Although we are each entitled to our own opinions, we are not entitled to our own facts. I presented some facts that support a "theory" that is far more plausible than yours, given those facts. I didn't disregard any part of a "prophecy" you mentioned, it's just that there is nothing stated in the book of Revelation that cannot be better explained when taken in the context of the theory I presented above. Your interpretation requires a HUGE stretch of imagination to believe that anything written in Revelation has any relevance beyond the audience and events of that time.

Thus endeth the lesson [;)]

Bullshit, Brainia.  Your facts about Rome and Nero are sufficient to form a theory around, and it's a theory that has been embraced by many within some branches of the faith, but it ignores, as you have continued to do, every bit of the prophecy that doesn't fit.  That amounts to most of the book.  I addressed this before you ever chimed in, and you just keep pretending it isn't there.

I understand the desire of many Christians to just make all this dark stuff go away, but don't you fucking DARE try to call it a "fact" and dismiss the opinions of millions of others who don't embrace the new, improved doctrine.

Please though, unless you'll find it easier to just admit you fucking lied about what you ignored, and spouted bullshit you heard in whatever Laodicean church you find your answers in, explain to me how the mark of the beast was applied under Nero, and how none could buy or sell without it?  Who were the vocal critics that the whole world saw die, and what methodology made that possible?  Geology is a hobby of mine, and while I know about the hypothesis of an astronomical impact about 10,000 years ago, into the icepack, I've completely missed anything wiping out 1/3 of the planet's population in the last 1,900.  Got anything on that?

The Horsemen are off the table, so no distractions.  War, disease, famine and disaster are constants.  Go for the biggies. (Though a case would be made from the other side that modern communications make us aware of them in ways undreamed of by previous generations.)

Have you ever even tried reading Revelation for yourself?  Get a King Jimmy translation, read it like poetry.  That's some fun, scary shit in there.  Much better than the Omen.

Rich, I'm not even sure how to address this, so let me just point out a few things:
First, it is considered a fact by most scholars that the Book of Revelation was written to the seven churches of Asia Minor during the reign of Nero and possibly Domitian. Any interpretation of the writing should include the historical context in which it's written. Although it is quite symbolic and difficult to understand sometimes (as were all apocalyses) it does make perfect sense when taken in historical context. Did you read my response to Elisabella? When you understand historically that the book is an apocalypse, modern interpretations seem silly and a bit narcissistic. Do you really think that the entire course of human history has now culminated with us? I will continue to "DARE" to acknowledge facts and the opinions of scholars and dismiss the opinions "of the millions of others" who frankly are not qualified to have opinions in matters of ancient history and theology. I am not dismissive of your faith. You are entitled to believe what you want, but any interpretation of the scriptures that comes soley from reading it as poetry or from the lessens learned in Sunday school is hardly a qualified interpretation.

Second, you accuse me of ignoring - in favor of my Nero theory - any parts of the prophecy that don't fit. No, and I have already addressed this. Revelation is not a book of prophecy but a historical writing of apocalypse. Please reread my response to Elisabella. Also, let me point out that aren't you doing exactly what you accuse me of? Any modern interpretation of the "prophecy" only rings true if you ignore certain features of the text that don't fit. An example would be your mark of the beast statement. Any learned student of ancient Roman history would know that the emperors routinely restricted commerce - the ability to buy, sell and trade freely - among the Jews and Christians as part of a campaign of terror, isolation and oppression. Nero was particularly brutal in this regard, so keeping in mind that Revelation was written during the reign of Nero, doesn't it make more sense to assume that the authors reference to the "mark of the beast" was actually a "prediction" of the inability of the faithful to buy and sell without the approval of Nero as opposed to concocting some elaborate scheme of modern day banking, ATM cards, microchips, or some other farfetched interpretation? I can go on and on debunking all of the so called "prophesies", but I won't. My nerd status will forever be burned in the minds of CMer's if I were to proceed.

Lastly, I have read the Book of Revelation many times. I was raised in a fundamentalist Southern Baptist home so I know the scriptures well. As geology may be a hobby of yours, Theology and ancient history are mine. I have many more books on these topics in my library than I have on sex (of which I'll admit I only have one). Understanding of the Bible cannot come from reading the Bible in a vacuum.

Well if he was the anti christ, don't you think he would be a lobbyist for the insurance industry instead of someone attempting to help those in need?  I mean wasn't  JC into helping people????

