okay i mean bicycles lol not motorcycles.

I am thinking about getting a bike this spring not for mountain biking or such but to help me get in shape. Meaning i want to ride it around the neighborhood maybe on some bike paths and hopefully to the Y to actually work out lol.

Last bike i owned was in college and it was a 10 speed. I am now 39.

So do youhave ny recommendations as to what type of bike i should look into? I have no clue where to even start without getting overwhelming info from bike places. I will do research, i just need some direction as to what i should be considering.

Thanks, angel

I have a specialized 20 speed road bike. I use it to commute, five miles a day-more on days off. Summer is nice, less ice and rain-I'll be doing more to run off some winter blubber.

I have a friend on here that rides in a LOT of bike races! I just emailed him to come over here. I'm sure he'll have excellent advice for you! He's been in 100 mile races and finished them!

Cycling is one of my passions. The number one question I would ask you is are your bike paths and streets smooth in your area or bumpy. Here in Montreal, because of winter (and neglect from the city) we are pot hole central.

Road bikes are lovely as they are sleek and lightweight and you can get nice speed. But they suck the moment you are in gravel, sand or a rough patch. Since you aren't going cycling in the bush, you won't need a full-on mountain bike.

Gary Fisher (my favourite bike maker) came out with a nice line of city bikes. He has a great bike finder tool as well: http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike-finder

He also makes fabulous little videos about them. http://www.fisherbikes.com/bike/series/commuter

Mountain bikes are cheaper in a lot of places-but the big tires are harder to push-they are heavy pigs. They do have the advantage of being able to use on rough trails. My specialized is a mountain bike version they call a "comfort bike". But it's not light weight-since it's an off road variant-I just got slick tires for it-less drag. Wieghs about fifteen pounds.

I have a Fuji Absolute 2.0 and like Jeff's it is a hybrid with mountain bike style handlebars. The straight across handlebars are more comfy in my book. I started riding seriously last year with my Dom, we did 6 sponsered rides over the summer ranging from 25 - 40 miles. I really like it, I think it's great you are thinking of getting a bike.

I only had the Fuji for the last ride, prior to that I used a spare mountain bike that my sweetie had. I miss one thing about that mountain bike that the Fuji doesn't have....shocks. I miss the shocks that the mountain bike had on the front tire. When I ride the Fuji it's an easier pedal but my ass and arms take more of a pounding. I'll be getting some damn shocks on this bike before our first ride in April.

Most bike places will let you take the bikes out for a spin in the parking lot. Try a couple different styles to get a feel for what you want. My son invested in a Trek mountain bike and rides it everywhere...he loves it.

*Edited to add  price....I paid 1/2 price for an 800$ bike in a sale the shop was having.

The brand is "specialized"..this one.

http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?arc=2004&sid=04Hardrock

The front and seat have shocks-it's a disc brake model.

Yay Bikes! I am an avid bike rider and have used my bike as my car for a billion years. I would make sure you get one that makes you feel really safe. Mine has wide tires. They dont get trapped in the streetcar rails and if that has ever happened to anyone you know how crazy dangerous and frightening that is.

I dont know how much money you have but the newer Cruiser types, Beach Cruisers, City Cruisers are now made of aluminum and weigh almost nothing which is good if you are needing hoist your bike up and down stairs. Be aware though of horrid bike thieves who could alleviate you of your precious bike in no time. I dont leave mine out overnight and when I bring it somewhere where I will be for many hours, like work, I put it where I can see it out of a window so I can keep my eye on it. Around these parts a new no-speed cruiser, pedal backwards to brake are about 300$ I have one of those u-shaped krypto locks and so far my bike has been safe.

Mine is a no-speed but they can be more dangerous because at times you dont have the amount of control you would have otherwise, when going down hills for example. I had a single front brake put on mine last year but that was after 15 years of riding my girl and the pedal backwards brake was wearing out so that was the least expensive option. I really am glad to have that additional brake now. I think that was about 45$, well worth it.

If you live in a hilly area you may want to get a bike with gears because otherwise it is brute strength getting you up hills. Or getting off and walking beside your bike. I dont have gears which was a problem when I lived 7 miles up the mountain in New Mexivo, I borrowed my friends 12 speed to make the climb. I would suggest investing in the ergonomic bike seat. New bikes might already be equipped with that sort of seat. They have ones for women and ones for men. They are designed to not pinch the nerve in the perineum. If you plan to do any amount of time on your bike it makes a huge difference to have that sort of seat, you can sit comfortably. Mine was about 40$ and I totally love it.

Being 39 aint a thing. Maybe you are out of shape and want to go slow, not ride too far too fast. You can get a really great work out from walking so any exercise you can get will build your strength.

