It stood for Nero, IIRC.  The 6 horns were the 6 hills of Rome.

You can make it stand for practically anyone.  Like folks that said it stood for Ronald Wilson Reagan (6 letters each name.)

Posts, but the only number we should be discussing here is the number of the beast.  Six hundred, threescore and six.  How does it relate???

Nero is a nice theory for people who prefer to believe that the all the really bad shit in the prophecy can be disregarded, right along with the images of a civilization much more technologically advanced than the author could comprehend.  Plenty of people, the respondents to the poll for example, are going to be paying more attention to the bits the Nero theory leaves out.  Those would include the "flaming mountain" hit, the army of 200 million, 1/3 of the population killed, the cashless economy, and instant global communications, but hardly limited to those.

Agreed.  Line those numbers up right on anybody and, "poof!" we have the antichrist unmasked.  I'm just not running with DG's idea about Illinois' tax on people who are bad at math being enough to stop with (though I'm sure it was read as a sign by some!  LOL!).

thornhappy -> RE: New Poll! Is Obama the Antichrist! (3/24/2010 7:03:49 PM)

Apocalyptic writings, written in apocalyptic times.

My problem with the whole thing is taking this as literal truth and coming up with some magic date for the Tribulation.  Christ was supposed to return in his disciples lifetimes, then a bit after that but soon, then around 300 AD, 1000 AD (that whole millennial thing going on) then 1981 (I was in the fundamentalist community at the time, this was compliments of Hal Lindsey), then 2000.  Darby came up with his philosophy of dispensationalism and it's rife with fudge factors.

IMHO, folks might be better off with "No man shall know the day or hour."

TheHeretic -> RE: New Poll! Is Obama the Antichrist! (3/24/2010 7:33:14 PM)

Oh, yes.  The Late, Great Planet Earth.  That was a must read of the day, wasn't it?  I understand the Left Behind books have done pretty well, too.  My mother-in-law has them, but I'm not tempted.

it's a known fact that each president is made from 23% anti-christ. The anti-christ is just too big to fill the shoes of just one presidency, no no,the ant-christ needs to spread the anti-christness around around. The House of Reps and Senators all contain at least 2% of the anti-christ.. What remains goes to Rush, O'Reiley and Coutler. Spreading himself around to both sides of the political party yet slightly favoring the Republicans ensures a creamy filling of anti-christ in every aspect of government.[;)]

I'm sorry, this is just priceless!

I hear Hal's back too - he's got a web site now http://www.hallindsey.com/

The Left Behind books have sold like hotcakes!

I read part of them (on a blog) and some of the attitudes in there make my hair stand on end, the bad way. And it was just really poor writing.

Well, that's not really true, I'm from TX, but it was definitely very bad.

"Nero is a nice theory"...as in Evolution is a nice theory if one wishes to believe that opposing thumbs have some purpose other than grasping one's own dick? Do you mean that kind of nice theory or were you just being facetious. I wasn't sure.

It is a widely regarded fact among historians, theologins and Biblical scholars that the audience for the Book of Revelation was the Christians of the seven churches of Asia Minor persecuted by the Roman Empire. The Beast of Babylon (the city of Rome) is described as having 7 heads representing the 7 "kings" or rulers of Rome. According to Revelation, 5 of the rulers have come and gone, meaning the "prophesy" was probably written during the reign of the 6th ruler Nero (although many scholars believe it was completed during the reign of Domitian).

Chapter 13 of Revelation describes a beast that arises from the sea with 10 horns and many heads. He is the enemy of God who controls the world and kills the saints and his number is 666. This second beast is again recognized as a symbol for Rome with the 10 horns being the various rulers. It is no coincidence that the Book fo Revelation was authored during the reign of the 6th ruler Caesar Nero, the most hated of all the emperors, and that in ancient numerical systems numbers were written by using letters and any combination of letters could yield a numerical total. Caesar Nero in Hebrew is spelled "Neron" which totals 666 in the Hebrew numerical system.

The author of Revelation was not referring to anyone in modern times but was addressing the 7 churches and the "prophesy" that God was going to overthrow this emperor (Nero) and his empire at the end of time.

I don't mean to be a twat and get all "school teachery" about it, but I hate when people misinterpret the Bible. It confuses the Christians.

Get as schoolmarmish as you like, Brainia, it doesn't turn your position into anything but another opinion the holder thinks doesn't stink.  You also seem to have the disregarded the bits of the prophecy I pointed out are disregarded by people following the theory you espouse.

You can be a twat anytime [;)]

Well, since I have your permission, here goes....

