Anerin,

I think the OP could spin into a 2nd thread.   As it is a 2 part question- maybe more.    Please post a follow up thread.   (or anyone else)  (unless I am way off on this one- if so- I am sorry)

I'm sure you have heard of "Sex and the City."

Yes I've heard of it....but can't think of anything worse than watching four lasses drinking wine and talking utter shite about boyfriends etc. Given the choice I'd rather study the patterns on my plates in the washing up bowl for hours and hours.

FYI, Cosmos is their drink of choice and I find the quartet quite entertaining, but then again, I'm a lass ;-) And that is the point of TV, to entertain us. That said, I think there is a lot more wisdom in that show than people give it credit for.

Yeah but thats how they are also in real life...or at least my ex who is a successful businessman, it always made me grin a lot to see him in business and at serious moments and then the kid behind closed doors [:)] Though I don't blame him, you need a release somewhere, at the end of the day [:D]

I've asked her and she said: "non descendant my arse - it's all ours - all of it - even the Frenchies' bit".

So there you have it - everyone's Grandma has spoken - and if she says it's all ours then that's the way it's gonna be.

Best make yourself a 'descendant' - otherwise she'll send the corgis over to deal with you.

rockspider -> RE: American TV ? (3/21/2010 3:20:50 PM)

I do remember an American friend of mine who had a painting on his wall “The New Yorkers view of the world”. It showed a view from a window where you could discern the features of New York to the Hudson River. Beyond that it was “The rest of the world”. I have always felt it was a general American way of thinking. I did see a news clip one day where they had tested college kids and asked them to name 10 countries in Europe and name their capitols. 2 out of 3 were unable to do so. After that I asked my own kid and 2 of her friends to do the same for Asia, South America and Africa. Ok they did have the odd error, but they were 90 % correct.
When it comes to TV shows, the American ones seem to use totally unrealistic social settings. Let’s face it, an ordinary cop don’t drive a 100.000 $ car and live in a 3000 square feet designer home in an expensive suburb. British (and European) TV shows tend to show more a realistic view of the social circumstances of how people live. I do know that there has been from both sides shows which do break that mould, but I am talking in general.

There's a difference then as television programmes here operate under the general principle that television should entertain and inform. British television is rooted in some form of reality - otherwise we wouldn't watch it - most of our programmes are gritty and understated - a reflection of the nation. I get the impression that US TV likes to show upwardly mobile/affluent/good looking/happy people - and in that sense it is basd in reality as it's part of the American dream. Our TV shows like to tell it how it is - and we have no English 'dream' - in fact we have no English 'try your best and hope for the best'....just an English 'more disappointment'.

Well, it depends on what you are watching really. I mean if you are watching a news program or something that is non fiction, then yes you could learn something about American culture, to a point.

However, while that may be the American Dream, it isn't reality. It is the "Hollywood view" of reality which is definately a little skewed. But it's all good. I enjoy television. I enjoy reality shows that aren't really reality, more like "unscripted television." I admit that I enjoy shows like Survivor so I can watch people scheme and stab each other in the back. I watch American Idol so I can see someone get the opportunity of a lifetime. And I watch Desperate Housewives because it's damn funny. I also love all the legal shows because it is my background. But as I said, those shows don't show how a case really comes together, only the good parts.

While the amount of eating out and partying they do is a bit over the top, because no one could afford to eat in fancy restaurants like that in NYC that much or manage to party every night and go to work the next day, the stuff they talk about is pretty close in reality to how a lot of women friends will relate to each other.

Women tend to really talk to each other about things that men don't, and yes, in graphic detail. One of the most refreshing things I found about the show was how the women managed to always be supportive of each other even when they disapproved of their friends' actions.

I agree it had more wisdom than people give it credit for and some men would be wise to watch it and get a better insight into the female mind.

pahunkboy -> RE: American TV ? (3/22/2010 7:20:01 AM)

the shit you pay for- in this care- TV- the content- it is ONLY there BECAUSE the culture PAYS FOR IT,  reflects the mood of the culture.

cash money makes TV go around.   if the content had no importance to the culture - no one would watch, no one would buy the products, no one would pay cable hook up, or burn their electric bill- over stuff that was no reflective of "us".

TV in Iran, North Korea, China, will look unlike America.   There again it is what the culture WANTS TO SEE.

Until people cancel TV in large numbers- the idea sticks.
