I need to rant or I am likely to explode all over the place and I don't want to have to clean that up.

I am tired of stupid people. I am tired of the lack of respect for others that roam the planet. Most of all, I am tired of bullshit.

Let me explain. I was going over to take care of my Mom last night and there was a car parked in the street. It is a one lane street (pretty much) and there were at least three spaces open right next to where this genius decided to park his car and stop traffic. Excuse me! Park legally rather than think you are the only fucking person on the road. This doesn't make sense to me.

I was driving into the office today and school had let out and as I was driving along a teenager walked right out into the street in front of me and crossed the street. He saw me... He looked right at me but he walked out in front of my car anyway. When I was a kid, I was taught that you allow the cars to go and THEN you cross when it is clear. I was taught that the cars could hurt you worse than you would hurt them. I was taught respect. What the hell happened to that? When did respect become something of the past?

On my way home from the store tonight, I was cut off twice, almost broadsided and had two people in expensive cars try to force their ways in front of me. My car is an early 90's minivan... it is no great prize, but it is paid for and it runs. It isn't a Hummer or a BMW, but that doesn't mean that the guy with the more expensive car has more right to the road than I do. I just do not get the logic here... my car is worth maybe $700... their cars were worth close to $40,000. So... in their arrogance they pit their expensive car against my old car. I figured that I would let them hit me and then sort out who would be more pissed off that their car was wrecked.

I find all of this to be an indication that values, especially the value you place on others rights, is deteriorating. This is no sudden revelation to me, but this all drove a point home to me. I was raised with different values. I was taught to respect others. I was taught that other people had just as much right to be here as I do. I was taught to say please and thank you. I was taught to be courteous and to have good manners. Does every generation go through this? As people age, is it our perspectives that change or is it, in fact, the world that is changing? Is respect becoming a thing of the past? Is it possible to turn that trend around?

I miss the way things used to be. I just don't understand what happened.

Thanks for letting me get that off of my chest.

I had a guy try to force his way in front of Me while he was coming off an exit ramp.  Assuming that he saw Me there, I continued to go forward as I was in bumper to bumper traffic.  The idiot broadsided My Caddy, then proceeded to jump out of the car and yell and scream at Me, calling Me every name in the book.   People are stupid.  Period.

I got the car in the shop to be fixed and was given a brand new Altima to rent.  I had not had it three days when a guy was following too closely in his minivan rear-ended Me in a snowstorm.  They found him at fault, but still.  What a piss off.

Too many single parent families, lack of discipline at home, and at school (don't sue us, please!) are to a large degree responsible for rotting society. At work we see child after child ruling the roost, lame-ass parent/s in tow as they come to court.....when I was a kid, I kept my mouth shut (mostly lol), and if we went somewhere, I kept my hands to myself, cause if I didn't, I was going to get my ass tore up. And when my parents told me something, they kept to their word.  "Son, if  you say/do that again, so and so is going to happen.".........AND IT FUCKING DID.

Depending on my mood I will sometimes swear to myself in the car when idiot drivers piss me off.  Other times like the other day I was leaving the  University parking lot and a girl back out of her spot so fast she almost hit it me...  soo close!  She looked very scared and embarrassed.  She mouthed "oh sorry" (she was blonde)   And I just smiled and said "its ok"...    although I did just pee myself...     So I know how you feel Gauge, I bet it feels good to finally be home safe and away from the stupid people.

It seems that every generation feels that the generation that follows is lacking in manners.  I think its just one of those stages of human development.

Just remember what they said in Fried Green Tomatoes.  "I'm older, and I have more insurance."

I was taught

I learned not too long ago to be suspicious of much of what I was taught. I am trying to start with a clean slate, unteach myself much of what I was taught, examine things as rationally as I could, and go from there.

For example, I have found out that by getting upset about people's behavior as they drive on the road madly, one can end up aggravating oneself. I have determined not to give people control over me.

I drive as defensively as I can, never curse them even as they are aggressive on the road, I never give them the finger, I try to get away from the crazy people, and am never upset no matter how much they curse. I don't let them control me through their stupidity.

I am at peace almost all the time.

I read somewhere once somebody using almost the exact same words as above and was shocked at first. You don't normally hear this said in polite society, but I have seen numerous examples and decided this may very well be true.

One can, I think, thrive amid the rampant stupidity.  At least that is the goal.

One thing I have noticed a lot of Texas drivers doing, especially the gigantic SUV ones, is going into your lane, forcing you to go off the road, just to get one car in front of you.

Yay for you, you beat me by one car.

Maybe our government should work on legislation to deport crappy drivers !

Reminds me of a great bumper sticker I once saw on a car--"I don't hate mankind. I just hate people!"

You missed the point of my post... it really has little to do with road rage or road based incidents than it has to do with the general apathy that people display toward one another. It isn't about letting someone gain control over me, it is me wondering what the hell happened to respect. I could name many examples of that and none of them have anything to do with the road.

What happened today was the climax of several weeks of horseshit from other people that were rude, unnecessary and blatantly obvious that there was intent to do what they did... it wasn't an accident.

As far as unlearning what I was taught, believe me, I have many times over. I was still brought up to respect my fellow man. I was still taught manners, courtesy and compassion. Somewhere that changed. Someone stopped teaching these principles. They were ingrained into me, they are a deeply rooted part of who I am. My kids have learned the same lessons of respect etc. that I did. Funny that when I had them out in public when they were much younger I always got compliments on how well mannered and behaved they were. It has to be taught... people have forgotten that and I want to know why.

I don't give these people control over me, it is an observation. And yes, I had to vent it because it has really begun to bother me more and more.

You are SO right...I can remember being a kid and my folks saying "If you sass me one more time your gonna get it!" and before I could get "but" outta my mouth you better believe I got it lmao....
I was just listening to something on the radio yesterday, and they were asking people what happened to manners. Most people agreed that it was just not being instilled into people like it used to be. Whether its cutting folks off in traffic, or just plain coughing without covering their mouths. Society SUCKS these days lol....

To the Op..LOL...MY son was just saying almost word for word what you have expressed. Now my son is only 25 so now I am thinking it cannot be that as we get older our perspectives change it actually is a deterioration of common courtesy and respect. Why this is happening?..I dont know ...probably a conglomoration of things...But it does become worrisome for the future. How to stop this trend ?..I wish I knew......be well....Tempting

However, you are the one feeling anger and frustration, having your blood pressure elevated and adding bitterness into your life to the level that you are even posting it on a newsgroup.  Those other people who offended you went on their merry way.

You will live a much happier and healthier life if you don't carry around anger and frustration over things that already happened and you cannot control anyway.

You can't control what other people do, but you can control your own emotions and reactions.  Allow yourself one minute of reaction time, then let it go. You will be a much more pleasant person to be around and you'll add years to your life if you are prone to high blood pressure.

Have you thought about meditation or yoga?
