As one who frequently voted for Conservatives/Republicans in the late 70's, I can tell you that this Modern Republicanism is a COMPLETE change from the honorable conservatism of those and earlier years. Modern Republicanism, an outflow of the "Republican Revolution", is a perverse ideology that uses hate, rage, anger, and fear to consolidate followers.

This story simply validates my view.

Conservative Blogger Urges Obama Assassination on Twitter - DailyFinance

As Congress neared a vote on the controversial health insurance reform bill, a self-described conservative blogger used his public Twitter account to urge the assassination of President Barack Obama, and then recanted. The Secret Service is investigating.

I used to have some pride telling people I was a conservative.  Now I would crawl under a rock and probably have a fear of shoes.

From your link:

Forell's threats were made Sunday morning -- and prompted an outcry. His response?

"Attention Whining Liberals: No one wants to hurt the precious #EMPEROR. Stop your crying. The whole lot of you are a modern day joke. #tcot"

Does this sound like anyone we know?

I wonder how he'd have reacted if some whining liberal had been suggesting shooting the chimp back in '04?

Ya know, how about we stop with the chimp talk as well. Bush may not be exactly what some of us wanted in a president, but he was president.

There's a certain irony in you saying that with what a large chunk of the board are calling the Kenyan, isn't there?

Yeah but just imagine the furor if they called him "the chimp."

Don't expect class from Moon, Tazzy.  He also thinks it's funny and clever to call President Obama a n*****.

Well let me go on record as agreeing with tazzy...and decrying the use of "the Kenyan",whether or not it is meant as derogatory it is 1) just so much bullshit and 2) he actually has a title.....President of the United States of America.

Respect is earned, kids. When was the last time you had a President who made any attempt to do that?

The Office itself is imbued with respect...much as any other similiar position would be.Your inability to see that is troubling to say the least.

I completely agree, and to be honest I really do lose respect for people on both sides who use "the chimp" or "the Kenyan" or "the commie" or anything else.

It's Bush and Obama. Former President Bush and President Obama if you want to be formal. I can understand nicknames in a specific case of snarking, but even then I'd be more inclined to use "Georgie" and "Barry" instead of labels like "chimp" and "Kenyan."

I find this assumption that even an incompetent lying piece of shit is deserving of respect, purely because he won an election pretty troubling myself. (The fact that it only seems to apply if said politician is from the party you favour yourself is arguably more funny than troubling, but that's just human nature.) I'm at least showing some consistency here, unlike those who are getting arsey when anything nasty's said about Obama or forgot all about this "l'etat c'est moi?" crap they were spouting about Bush the second a black Democrat got elected. The sudden role reversal at the end of '08 was breathtaking. Maybe it's a UK thing: you'd probably get sectioned under the mental health act if you were caught showing any respect for a politician of any stripe over here.
As for the Kenyan/n****r thing, do they not have sarcasm on your side of the Atlantic? I always thought Mark Twain and Matt Groening were masters of that. If the Republicans and teabaggers on the forum don't have the backbone to say what they're thinking and what's at the root of their whining about Obama, they should shut up. I don't remember hearing even half of the crap that's been thrown at Obama said about Clinton or Carter, put it that way.
Still, as there seems to be people on here stupid enough to take that seriously, I'd better leave it out in future.

As for similar positions being imbued with respect, does that include the positions held by (say) Saddam Hussein or Mohammed Mossadeq? It's a bit of a cheek somebody in a country that's happy to dispose other nation's leaders at the drop of a hat complaining about the respect due to political leaders, is it not?

I favor neither party, though I favor respecting the office of President regardless of party.

Not sure what blackness has to do with it but I agree with the spirit of the comment - Tea parties are no different than anti-Iraq war protests and the minority party in both cases is really playing up the "you're ignoring the wishes of the people" aspect.

I wasn't alive for Carter but my mother's told me that he was absolutely trashed by public opinion when he dared to suggest reducing heating bills by wearing a sweater inside during winter.

Clinton on the other hand was very moderate, I've heard him described as "one of the best moderate Republicans in recent history" tongue-in-cheek, which makes it unfair to compare him to a strong leftist like Obama.

Ah, realist vs liberal politics at its finest - note I'm not using those terms as descriptors but rather referring to the schools of thought in international politics that basically address the question of nationalism vs. globalism.

My answer is, I owe loyalty only to my country and its allies. Which might make things tricky as my citizenship and residency are different, and in a few years I'll hold dual citizenship, but fortunately Australia and the US seem to be getting along well enough that I don't think I'll have to choose one or the other anytime soon.

Well we lead the world in "cheek" don't we?
And as far as your partisan point,I can only speak for myself....I never referred to Bush as the "chimp"....certainly I questioned his intelligence...but I feel intelligent enough to have done so without the necessity of acting infantile about it.
Sarcasm I get, actually I'm pretty good at it..and certainly good enough to know I can accomplish it without the use of some assinine nick

So hang, the CIA deposing Mossadeq was a pragmatic act that had good results in the long run? Most people hold that him selling oil to the Soviets wouldn't have been half as bad as the mess that twenty years of the Shah running Iran kicked off in '79.

That was aimed more at TheHeretic: I find it pretty funny that he took that one seriously.

No worries Moon...what I had said concerning respect was not solely aimed at you either...just a statement of my own general view of things.....it's not like I am all militant about it or anything, though I am likely to assign a sliding scale of respect based on the respect shown in a given post......I myself at times slide right off the scale....and not in a good way
