TheHeretic -> Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 8:03:57 PM)

I drink alcohol.  I do this more days than not, by a good margin.  Once upon a time, I used to do this in excessive ways (chronic binge drinking would be the accurate decription) but that was a long time ago.  Then I didn't drink alcohol at all for a number of years.  Now it is simply routine for me to have a cold cider in the evening.  Maybe two if it is hot, and I'm thirsty.  I might get myself a little buzz every other weekend or so, but as soon as the buzz kicks in, I switch to fruit juice, and don't take it any further.

A while back, it annoyed my wife that we had been together better than two years, and she had never seen me get drunk, despite the fact that I "drank" every night.  I corrected that for her at the next opportunity, but since I passed out and started snoring loudly just when she thought she was going to get some, her enthusiasm for me drinking to excess has waned.

Tonight seems to be the night though.  I had three margaritas over a nice dinner out, and have popped the top on a couple since then.  When I run out of cider, there is a bottle of very good tequila a friend was dumb enough to leave here.  It's been maybe 18 months since I last got drunk, but tonight...  It might be time.

How often do you get drunk?  Do you think of it as being a good, healthy activity, or is automatically a bad thing?

I love an occasional wine cooler or mead.  With my meds, I do have to watch what I drink.

intenze -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 8:34:44 PM)

never, it is irresponsible, silly, and unnecessary.

intenze -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 8:36:05 PM)

ok I lied like a rug.

Aylee -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 8:37:38 PM)

I just want to see the insane posts.  Drunk people always have insane posts.  [:)]

thornhappy -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 8:41:26 PM)

A few times a year I'll get a bit toasted.  I've never been hungover or disgraced myself, but there's always the chance of triggering a migraine, which is why I drink so seldom.

TheHeretic -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 8:44:50 PM)

Ok, Aylee.  I decided my back was giving me enough twinges to rate a couple of (properly prescribed) mellow yellows.  Insanity should be along shortly.

It's comforting to know that Mod XI has gone into retirement.  If I head back into Politics in this frame of mind, I'd get one of her little notes for sure!

AND I live in a state which properly recognizes the importance of medical marijuana!

C'mon folks!  Answer the stupid questionn!  Is it a bad thing to just decide to get completely fucked up once in while?

DarkSteven -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/20/2010 9:47:38 PM)

I got drunk a couple of times when I was in my twenties.  Since then I realized that I can be stupid enough when sober, and that I never really liked the taste of alcohol.

For years I drank only the wine at Jewish services.  A year ago I quit drinking even that.

Are you doing it in a safe manner?  A place where you are able to sober up without going anywhere?  Do you have anyone else relying on just you to take care of them (like a toddler)?  Are you able to stop yourself in your drinking before an alcohal induced coma happens?  Will you be able to continue with your productive life after this event (go to work the next day or whatever)?

If you answered:  yes, yes, no, yes, yes

Then I see no problem with it.

Fitznicely -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 1:59:25 AM)

I've got wasted a few times, enough to know I'm a happy drunk rather than the nasty drunk I thought I'd be, but to be honest, I don't really like the taste of many alcoholic drinks, so that tends to make me not want to drink too much of it.

Mead, I could do some serious liver damage with though. Mmmmmmmmm

Ange1ica -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 2:03:10 AM)

I enjoy drinking, but I don't get drunk.  Too much of a control freak!

Nope.  Well, not unless you're asking your liver :)

I'll do it once in a while out on the town with friends ... usually it's the 'Let's just have a couple of quiet ones' nights which turn bad maybe once every 6 months or so.

Level -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 4:05:47 AM)

Rich, I drink a whisky and diet Coke probably 5 nights a week, relaxes me a bit, gives me a little buzz, but I don't get shitfaced. Now, when younger, I would drink to excess, but even then, I didn't go hog wild like some folks. Except once... we went to Galveston on summer break during high school, and drank Jack Daniels straight all day. I remember standing up in the back of the truck and peeing over the side... well, being graceful, I swan dived right over the side, into where I had just pissed.

rockspider -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 4:27:43 AM)

In my younger days i used to party a lot and in my circles that meant a vast selection of alcohol. The result was that getting drunk was more the rule than not. Now i do enjoy my alcohol but rarely get drunk. However i am a sucker for good redwine, speciality beers and the ocasional good scotch, but a bottle of Glenfiddich single malt normaly lasts 6 months or more in my house and i have enjoyed every single drop. I also have quite a selection of booze in my home but that mostly is something i have gathered on my trips in foreign countries. Most of it has stood on the shelves for years and could be called decorations in stead of actual for consumption. They do make great conversation pieces.[:D]

Justme696 -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 4:34:37 AM)

mmm I got drunk many years ago..for the last time.
I started drinking late..because I studied a lott ( yes for many people studying equals partying..lol).
Drank once in a while way to much..but then I had to play football on sunday mornings. So I stopped even drinking on saterdays when going out.

I do like a glass of wine with a nice dinner now....or a cold beer in the summer. But mostly I grab a cup of coffee.
Or a hot choc with a dash of rum ;) in the winter.

Alcohol is not needed so much for me. I prefer to taste what I drink...it is not about getting drunk.

