taxing uninsured people helps to pay for the costs of the new regulations. The tax gives uninsured people a choice. If they stay out of the risk pool, they effectively raise other people’s insurance costs, and Congress taxes them to recoup some of the costs. If they join the risk pool, they do not have to pay the tax. A good analogy would be a tax on polluters who fail to install pollution-control equipment: they can pay the tax or install the equipment.

Although opponents will challenge the individual mandate in court, constitutional challenges are unlikely to succeed. The Supreme Court will probably not even consider the issue unless a federal court of appeals strikes the tax down. In that unlikely event, the Supreme Court will almost certainly uphold the tax, at least if it follows existing law. To strike down the individual mandate, it would have to reject decades of precedents. It is very unlikely that there are five votes on the current Court for staging such a constitutional revolution.

I've read several versions of this, and it's as silly now as when I first saw it. Where does the Constitution grant the authority to do almost anything Congress does? It's a set of principles, with a few specific prohibitions--and here conveniently twisted.

Like states' rights--just fine for preventing local control of firearms, but not applicable for Massachusetts' health care plan.

Or the silly distinction people make between buying votes with dollars or buying votes with tax cuts--either way, the same money gets where it's going.

If you prefer, raise taxes by the amount of a basic health care plan, "give" insurance to those who don't have it, give tax credits to people who already pay for insurance, individually or as an employment benefit, and then no one has to "buy" anything.

It's a silly point. You're just arranging pieces.

Want to do this right? Replace the current system with a single payer plan. Just do the damn take over.

Want to do this with private pieces and keep what you have? Then expanding the pool of the insured is key. Healthy people chip in to cover people who fall ill. It's how insurance works.

This has truly been an incredible process to witness. Now people are rationalizing the appropriateness of mandating, at the Federal level, the purchase of goods/services from a private party. The conflict with State's Rights making it impossible for interstate commerce to affect competitive pricing. In CA a +30% raise in health premiums is on the desk of Pozner waiting for the mandated insurance coverage to take affect, by Anthem, the largest provider. The increase directed to the exact people who will be required to get coverage - individuals, not currently involved in any plan.

Corporate welfare at its finest. Imagine the outcry from the same Administration apologists if a Republican proposal demanded that each and every US citizen buy anything from an industry or be subject to fines and penalties! I think the next logical move for the administration would be to require every citizen to have a checking account and pay monthly banking fees to help bail out the Financial institutions.

Meanwhile, as an example of all that's been accomplished over an astonishing short period of time; the administration's economic scorecard thus far:
President Obama's Budget

Would permanently expand the federal government by 3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) over 2007 pre-recession levels;
Would raise taxes on all Americans by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade;
Would raise taxes for 3.2 million small businesses and upper-income taxpayers by an average of $300,000 over the next decade;
Would borrow 42 cents for each dollar spent in 2010;
Would run a $1.6 trillion deficit in 2010--$143 billion higher than the recession-driven 2009 deficit;
Would leave permanent deficits that top $1 trillion as late as 2020;
Would dump an additional $74,000 per household of debt into the laps of our children and grandchildren; and
Would double the publicly held national debt to over $18 trillion.
