Is there a difference?

romancenkink -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 8:25:14 PM)

yes there is a difference:
Life is like a shit sandwich, the less bread you make the shit you gotta eat.
Lifestyle on the other hand is the  "shit".

Reminds me of a comedian I heard a number of years ago.  She was remarking on the fact that gays are said to have a 'life style'; her response to that was, "So, straight people have hair and I have a hair style?"

IronBear -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 8:55:04 PM)

<<Very tongue in cheek>> Some people have a life..... Others live their life in Style.

TheShadows -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 9:09:57 PM)

I've asked myself this question before, so I figured "what the hell?", and looked up the definitions of both.  Take what you want and leave the rest.  (Courtesy of dictionary.com)

LIFE:
a.  The property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism.
b.  The characteristic state or condition of a living organism.

LIFESTYLE:
a.  A way of life or style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group.

In looking at the definitions, I would say, yes, there is a difference.

In my interpretation, life is just that...life.  The state of being alive, as opposed to dead.  I see lifestyle as a word to denote the style in which we live.  It is our "style of living", and for us, it does reflect our attitudes and values.

Just my opinion.  As always, YMMV.

starymists -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 9:16:57 PM)

I think there can be a difference, depending on your definition of 'life' and 'lifestyle'. For me, 'life' generally encompasses all areas of my life...both lifestyle and vanilla parts where 'lifestyle' is my personal, private time where I am free to be who and what I am. There is certainly a lot of overlap, depending on the circumstances of every day responsibilities. But, for example, I can't always be a submissive at work. The nature of my work is to be in control. I can't always be in control with my family. Sometimes I need to serve there. But with my Dominant, I serve all the time :) That's the pesonal part where I am free to just be.

Angeni -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 9:23:18 PM)

Greetings :)

I think there can be a difference, but it would depend solely on how you would define the two. Some may argue that 24/7, 365 days a year would equal life and that anything less would be 'lifestyle', but then others would differ in their opinions. The only correct answer would be how you yourself would define it.

denika -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 9:31:19 PM)

Good question,
I can only answer for Rob and myself

We live our life in the style that suites us best.
The fact that I am a bottom involved in an SM relationship, or that my husband and I have an open marriage, or that  we like to watch movies, or I like doing cross stitch or being flogged till I am bloody *s* is all apart of a life that we are living and enjoying. Am I a 'lifestyler' when I am at work and telling EMS where they need to respond to, yes. It is all a part of my personality. That goes back to appropriate behavor. Do I advertise that I'm submissive, no, jut like the straight people I work with don't advertise their sexuality (lol for the most part *s*)     I gues it is about dividual perspectives,  I live a life that could be considered diffrent so to some that means it is labelled a 'lifestyle choice'  not just  'our life'

This is getting good [:D] Thanks derinka I'd forgotten about that ~
  1. Life: Something which we all have to some degree or other. (Some have an excelent one wanting nothing, others have a shit of a life with virtually no hope and nothing but fighting for existance and the rest are somewhere in between.
  2. Life style: The style in which people live their lives.
  3. Lifestyle Choice: The choice presented to people so they may choose the lifestyle/s they wish to live...

i realized after the fact that i posed this as sort of a 'zen' question... not intentionally... i just am never very wordy... maybe the question is 'were Yyou born as Yyou are today or did Yyou 'choose' it (in the BDSM context)... if you are a slave/submissive... were you born a slave/submissive or did you later in life 'choose' to be one... if You are a Dom/me/Master/Mistress... were You already predisposed to be as such, or did You at some point make a conscious choice about it?  Or did life as Yyou lived it choose it for Yyou?  (geesh i hope i'm making some sense here).

crouchingtigress -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (3/31/2006 10:21:28 PM)

Born creative, inquisitive and adventurous, chose to channel those traits into a lifetime exploration of my sexuality and spirituality. As  I type those words "I chose" I dont think that is totally right because so many times I felt swept away in what felt to me like a great current, and felt as though I did not have any choice but to follow my heart.

I believe I was predisposed (born) to be who I am today.  I have always had a Dominant personality, for as long as I, or anyone in my family, can remember.  I chose to mesh BDSM and D/s with an already existing part of myself.  The opportunity presented itself to explore these philosophies and activities that seemed to match what I wanted in my life, so I went for it.  I'm glad I did.

[Sidebar]  This thread made me think of a "Rush" lyric, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."  Dunno why. [/Sidebar]

Life, is living.

Lifestyle is the quality of life.

sweetpleaser -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (4/1/2006 5:05:56 AM)

I knew what you meant in the first post.   I believe most of us will tell you that we are born this way, but it took years for us to figure it out.  Another aspect is do you do this 24/7?   Is there anyone who turns their lifestyle into how they live?  I knew a few bonafide slaves on this site a long time ago who would tell you that they live it 24/7.   They go in public with collars and leashes and don't care how the world sees them.  I personally could not do this so I don't live my lifestyle as my life.

amayos -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (4/1/2006 10:02:20 AM)

Personally, I abhor the term "lifestyle", when it relates to what I do. The word connotes a certain trivial hipness that can be suitably arranged or rearranged, sort of like the aesthetics of interior decorating. It is essentially transient feeling to me and bears a slight sprinkle of cellophane pettiness.

I like "life" a little better, but it is too broad a brush. I like to use terms like nature, instinct, way, animality, order and the like. For me, those terms ring truer.

enthralled -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (4/1/2006 11:23:46 AM)

I don't know that I was born a 'slave'.  I have an extremely dominant personality, tend to 'take over' tasks at work, and take charge in a lot of situations; however, I identify as a slave. Though I may have been born with the capacity to serve, I believe that life events have contributed to who I have become.

truesub4u -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (4/1/2006 4:33:22 PM)

LOL Angelic, you're as bad as me as not saying it the wy you want to the first time... [:D]

As for me... mine is a choice. I don't know about being born this way. I do know for the most part, my parental units (LOL Been hanging with the kids too much again, that's what they call me now) Anyways........ I know my mom did her best to raise me to take charge, be in control always. Know what I want, and get what I want. She would shake her head at me in disgust if she knew I was a submissive.
Others might be born into this.. but for me.. I was raised one way... my own choice sent me another way.

wytchywoman -> RE: Life or Lifestyle? (4/1/2006 4:41:44 PM)

I've read some of the other posts here on this topic. I agree with them to an extent. They seem to work for the people who posted at least, but not for me.

Some people can quote dictionary definitions all they want. What does not change for me (believe it or not, I don't care) is that by the time I was in puberty, I knew that I would never be happen unless I was submitting to someone else. That's just me though, but for me that tells me all I need to know about both life and lifestyle.

It may sound a bit too simplistic intitally, but for me, I don't separate the two on a normal everyday basis.