I am 51 and last week my 20 year old friend came on a walk with me, about 8 miles altogether and she told me today she is still sore and I have done the walk again and another shorter one so dont let age keep you back.

You may want to wear a helmet and learn how to put it on properly. I would suggest not buying your helmet at Walmart and going to a bike store instead and have them fit it for you and show you the proper way to wear it. My helmet was about 40$ which I think you can find them for about 30$ at Walmart but the differences are vast and worth every penny.

I had a bad accident last year and that is when I got a helmet. Granted I still rarely wear it but I ought to. If I am going ot be out at night I am more incline to get it.

Buy a bell, you will need it to let people know you are there. I got mine at the dollar store.

Lights, you need lights. I am not sure about where you are but here they are required or you could get a ticket. People steal lights too so make sure you buy one that pops off or is very secure. I have had a light stolen off my bike and that sucks.

I have a rack on the back of my bike, and a basket on that so I can be hands free with nothing encumbering me as I ride. My bike is a Schwinn Beach Cruiser made in Hungary and bought in MPLS in 92 and my bike is still great, working well. I paid less than 200 new and it is a beautiful bike.

Be really careful of driving in traffic and people opening doors it is so frightening and dangerous. Be on your proverbial toes all the time because it is just you and your flesh. If you get too scared ride on the sidewalk even though that is illegal, I would explain to the cop the traffic was nuts and not worth getting killed.

The good thing about getting a city bike is that there is so very little that could go wrong with them. Nice for city riding. My bike has come with me to Australia, New York and MPLS and it has been a great bike to have. No gears and pedal back brake is plenty enough for me. It is nice to have a few gears but if you vibe the city style bikes I am here to say they are awesome! I cant tell you how much I love my bike. And riding it.

Mine is something like this. I admit I took off all the stickers and the paint on mine is only black but I do have white wall tires! The original paint was sparkle black, which I went mental for, but after all these years I have covered up the bumps and nicks and to prevent rust with plain black enamel, I havent been able to find black sparkle paint anywhere. I even tried to lay a tind coat of sparkle nail polish over th eblack paint but that ended up looking lumpy and nasty so I took it off and went with the plain black paint.

I have an 18 speed mountain bike.

I like that I can zip thru town and down the river trails. I do actually use it.

....in my case- I bought it at a garage sale for $25.  They were moving.  Yet- it was a nice bike- in great shape.

Frankly- I would not spend the money if you are not going to use it.

But I do use mine every summer. I even do errands at times.  I get the impression a mountain bike is more versitle.

I love mine.  I used it a few times already this month.

When i used to take part in the rides in South Africa i had a midrange racing bike and used to train an average of 20 - 30 km a day and the rides was normally about 100 km +. One problem with those is that they do require a reosonable surface to ride on and having something which really lasts is never below 4 k $. Now i just do it for the exercise and have a mountainbike and because of their sturdie build they can be made quite a lot cheaper. The one i have now cost about 1200 $. I also switched training grounds as i now virtaully never go on tar but stay on the dirt and mostly in the forest. Wonderfull place to get out in and you don't have to contend with traffic at all. It is also fine on tar, just a bit slower, but if it only the exercise you are looking for, then that doesn't matter. I certainly love mine.

I have injuries- and I think the mountain bike works well for me.   I can hit pot holes and ruts and the bike is fine.

Thanks all for the input, this is all very overwhelming lol. So i will do some research on what you all have said.

For the records, i would only be riding it on city streets that are pretty smooth. I am slightly worried that i would have to ride on busy streets to get to the Y or any place of significance. I know i couldn't ride to work, its 22 miles and mostly highway or really busy streets.

Thanks i look forward to any other information.

there is no bike cooler than a beach cruiser, esp for around town. i'm selling the ol' mountain bike soon & getting one of these babies.

brand new, you will be throwing down some bones...better idea, if ya wanna make a dollar hollar is go to your local thrift stores, chances of finding one for $50 and under are pretty good.

here is the style i'm talking about....what's not to love?

Welllll the color is a bit peptobysmal. And I dont like that it is a girl's bike, I like the bar across the top.

As I stated in my novel up there, cruisers really rock.

If you buy an old one ideally you could have someone check the brake for one thing, the pedal back ones do wear out as mine did, it still works but it is not healthy enough to be trusted to stop me in a pinch or on a wet street etc. The pedals can go too.

I think spending the bucks to get a new one is so very romantic and fantastic. Yet then again some people buy nice bikes and then dont get into them, like sewing machines, so there really is nothing wrong with it and you are breathing good life into a machine made to have a vibrant life.

Oh and on second look, I would really take off the Cadillac decal for sure, that is so lame.