Not for a good 10 years or so - though I like a beer like the next man.

I don't necessarily think it's unhealthy to have a few too many now and again - can help blow off a bit of steam.

I come from a background where beer is interwoven with enjoyment and between 16-25 was drunk every weekend - well apart from 18-21 where I was off my face on some drug/s or other in some dance club every weekend - all part of growing up for me.

As you get older you have responsibilities so losing weekends isn't much of an option.

Tell you what though Rich - I had a right old time in those years - it's a long life and plenty of time to be 'sensible'.

Termyn8or -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 5:05:12 AM)

Heretic, everyone has their own standards. What is drunk ? As a record holding DUIist in this state I think my perspective might be of value. I drink some beer just about every day, but at 200 lbs. I don't get drunk. I do get let's say tipsy a couple times a month, but I am not dangerous.

The way to not be dangerous is to only go so far. I don't drive drunk, but to achieve that I must not get so drunk that I remember that I better not do that. In other words, at a certain level any adult can be dangerous. To be able to get actually drunk and still remember to leave things alone, like the guns and the carkeys etc., power tools and so forth, that is a mark of maturity. And I will admit it took me a long time to get there, too long in fact. In short drinking has crippled my life, but I will be fine.

It's the same way with any drug, and I will call it a drug, in the same context with cigarettes and weed, or even hard drugs. A friend of mine put it best "It's all an escape". When one needs that escape it will come in whatever form, if it be alcohol fine. Just don't run over my kids, or shoot people ar anything like that. If you become abusive when under the influence of anything, deal with the root problem somehow, so you can really enjoy it.

My Ma said it, do what you want, you're free, white and over twenty one. But remember your problems are still there in the morning. In other words, drinking or inbibing in anything intoxicating is a temporary escape. If you take for what it is then fine. But if you NEED to escape that way the underlying issues must be resolved. If you have problems in the noggin that are bugging you, you might go off, you might do something stupid. You might hurt people.

Let's take a much stronger drug for comparison, and I've done it. Pharmaceutical(sp) PCP. Meant for million dollar racehorses if you get it right, in it's pure form it is one of the most powerful drugs on the planet. I think it has something to do with the fact that horses don't sleep like we do and a regular anasthetic doesn't work quite right should they require an operation or something. This stuff is highly illegal except for vets, and the only way to get it is to steal it. It is not cheap, but it goes a long way.

In comparison to alcohol, once buzzed on PCP you can literally cut your own arm off with a chainsaw and not give it a second thought. There is no pain barrier, and as you might know you are several times stronger than you think you are. This drug has led to the invention of super handcuffs, as prisoners on it would outinely break the chain and continue their mayhem. LEOs have shot people multiple times in the chest and they still keep coming and kicking ass until their blood is literally drained. So now we have hinge cuffs. I don't recommend anyone try this shit, because you find out if you have any issues the hard way. People are locked up for life because of shit they pulled when high on PCP, real PCP, not the shit Bubba cooks in the basement down the street.

The issues come from within, that is that some people can and some people can't. There is no easy way to find out. Some people have never drank alcohol at all, so we don't really know what they would do. It can range from annoying the neighbors with loud music to going postal somewhere. I have only gone postal once, a very long time ago and I almost can't believe everyone came out of it alright. That was a wake up call to say the least. The loud stereo, well I do that totally sober as well because I didn't spend all that money on speakers for nothing.

I think the major point is just why you want to get drunk, or tipsy for a more polite term. If you just want to have a good time you probably will, but if you are trying to drink your problems away, I can tell you from personal experience that it just doesn't work.

This is unfortunately one of those things about which I AM the citable, quotable reference. My past is repleat with mistakes, many of them bad ones. When I was young I had issues, and was a hellion at least, but I don't know a superlative word right now. Now that I have resolved most of my internal issues I can look forward to tipping a few twelve ouncers with my dudes and so forth.

On a given Friday night, you can tell when I shouldn't drive anymore. Someone will start talking about fishing, and I will exclaim "Motherfuckers, you are always talking about fishing but I have never seen one of you bring a fish in this house, EVER". Which is true. I don't like fishing and it has sort of become a reference point i.e. if they start talking video games or TV, shit like that - "Now you've done it, finally found something more fucking useless to talk about than fishing". Seriously though, they go all the time and talk about it and everything but I have yet to see one fish. I sometimes ask them then what is the point ? I guess I can understand it to some degree, but it still makes no sense to me. Just throw out a net and pick the fuckers out of that. Fry em up and be done with it, but NOOO, we go for the outdoors. Well then GTFO ! LOL

Whether or not you have a problem has nothing to do with what you drink or how much, what matters is WHY.

T

DesFIP -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 6:15:47 AM)

I can tolerate one or two drinks with a meal. Beyond that I don't get drunk, I get sick.

And I have zero tolerance for people who drink to get drunk and who can't control their drinking. Alcoholism runs throughout my family tree. We watch out for it in ourselves and the younger generation has been educated about it because of the danger it poses to us.

Musicmystery -> RE: Drinking to excess (3/21/2010 7:00:10 AM)

I don't drink at all anymore.

One of the best decisions I ever made.
