Aaargh. Do you people realize that you are part of the problem, even while you're arguing about solutions? (julia, butch, I'm looking at you.) Get off your fucking hobby horses, let go of your egos, and think about what the kids need, and how you can help contrive to let them get it. Do they need to recite the pledge of allegiance? Well, *whatever.* I did it for 12 years and never particularly noticed one way or the other. "blah blah flag blah blah one nation under god blah blah blah, time to talk to my friends." Don't start from the billions of things that are wrong.... (and, yes, I say this just having posted about such things myself.) Start from thinking about what is right. What do kids need to be able to *do* here and now, in 2010? How can they most effectively be taught to do it? How can you (or I, or anyone) contribute to making that happen? *That* would be productive. The rest is (quasi-)intellectual masturbation. Neither useful *nor* entertaining to anyone beyond yourselves.
