THE BOX -- What would you do?


Oh god i could never hurt someone even one i don't know

Status: offline 		QUESTION: Would you press the red button if it would gain you a million dollars, but it has a catch of someone somewhere in the world that you don't know will die?

I just rented THE BOX. Its is a movie which i saw a preview for on TV, which basically states a couple gets a chance at a million dollars if they push a button. The catch is someone somewhere in the world they don't know will die if they do.

NOW I HAVEN'T WATCHED THE MOVIE - I WILL BE TODAY SO PLEASE DO NOT TELL WHAT THE MOVIE IS OR THE ENDING ETC.

I am just going on the preview and the ideas, based on all of the compassion and people just don't care idea especially about Americans, I hope people would answer this as honestly as they could. PErsonally i don't believe caring about people you don't know is so cut and dried as some people make it.

PLEASE ANSWER AS HONESTLY AS YOU CAN, the poll is anonymous so no one will know what choice you gave.

I wanted to participate but none of these answers fit my honest response.... The truth is while the first answer is clearer to the truth it's pretty far from the honest truth... The part that get's me into trouble is the " i could never hurt someone "  because there are certain people I believe I could be capable of hurting.....The truth is I'm a firm believer that most of us, put in the rigt set of circumstances are capable of the most horrendous things....

However, for me the truth to answer your specific question is I don't think any money on earth would be worth hurting a 'random' person.........Now, a specific person..... A specific person who I believe has committed evil offenses on earth...... Yes, I do think I could I could and would do that in a heart beat.

Status: offline 		My vote went to the first option. I don't believe I'd be able to take a million dollars if it meant another had to die.

Never heard about the movie but sound like one I'd love to watch!

I would put a bullet in someone for certain other reasons though.

However. . . if we are talking about the situation in this movie . . . if someone I do not know shows up at my door or such a box showed up in my mailbox, I would either tell the person to get off my porch or throw the box away or call the bomb squad.  I am just not comfortable with complete strangers making such far-fetched offers. 

Humans would do anything to see if it was possible to do it. If you put a large switch in some cave somewhere, with a sign on it saying 'End-of-the-World Switch. PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH', the paint wouldn't even have time to dry. ~ Thief of Time

Status: offline 		I wouldn't push the button because money just isn't worth it to me to do something that I consider evil.  I can hurt someone in the moment, like if they're threatening me or someone I love, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing that I was responsible for some random stranger's death just for money.

Ya know, most states would disagree with you.  I think that it is only a $5000 dollar fine to hit a road worker in Kansas, but in Missouri it is a $10,000 fine and you loose your license for a year and that has been the highest I have seen.

Holly, I know that your emotions are a bit raw right now.  If you want to re-visit this idea at another time, let me know and I will explain my reasoning.  It is less about padding my bank account and more about being truthful about choices I have made in my life.

Status: offline 		And the ending to the story was pretty lame. I'm not bothering to see the movie, I'm sure it will be just as lame.

It is true that human life is valued cheaply. It doesn't mean that I need to set my values solely on the economics.

My daughter has outgrown her interest in her horse who does mainly pleasure and horsemanship classes. We want to get rid of him. There are trainers around who would pay a significant amount of money for him but they would not treat him well. I would be no better than they are if I could do this. And I hold no respect for them. Instead we're letting the barn he is now in use him as a lesson horse in exchange for me not paying his board in the hopes that a kid who can bond with him will want to buy him for a lesser amount.

And although Aylee says she can do this, I doubt she would if it came up for real. Any more than she would sell the family dog to be used for medical experiments.

Status: offline 		Okay folks lets not get this too deep or comment on a personal level -- it was just an interesting question and one that has been asked for many many years when you think of movies and books that have appeared. The point is people would push the button but the WHY doesn't necessarily always seem to be for the money although its a benefit. And it is easy to me for people to say ohh i wouldn't push it while not having it in front of you and going through all the questions in your head.

Now i have a question -- People are saying that their decision to push the button is based upon the million dollars, but i am curious, why you would believe you are the reason for the person's death? Isn't the person who literally causes the death the one at fault?

This movie is interesting because its all about choices that people are implying lead to the death of people. But in the end who really caused the death? Who is really at fault? Someone who disbelieved something was true and pushed a button or the person who caused the person's actual death?

Now i don't want to give away the movie as some people haven't seen it so this is all my question is. If you think about the movie its an interesting human nature concept even if it was eh.

I am a person who doesn't do the guilt of people who didn't cause a person's death but wants to blame themselves. Maybe others have more faith in people but to me, i think the answer of most is maybe for whatever reason, this type of temptation is wraped up more than in money and death.

Status: offline 		Hi Level, I liked the reality of human nature in the movie. I liked the inquiry it stated in my mind all the little ins and outs. I didn't LIKE lol the ending but in the beginning i figured it was something to that extent.

I also think the reason for pushing the button was the clincher and the actual reasons behind the deaths of the persons dying.

Unfortunately it can't be discussed in depth without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it.

I would say if this type of question interests you, its a good movie to see though its not the best movie out there to see in my opinion.

Its another indecent proposal movie only on a high scale of consequneces. Questions like this to me are never the absolute yes or absolute no answers, but its an easy question to answer if not confronted with the actuality of making same.
