I applied for Santa Fe PD years ago.  Would have been an awesome place to live and work but the salary was barely enough to afford to live anywhere in town.

Interesting video.  The cop should have just gone on about his way.  The person videoing wasn't doing anything wrong.  I question his judgment for being a Ron Paul backer but that isn't illegal.

popeye1250 -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 12:57:18 AM)

I understand that a lot of people open-carry now up in New Hampshire. A whole bunch of Libertarians moved there back in 2003-2006 and it's not "illegal" to open carry but of course some police depts "frown" on it.
So if you're in Portsmouth, Dover or Rochester don't be surprised to see people with iron on their hips going about their business and that includes, "some really nice looking chicks" according to my brother-in-law.

Not sure about NM but I know in IL if a police officer asks you for ID you are required by law to show it to them. That's about the only thing you're required to do other than demonstrate that any obvious bulges aren't concealed weapons, unless you're suspected of a crime or being arrested for one.

Also I didn't watch that whole video but the second cop (the muscular bald one) was actually 100000 times more reasonable than the agitator holding the camera. It's kinda funny when your "activism against cops" makes you look bad and makes the cop look good.

Sanity -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 4:09:49 AM)

They don't have a right to stop you anywhere in the US unless they have a reasonable cause to believe that a crime has been or is about to be committed. And in order to ask for ID they first have to stop you, so no technically they do not.

Do you know why they insist on seeing an id with so much pressure?  There is a reason for that....

Oh yeah, if a police officer asks you for i.d. you have to produce it. They need to know who they're dealing with for their own safety!
They can't just ask people walking down the sidewalk randomly minding their own business of course.

thornhappy -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 4:51:22 PM)

Unless you have an open container.

LadyEllen -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 4:58:10 PM)

More power to those brave enough to open carry I say.

I'm currently looking for any loopholes that might be possible to exploit here to the same ends. The Bill Of Rights 1689 says that as a Protestant (not that I am, but I have been baptised and confirmed in the CofE) I am permitted to be armed, but Acts of Parliament since have sought to diminish and remove that right, banning every form of weapon imaginable.

Wrist rocket.  Good enough for squirrels and chavs too.

Aneirin -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 5:57:13 PM)

In my family, there is a part of it which still has the right to bear arms and raise an army, one of the names from the past, as far as the current family know, this right has not been revoked, so even if it still exists, no one is going to try it, because knowing our system, that will be stamped on straight away, especially so as there are no Lords in the family. I think the entitlement was made to a yeoman farmer.

But though I don't like guns, I would prefer to see them carried on the outside of a person, not concealed, as worn on the outside one can see they are safely and securely holstered and therefore not a threat to anyone who is not a threat to the gun wearer.

LadyEllen -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 5:59:50 PM)

Offensive weapons are banned here TH; offensive weapons includes anything made or adapted for use as a weapon and anything else used or intended to be used as a weapon - this includes common contents of ladies' handbags such as nail files, hairsprays et al in theory at least. Basically, if you use anything to defend yourself youre committing an offence in possessing an offensive weapon - good, innit?

Now, the Pope is coming to the UK. The Bill of Rights 1689 allows me to bear arms against such popish threats but the statute law says I may not. Might make for an interesting test case - any volunteers?

FRAOPIATP

The man didn't say hello to his girlfriend driving the car at the ticket stop how peculiar.

The problem with youtube culture is that everyone wants to make some silly point, so they manufacture the whole situation knowing full well what the outcome will be.

These people need to find something useful to add to the world with their videos other than just the usual provoke a reaction crap.

no thats not the reason.

they insist on your name because your name is your title and once they hae your name they can put a lien on you.

your title is your property and if you give ti to someone well they can take if from you.

Tickets are liens, that is why it is called a charge.  when you give them your name you give them jurisdiction in their foreign corporation municipal courts to take some money from you!

They do not have jurisdiction unless there has been either a reported injury or equity injury.  you are NOT required to give them your name for any other reason.

The last cop that forced me to give him my name no longer works there!  They seen the writing on the wall.

Hmm, I was wrong about the ID thing but you do have to identify yourself (give your name) and you can do that while walking [;)]

why dont you try actually watching it before you flood the place with bullshit?

This is not the UK this is the USA.

We already have large groups of people that network and have vid cams that as soon as someone is stopped they drop everything and drive out with their cameras.

Here again arent you an aussie and crown chattel?  You most likely do but WE do not.

I watched the entire thing from start to finish, sadly (If I didn't then how did I know he used the 'protecting his girlfriend' bs explanation?)

I think this place could be reaching bullshit saturation point due to your posts, not sure there is room for much more.

LadyEllen -> RE: Police Confront Man on Traffic Stop for Open Carry (3/25/2010 6:36:12 PM)

So RO, are you saying that as long as you dont give your ID then youre home free whatever offence you committed?

So for instance, I could steal a car, rob a bank, shoot a security guard and run down a passerby in my escape - but as long as my identity is not revealed I'm going to escape prosecution?

well the great charter was signed because there was a blade at his throat and that was the official beginning of common law as we used to know it in grandpas days.

They full well know what happens when you push people to far and the only thing fries me about your part of the woods is how you allowed yourselves to let them take that away from you and your guns too?

I bet you wish we really did win the revolutionary war and you were had our constitution :)

but dont forget article um... 24 I think about the write of paecipe, but I am not sure of the levels of "freemen" over there now days that would be qualified to use that as a defense.  I am betting not to many of you.