How can Obama and Cheny both be the anti christ?

As an aside, the dangerous thing about apocalyptic beliefs is that some folks will then have no interest whatsoever in averting war, disaster, or resource depletion, and may even encourage activities that bring about their prophecies.

[...]

You have it exactly right. This is my primary objection to those who rely on literal interpretations of the Bible. We see this going on in Isreal today. Too many Christians believe the second coming of Christ cannot occur until Isreal reclaims its Holy Lands. This is why we see the religious right nuts calling Obama ( or anyone) antisemitic and the Antichrist when they don't support the continued building of housing on disputed lands.

I am okay with having a geopolitical or national security discussion on the matter, but Biblical prophecy has no place at the table.

Well, contrary to how it might appear, I didn't choose the nic because I believe I'm smarter than everyone else. In fact, there are more than a few people in these forums who could teach me a thing or two. I chose the nic because I wanted to send a message to the type of person I wished to attract.

I could have gone with PhatTwat4U, or HolesGalore, or GetItB4ItsGone, but then I would have ended up with that fucker domiguy.

This is the kind of post that makes me wish these boards had a "reputation" feature.

I don't mean to disappoint you, but I am quite fond of him actually. I have met him in person, and he is not an asshole in real life. He only plays one on the Internet.

We have an agreement - he will teach me to be less nerdy and I will teach him to speak in multi-syllables that don't include the "f" word or the "c" word.

Would that be more anti-American, or less anti-American,  than someone who advocates assassinating the President ?

I am not dismissive of your faith.

Revelation is not a book of prophecy

I was raised in a fundamentalist Southern Baptist home

The first statement is based on a highly erroneous assumption on your part.  It is not my faith.  I'm not a Christian.  I'm far more afraid of the visions from 1984 than I am of anything in Revelation.  I just got an intensive dosing along the way.

It seems I have a bit more respect for the Holy Bible of the Christians though.  I don't believe the book in question was written in cynicism.  Of course it was written to the churches.  It says so, right in the beginning, with some choice points made.  If that renders it irrelevant, does the same apply to the letters of Paul as well?  Not prophecy???  Be it Delphi smoke in the cave, given by God, or just a connection to whatever the hell it is that visionaries get connected to, I believe the vision was written in good faith.  If that isn't religious prophecy, then I'd like you to tell me what is? Are you taking the position it was written like the Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs?  Four guys inhaling cannabis fumes and spouting bullshit as a bedtime story for the flock?   I'm used to hearing about how the bible was just written by power-mad cynics to control the masses, from angry atheists, but I hadn't pegged you for one of those.

I understand now.  Denial is cheaper than therapy. [:D]

Glad to hear you are not a Christian, Rich, but you sure had me fooled.

I never suggested that Revelation or any book of the Bible was written in cynicism. I clearly stated that Revelation was written as a message of hope to persecuted believers of the time. I also did not say that it was irrelevent, only that it was not a modern day prophecy. Even visions written in good faith don't make them prophetic. And yes, that does apply to the letters of Paul. Paul was not a prophet so the purpose and intent of his letters was very different than the writings of the apocalyptic authors, but that is not the topic for this thread. Since I never claimed or in any way suggested that the Bible was written by power-mad cynics to control the masses, then you were right to not have pegged me for an angry atheist.

For future reference, I am not in denial. I have been enlightened through the reading of books other than the Bible. You should try it sometime.

Got an issue, Clouds?  Does the topic frighten you?  If you prefer drive-by posting and threads that spoil faster than milk left in the car on a summer afternoon, I'm sure you can find an eternal stream flowing from the north if you look a bit.

Brainiacsub, so if someone is a muslim, hindu, buddist, jew or any of the hundreds of other religions that are "non-christian" they can just sit on the sidelines and watch all the christians get fucked with by some scary monster out of the sea and then get barbequed and those non-christian religions can just
go along their merry way as spectators?

LaTigresse -> RE: New Poll! Is Obama the Antichrist! (3/27/2010 7:05:16 AM)

I dn't believe in an anti-christ in the context suggested.......but if ever there was a politician that fit my vision of one........it would be Cheney.

Well gee Brainiac, don't you think it's just a little unfair for 1 billion people to be pulling 5 billion people into their little squabble?