Although we are each entitled to our own opinions, we are not entitled to our own facts. I presented some facts that support a "theory" that is far more plausible than yours, given those facts. I didn't disregard any part of a "prophecy" you mentioned, it's just that there is nothing stated in the book of Revelation that cannot be better explained when taken in the context of the theory I presented above. Your interpretation requires a HUGE stretch of imagination to believe that anything written in Revelation has any relevance beyond the audience and events of that time.

Thus endeth the lesson [;)]

Elisabella -> RE: New Poll! Is Obama the Antichrist! (3/25/2010 1:00:18 AM)

That was an awesome post Braniac. It makes me wonder though...the Roman Empire was conquered by Christ (though not in the two armies meet on a field way) and I wonder if that would actually mean it's a true prophecy...I'm not familiar with all the details about how it's supposed to happen, is there anything that would support the Christianization of the Roman Empire being parallel to the book of Revelations?

Brain -> RE: New Poll! Is Obama the Antichrist! (3/25/2010 1:11:20 AM)

To “hound, hassle and wipe out”....That is the party line now, spoken by an uneducated pill popping anal cyst.  He is one of those that should truly be hounded, hassled, and wiped off like the big mouth fool he is.

Nasty Noise: The Far Right Goes Too Far

By Amy Beth Arkawy
NEWS JUNKIE POST
Mar 23, 2010 at 7:06 am

Nothing should shock us at this point. I mean we’ve heard the rabid rancour for months over everything from Obama’s birth certificate to health care reform. Still the names hurled at members of Congress last weekend as the House Bill was finally headed to the floor, was nothing short of shameful. Citizens yelling the “n” word at African American congressmen, spitting at and tossing anti-gay epithets at Barney Frank, Texas Congressman Randy Neugebauer actually shouting “baby killer” at Bart Stupak, who despite holding out for anti-abortion language ( which was, by the way, included), voted for the bill. All deplorable. For the record, Neugebauer apologized, saying he shouted, “it’s a baby killer” denouncing the bill, not Stupak.  Whatever that’s worth. The de facto Grand Pooh bah of the GOP, Rush Limbaugh, kept the crazy fury going on the Monday edition of his radio show vowing to “hound, hassle and wipe out” the Democrats.

What compounds the unforgivable, hateful spewings is the silence of the “loyal” opposition. Why have no Republican leaders emerged to slam such heinous hate speech? House Majority leader John Boehner would actually garner my respect if he had the decency to condemn such talk. A rebuke would in no way detract from his very vocal opposition to the bill, or quite frankly anything that has Obama’s fingerprints on it. There is room for disagreement, even passionate disagreement without using, condoning or endorsing hate.

This is what turns me off the Repubs. Last summer the were content to sit by and watch as the town hall meetings were tea bagged with hateful, often racist and threatening language. Some like Michele Bachmann and Chuck Grassley actually stoked the fire, whipping the borderline irrational into a frenzy with crazy talk about birth certificates and death panels. Even more moderate voices like Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have remained mum. With the exception of John McCain and Lindsey Graham who have selectively denounced –without prompting– hateful gushings by citizens and congressmen, I haven’t heard a GOP leader speak out against the angry rabble. McCain was one of the first to condemn Joe Wilson after he yelled “You lie!” at President Obama during a joint session of Congress.

Yet, yesterday McCain came out forcefully against the legislation, vowing to offer “little cooperation” for the rest of the year. On an Arizona radio show he said, “They have poisoned the well with what they’ve done and how they’ve done it.”

While he isn’t dripping with venomous vitriol, McCain has joined the obstructionist chorus. Of course the GOP has been threatening to take their marbles and go home since Obama took office. And this tact is a long term loser. Okay, maybe they will fetch more seats in November, maybe even–and it’s a long shot– reclaim the House. But after a while the voters will get sick of the tantrum party, sick of watching these guys stomp their feet, shake their fists and wail “NO!!” at the top of their lungs. Now, the GOP mantra is “repeal.” Good luck with that guys. As the elements of the reform bill become better understood and the public let’s it settle in, more people will get on board the reform train. Despite the messy, often mean process and the bill’s limitations, people will realize there are long-term benefits that will improve their families’ lives. Try telling folks we’re re-implementing pre-existing conditions, raising senior prescription costs or kicking your newly minted unemployed college grad off your insurance. At some point, the voters will recognize those who actually look to our better angels, working with greater concern on the people’s business than for their own re-elections.

Let’s face it, I can’t jump for joy over this current health care reform legislation. I agree with Dennis Kucinich, who held his nose as he voted yes for a bill that did not contain many of the elements needed for a full overhaul. But Rome wasn’t built in a day. And every baby step in the right direction counts. And there are some good things in the bill, though even many of those won’t go into effect for another four years. But it is a beginning.

And in time, people will forget just how arduous the journey to take these first few awkward steps has been. But the ugly stain of hatred will not be easily removed from our national psyche.
