You might want to go back on page 3 or 4 when we talk about how accidents can happen even with all the precautions in place. I'm in absolute disagreement with the second portion of your post. Planning parenthood is a very intelligent decision. Having a kid out of obligation is not. - LA

Such a nasty topic. I used to be hardcore pro-life but as I grow older and less idealistic I've come to realize there are a lot of people who should not be parents. I think that a good point was made earlier, in that people are upset that their taxes will pay for a $500 abortion, but not that their taxes will cover the cost of childbirth as well as 70-odd years of this new person's medical treatment. That being said, I think the abortion clause should be taken out of this healthcare bill. Seriously. Not because I don't think it should be a part of the plan but because it's such a hot topic issue that it's going to distract from any other debatable issues on this bill. Scrap it. Make a good, solid, healthcare bill. Put a clause about procedures deemed medically necessary by a physician to cover the if-I-don't-abort-I'll-die issues (which btw 'abortions' like that are usually covered in most insurance plans anyway and they take place in a hospital not an abortion clinic) but seriously, this is stupid bickering about something that can be fixed later.

Informed and Planned Parenting starts when you make the choice to participate in a behavior with the potential to result in pregnancy. Nothing in life is guaranteed, even contraception. ;) Hell, Mary never had sex and still got knocked up.... That being said. I have five Children. My oldest was born 5 days prior to my 30th B-Day. Three of them are mine biologically, I pay child support to insure they are taken care of. I work a job that provides them medical coverage. I do my best to set them up with resources to prepare them for college. I made the decision before I ever stuck my cock in a woman's Vagina, that I would be there to support that child to the best of my ability until the day I die. Did I use contraceptives, yes. Did I have sex with women who used contraceptives, yes. But I was prepared to accept my responsibilities should my precautions be inadequate. This is where we fail the most. Because your actions were done for recreational reasons, are you absolved from your responsibilities to the effects of your behavior?

A NHS bill is something that should have been implemented 10 years ago. Personally I don't feel that entirely elective abortions should be government funded. Nor do I believe elective cosmetic surgery or medicines like Viagra should be. Private insurance is a business, and they can do what they want, but public healthcare is for the public health, not for the public's lifestyle choices. Strangely I do think birth control should be on there, although it is entirely elective, and I realize that's illogical, but so it goes. But anyway, there is a difference between abortion as a choice and abortion as a medically necessary procedure. I do think it is sad that the women who can't afford an abortion are often the ones who need one most, but I don't know if the best solution is to make it part of healthcare. "Being too poor to raise a child" is not a medical condition.

I would rather take the risk that people who are anti-abortion anyway will stay that way, than take the risk that a politically explosive (and not medically necessary) argument like this one will stall a bill that NEEDS to be passed, and that the spectacle of debate will take away from the rest of the bill that will deal with medical emergencies. ETA: one thing I want to make clear - this is a national healthcare bill, not a pro-choice or pro-life bill. If this is the issue that stuffs it up I'd say the politicos on both sides are being selfish prats who put their pet causes ahead of this nation's wellbeing. But, the side that is pushing pro-life is also the side that tends to be anti-NHS to start with. I roll my eyes at the political posturing but at the same time I implore the other side to go public and say fine. No elective abortions. This is about the health of our citizens, not about their right to do what they want with their body. That's a different fight, save it for that one until after this one is won.
